The Angelus Monthly Publication of the Church of Our Saviour JanuaryMay 2019 RECITAL 4:00 PM • SERVICE 4:30 PM Evensong &Benediction The service of Evensong, one of the jewels of Anglicanism, will be offered at the Church of Our Saviour on Sunday, May 19, with choral music from Stanford, Ayleword, Ireland, and others. Evensong, also known as Evening Prayer, is part of the Daily Office, which is derived from the regular services of monastic communities in the early Church. At the heart of these services was the recitation of the Psalter, the songbook of the Bible, texts that Jesus himself knew and sang. It remains the very core of the Daily Office in our day as well. Evensong will be followed by Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. This service consists of prayers and hymns offered in praise to Our Lord as we venerate the sacred mysteries of his Body and Blood. We believe that Jesus is truly and fully present in the Sacrament that we see upon the altar.
A 30-minute organ recital by Austin Clark, the Church of Our Saviour’s Organist and Choirmaster, will precede the service and feature the works of Vierne, Mendelssohn and Buxtehude. Following the service there will be a wine and cheese reception on the upper courtyard.
