THURIFER AT MISSA CANTATA GENERAL AND HISTORICAL NOTES The Thurifer (Th) has the privilege of bearing the thurible during Mass and of the office of incensing the inferior ministers and the laity. The word thurible is derived from thus, which is Latin for incense. It is generally thought, that the thurible used by the Jews was very similar as employed at Mass now, that is, with three chains, though it is unknown if the Jewish thuribles had a cover. The thurible is also considered to be a liturgical object of great value in its symbolic use, as the thuribles made by the Jews were made of solid gold. This was perhaps done so as to imitate the Altar of Incense (on which incense was burnt three times a day), that stood outside the Temple, which was made of gold plate over wood. The history of the use of incense is very ancient, dating back to earliest ages. Incense was widely used by both the Jews in the Temple ceremonies, as commanded by Almighty God Himself, as well as by the pagan religions. In ancient times, burning incense was also used as an air freshener in countries under Roman or Asian influence; it too was used to incense the guests as a mark of respect at banquets. In fact incense was so widely used, that God Himself commanded the Jews, that the incense compound made for use in the Temple ceremonies, was to be used expressly for the Temple (i.e., God), under the penalty of death, so that it could not be used for secular functions. -

A Comparison of the Two Forms of the Roman Rite Mass Structures Orientation Language The purpose of this presentation is to prepare you for what will very likely be your first Traditional Latin Mass (TLM). This is officially named “The Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite.” We will try to do that by comparing it to what you already know - the Novus Ordo Missae (NOM). This is officially named “The Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite.” In “Mass Structures” we will look at differences in form. While the TLM really has only one structure, the NOM has many options. As we shall see, it has so many in fact, that it is virtually impossible for the person in the pew to determine whether the priest actually performs one of the many variations according to the rubrics (rules) for celebrating the NOM. Then, we will briefly examine the two most obvious differences in the performance of the Mass - the orientation of the priest (and people) and the language used. The orientation of the priest in the TLM is towards the altar. In this position, he is facing the same direction as the people, liturgical “east” and, in a traditional church, they are both looking at the tabernacle and/or crucifix in the center of the altar. The language of the TLM is, of course, Latin. It has been Latin since before the year 400. The NOM was written in Latin but is usually performed in the language of the immediate location - the vernacular. Eucharistic Practice & Sacramental Theology in Pandemic Times
The essential nature of the Eucharist and the modes of its reception DAVID N. BELL & JOHN COURAGE ON BEHALF OF QUEEN’S COLLEGE FACULTY OF THEOLOGY he Faculty of Theology at Queen’s College held two well-attended T consultative sessions by means of GoToMeeting on June 15 and June 22, 2020. The discussions were lively and informative, and alt- hough a great deal of ground was covered, there were three questions of major concern. All three pertain directly to the nature and reception of the Eucharist during the present pandemic. First, how inclusive should the Eucharist be? Or, putting it another way, who constitutes the Body of Christ at the Lord’s Table? Secondly, since the physical reception of the Eucharist – the bread and the wine – is precluded at the present time, in what way or ways can we understand its spiritual reception? And thirdly, can the Eucharist act in a similar way to an icon, namely, as a window connecting this world with the transfigured cosmos? The overwhelming opinion of those present at both sessions was that the Eucharist, which is a multi-faceted celebration, should be as inclusive as possible, and that – once the physical reception is again made possible – no one who presents themselves at the altar should be refused. It is not the business of any member of the clergy to try to channel God’s grace and, as a consequence, anyone who wishes to receive communion should do so – what happens after that is entirely up to God. All those, therefore, who par- ticipate in any form of online worship may be regarded as belonging to the Body of Christ, and we must remember that Christ himself said that he had many sheep which were not of this fold (Jn 10:16). -

This bulletin should provide the information you need to participate fully in the service today. The hymn numbers refer to the blue Hym- nal 1982 in the pew rack. If you need additional guidance, just ask someone near you. Please consider coming to coffee hour in the parish hall after the conclusion of worship. At coffee hour we continue our Sunday celebration and get a chance to meet and socialize with each other and with our guests. The parish hall is to the left after you go out the doors at the back of the church, or through one of the doors on the right-hand side of the church as you face the altar. We are a community centered around the Eucharist, the consecrated bread and wine. We believe in the real presence of Christ's body and blood in the bread and wine that we receive at communion. We also believe that Christ is the host at the altar, and we are all his guests. All who seek God and are drawn to Christ are warmly invited to share in this meal, to partake of Christ's body and blood in the bread and wine. An usher will indicate to you when it is time to go forward. Please kneel or stand at the altar rail, and hold out your hands to receive the bread. You may either eat the bread and then drink from the cup, or hold the bread in your hand to dip into the wine.
