DIOCESE OF BATON ROUGE LITURGICAL INSTRUCTIONS when the BISHOP CELEBRATES MASS GENERAL LITURGICAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR EMCEES Before Mass: 1. The pastor or his designate is responsible for setting up for the ceremony. The bishop must approve any changes from what is listed below. 2. Be certain all is prepared in the church, making sure all needed vessels and books are in place and correctly marked. Prepare sufficient hosts and wine so that the entire congregation will be able to receive Holy Communion consecrated at that Mass. The lectionary is placed on the ambo open to the first reading. Check the microphones and batteries! 3. Seats for concelebrating priests and servers are not to flank the bishop’s presidential chair, but instead be off to the side; the bishop’s presidential chair is to be arranged by itself. (Exception: one deacon, if present, sits on the bishop’s right; a second deacon if present may sit to the bishop’s left.) 4. The altar should be bare at the beginning of the celebration (excepting only the required altar cloth, and candles, which may be placed upon the altar). Corporals, purificators, books and other items are not placed on the altar until the Prepa- ration of the Gifts. 5. If incense is used, refer to note no. 2 in the “Liturgical Instructions for the Sacrament of Confirmation.” 6. Getting started on time is very important. Sometimes it is necessary to be assertive in order to get people moving. 7. Give the following directions to all concelebrating priests: a. During the Eucharistic Prayer, stand well behind and to the left and to the right of the bishop. -

From the very first word of Jesus recorded in the Gospel of Mark reform and renewal have been an essential feature of Christian life and thought – just as they were critical to the message of the prophets of ancient Israel. The preaching of the Gospel presumes at least some openness to change, to acting differently and to thinking about things differently. This process has been repeated over and over again over the centuries. This insight forms the backbone of Gerhard Ladner’s classic work The Idea of Reform, where renovatio and reformatio are constants throughout Christian history.1 All of the great reform movements in the past twenty centuries have been in response to both changing cultural and societal circumstances (like the adaptation of Christianity north of the Alps) and the failure of Christians individually and communally to live up to the demands of the Gospel. -

This Manual was the product of extensive study and consultation by the Clergy Personnel Board and finally a vote of the entire presbyterate. Since the original promulgation of the Manual, some chapters have been revised. This edition prints all the chapters in a uniform format. The Catholic Mass God wants you to encounter Him In the Church's liturgy the divine blessing is fully revealed and communicated. The Father is acknowledged and adored as the source and the end of all the blessings of creation and salvation. In his Word who became incarnate, died, and rose for us, he fills us with his blessings. Through his Word, he pours into our hearts the Gift that contains all gifts, the Holy Spirit. Catechism of the Catholic Church 1082 "Seated at the right hand of the Father" and pouring out the Holy Spirit on his Body which is the Church, Christ now acts through the sacraments he instituted to communicate his grace. The sacraments are perceptible signs (words and actions) accessible to our human nature. By the action of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit they make present efficaciously the grace that they signify. Catechism of the Catholic Church 1084 In the liturgy of the New Covenant every liturgical action, especially the celebration of the Eucharist and the sacraments, is an encounter between Christ and the Church. The liturgical assembly derives its unity from the "communion of the Holy Spirit" who gathers the children of God into the one Body of Christ. This assembly transcends racial, cultural, social - indeed, all human affinities. Catechism of the Catholic Church 1097 Jesus is the Word of God made flesh. It is Him that is being proclaimed at Mass. He is present whether or not the lector knows how to pronounce the words, or is speaking clearly or is dynamic. -
Eucharistic Practice & Sacramental Theology in Pandemic Times
The essential nature of the Eucharist and the modes of its reception DAVID N. BELL & JOHN COURAGE ON BEHALF OF QUEEN’S COLLEGE FACULTY OF THEOLOGY he Faculty of Theology at Queen’s College held two well-attended T consultative sessions by means of GoToMeeting on June 15 and June 22, 2020. The discussions were lively and informative, and alt- hough a great deal of ground was covered, there were three questions of major concern. All three pertain directly to the nature and reception of the Eucharist during the present pandemic. First, how inclusive should the Eucharist be? Or, putting it another way, who constitutes the Body of Christ at the Lord’s Table? Secondly, since the physical reception of the Eucharist – the bread and the wine – is precluded at the present time, in what way or ways can we understand its spiritual reception? And thirdly, can the Eucharist act in a similar way to an icon, namely, as a window connecting this world with the transfigured cosmos? The overwhelming opinion of those present at both sessions was that the Eucharist, which is a multi-faceted celebration, should be as inclusive as possible, and that – once the physical reception is again made possible – no one who presents themselves at the altar should be refused. It is not the business of any member of the clergy to try to channel God’s grace and, as a consequence, anyone who wishes to receive communion should do so – what happens after that is entirely up to God. All those, therefore, who par- ticipate in any form of online worship may be regarded as belonging to the Body of Christ, and we must remember that Christ himself said that he had many sheep which were not of this fold (Jn 10:16).
