James Buonemani

James Buonemani (b. 1956) began his musical career at age 13 when he was appointed Assistant Organist to then Director of Music William Ferris at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Rochester, NY. An early interest in composition won him first prize in a national competition for composers sponsored by Baylor University, at age 15. Since then he has composed music exclusively for the church, much of which can be found on his website MusicaBellaLuna.com. This setting of his “Preces and Responses” has been performed throughout the US and in England and is fast becoming a staple of the Evensong repertoire.

Mr. Buonemani graduated with highest distinction from the Eastman School of Music and the Westminster Choir College and has also studied in England at the Royal School of Church Music. He was awarded the Performer’s Certificate from Eastman in 1978 as an organ student of David Craighead.

He has performed as organist and conductor in such notable venues as St. John the Divine Cathedral (NYC), Grace Cathedral (San Francisco), and in England at Westminster Abbey, Canterbury Cathedral, St. George’s Chapel Windsor, Christ Church Oxford, Wells Cathedral and in Mexico City’s Basilica of our Lady of Guadalupe and on Mexican National Television. Mr. Buonemani collaborated with Los Angeles composer Morten Lauridsen in setting the organ version of Lux Aeterna and performed the world premiere with the Los Angeles Master Chorale in April, 1997 and helped inaugurate the Walt Disney Concert Hall Organ with a performance of the work in 2004. He can also be heard in the premiere recording of this version of the work, among other works, in a 1998 CD release with the Donald Brinegar Singers.

He has appeared before regional and national conventions of the AGO, the American Choral Directors Association, the Association of Anglican Musicians, and the Organ Historical Society. He is a member of Pi Kappa Lamda and is listed in Marquis Who’s Who.

Since 1995, James Buonemani has been Organist & Director of Music for St. James’ Church, Los Angeles, CA.

Choral Evensong marks the end of the working day and prepares for the approaching night. The roots of this service come out of ancient monastic traditions of Christian prayer. In this form, it was created by Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury in the 16th century, as part of the simplification of services within the newly-reformed Church of England. The Episcopal Church, as part of the worldwide Anglican Communion, has inherited this pattern of evening prayer. In this service we are invited to reflect on the business of the past day, to pray for the world and for ourselves, and to commend all into God’s hands as words of Holy Scripture are said and sung. The beauty of the music is offered to help us set our lives in the light of eternity; the same light which dwelt among us in Jesus, and which now illuminates us by the Spirit.     BATES, JAMES M., DMA Music in Honor of the Virgin Mary

    BATES, JAMES M., D.M.A. Music in Honor of the Virgin Mary during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. (2010) Directed by Dr. Welborn Young. 50 pp. Veneration of the Virgin Mary was one of the most important aspects of Christianity during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and sacred music of the time incorporated many Marian concepts. The Virgin Mary was considered the greatest intercessor with God and Christ at a time when fear of Purgatory was strong. Prayers and devotions seeking her aid were among the most significant aspects of spiritual life, and texts of this kind were set to music for devotional use. Beyond her identity as intercessor, there were many additional conceptions of her, and these also found musical expression. The purpose of this study was, first, to explore the basic elements of Marian devotion, and, second, to examine how veneration of Mary was expressed musically. Seven musical compositions from c. 1200-1600 are examined as representative examples. The ―Marian aspects‖ of some compositions may be as straightforward as the use of texts that address Mary, or they may be found in musical and textual symbolism. Of special interest is a particular genre of motet used in private devotions. Precise and detailed information about how sacred music was used in the Middle Ages and Renaissance is scarce, but evidence related to this particular kind of devotional motet helps bring together a number of elements related to Marian meditative practices and the kind of physical settings in which these took place, allowing a greater understanding of the overall performance context of such music.

These are set to music this year by Richard Allain under the title Vero Cras.     Concelebrated Mass ♦ ♦ ♦ The Roman Missal, Third Edition is not enough to do this properly. _______________________________________________________________ The General Instruction of the Roman Missal [GIRM] outlines the principles for concelebrated Mass (nos. 199-251). GIRM provides guidance in nos. 216-236 for Eucharistic Prayers I, II, III, and IV that appears as abbreviated marginal notes within the prayers in the Order of Mass of the Roman Missal, Third Edition. However, the Apostolic See published Preces Eucharisticae pro Concelebratione (Eucharistic Prayers for Concelebration) in 2009 containing more details – and some changes – for all of the Eucharistic Prayers contained in this missal. The USCCB Secretariat for Divine Worship has provided texts for each of these prayers for use during concelebrated Masses. To date, four publishers will provide all or some of these texts – two have separate cards, two have books that include all of the prayers. USCCB also provides free PDF downloads. See pages 2-5 (following) for details. See pages 6-7 for the USCCB download of Eucharistic Prayer III. Some changes to note: 1. The principal celebrant alone sings or says “The mystery of faith” and the concelebrants with the people (but without the celebrant) sing the chosen Memorial Acclamation. 2. Where the marginal notes in the Order of Mass say “Celebrant or one concelebrant”, the new texts read “one [or another] of the concelebrants or the principal celebrant”. Either is permitted; concelebrants doing these parts seems to be preferred. 3. When hands are joined is changed in some places. 4. At the final doxology, in the absence of the Deacon, one concelebrant elevates the chalice while the celebrant elevates the paten with the host.
