Services and Music List

January and February 2017

WELCOME

And so it continued both day and night It is for many, a source of regret that as soon as the angels sing, ‘Glory to God in the highest’, the term ends and with it, . In fact the Christmas season ends on February 2, with the celebration of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple, or Candlemas, and the themes of light from darkness, of God with us and the joy of sharing in the life of God are reflected in the liturgy and music of the season, together with a new understanding of what humanity’s new dignity means for all of us.

We hope very much that you will join us when you can.

The Reverend Nicholas Jepson-Biddle,

Communicant members of other churches in good standing are welcome to receive the Sacrament in this church if they so desire.

Wells Cathedral Commissions invites you to join its growing group of commissioners to help bring important new works into the repertoire of Wells Cathedral Choir and the wider English choral tradition.

Now in its tenth year, Cathedral Commissions has commissioned new works by some of the UK’s finest composers: Richard Allain, Michael Berkeley CBE, Judith Bingham, Jonathan Dove, Gabriel Jackson, John Joubert, Sir James MacMillan, Sir , Tarik O’Regan, Howard Skempton, Sir , and Judith Weir CBE.

We are accepting donations for our 2017 and 2018 commissions, by Howard Skempton and Thea Musgrave, respectively. Being a Cathedral Commissioner enables you to become part of a group that shares the unique experience of enabling a new piece of music to come into being. As a Cathedral Commissioner you will:

• be invited to the main rehearsal for the premiere of the work, with the composer in attendance • be a VIP guest at the premiere • have your score signed by the composer at a special reception • have your name printed in the score; this may include a dedication to a family member or a friend • be kept up to date with the progress of the work after its premiere • directly support the work of a contemporary composer • directly support Wells Cathedral Choir and the wider English choral tradition

Boys have sung in Wells Cathedral for over 1100 years; girls began in 1994. Day by day, 18 boys and 18 girls sing in their own treble lines with the men – the 12 Vicars Choral. Tey often come together for major feast days, concerts, tours, and other special events to perform as Te Great Choir. Te Wells Cathedral Chorister Trust has been providing bursaries to support choristers’ education since 2000, recognizing that singing in a cathedral choir is the best foundation for children with musical gifts. Professional performers and composers from all branches of classical and popular music acknowledge their debt to the early routine of daily singing to the highest standards. Britain’s reputation as a musical nation is, in no small part, due to this great choral tradition and the formative experience it gives to talented youngsters. With the support of its Royal Patron, HRH Te Countess of Wessex, the Trust is determined that no child with musical talent should miss out on these opportunities for fnancial reasons. Te Trust’s aim is to raise enough money to fund all thirty-six choristers. Tis is some way of, and it needs your support for our appeal to help us reach this goal. Te Trust’s website has more information and provides an opportunity to make a donation. Please visit it as soon as you can: www.wcct.co.uk

RECENT RELEASE FROM WELLS CATHEDRAL CHOIR

Featuring the world premiere recording of Missa Wellensis and the Preces and Responses (both written for Wells Cathedral Choir in 2013) alongside other choral works of Tavener, including his world-famous Song for Athene

“[A] fervently committed performance by the Wells Cathedral Choir… thrilling attack… resplendent tutti singing… and the searching unison lines… all betoken expert preparation and genuine identification with the music. A moving programme, devotedly sung and sensitively directed by Matthew Owens.” (BBC Music Magazine, November 2016)
