The CONFESSION ¶Remain Standing Assistant Let us confess to God the sins and shortcomings of the world; its pride, its selfishness, its greed; its evil divisions and hatreds. Let us confess our share in what is wrong, and our failure to seek and establish that peace which God wills for his children. All Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour, in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry, and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen. The President says the ABSOLUTION: President Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen. The COLLECT President The Lord be with you, All and also with you. President Almighty Father, whose will is to restore all things in your beloved Son, the King of all: govern the hearts and minds of those in authority, and bring the families of the nations, divided and torn apart by the ravages of sin, to be subject to his just and gentle rule; who is alive and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. All Amen. The EPISTLE Romans 8 vv. 31–39 ¶Sit Read by Major General A.A. Milton CB OBE, Royal Marines What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not withhold his own Son, but gave him up for all of us, will he not with him also give us everything else? Who will bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us. Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, ‘For your sake we are being killed all day long; we are accounted as sheep to be slaughtered.’ No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. For the word of the Lord All Thanks be to God The GRADUAL PSALM Psalm 130 is sung: 1. Out of the deep have I called unto thee, O Lord : Lord, hear my voice. 2. O let thine ears consider well : the voice of my complaint. 3. If thou, Lord, wilt be extreme to mark what is done amiss : O Lord, who may abide it? 4. For there is mercy with thee : therefore shalt thou be feared. 5. I look for the Lord; my soul doth wait for him : in his word is my trust. 6. My soul fleeth unto the Lord : before the morning watch, I say, before the morning watch. 7. O Israel, trust in the Lord, for with the Lord there is mercy : and with him is plenteous redemption. 8. And he shall redeem Israel : from all his sins. tone iv The GOSPEL John 15 vv. 9–17 ¶Stand Please stand as the Gospel Procession moves from the Chancel. The GOSPEL is announced: Gospeller Hear the holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Saint John. All Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus said to his disciples. ‘As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. ‘This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another’. Gospeller This is the Gospel of the the Lord. All Praise to you, O Christ. Hostias et preces tibi Domine laudis offerimus, tu suscipe pro animabus illis, quarum hodie memoriam facimus; fac eas, Domine, de morte transire ad vitam. Quam olim Abrahae promisisti et semini ejus. Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory, deliver the souls of all the faithful departed from the pains of hell and from the deep waters. Deliver them from the mouth of the lion; let hell not swallow them, let them not fall into darkness. Let St Michael the standard-bearer conduct them to the holy light, which of old you promised to Abraham and his seed.
