R.E. Requirement Guidelines

This year in the Religious Education Program we are re-instituting Prayer Requirements for each grade level.

Please review the required to be memorized, recited from text, \understood, or experienced for the grade that you are teaching (see p. 1)

Each week, please take some class time to work on these prayers so that the R.E. students are able not only to recite the prayers but also to understand what they are saying and/or reading.

The Student Sheet (p. 2) will need to be copied for each of your students, the student’s name placed on the sheet, and grid completed for each of the prayers they are expected to know, or understand, or recite from text, or experience.

You may wish to assign the Assistant Catechist or High School Assistant to work, individually, with the students in order to assess their progress.

We will be communicating these prayer requirements to the parents of your students, and later in the year, each student will take their sheet home for their parents to review their progress.

We appreciate your assistance in teaching our youth to know their prayers and to pray often to … to adore God, to thank God, to ask God’s pardon, to ask God’s help in all things, to pray for all people. Remind your students that God always hears our prayers, but He does not always give us what we ask for because we do not always know what is best for others or ourselves.

“Prayer is the desire and attempt to communicate with God.” Remember, no prayer is left unanswered!

I Confess (Confiteor) I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

Memorare Remember, O most gracious virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly to you, O virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy, hear and answer me. Amen.

Nicene Creed (Profession of Faith)

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Our Father Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed by thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Rosary Catholics pray the rosary to honor Mary and remember the important events in the life of Jesus and Mary. These events are called “Mysteries”. The Mysteries are divided into four groups. We begin praying the rosary by praying the Apostles’ Creed, the Our Father, and . Each mystery of the rosary is prayed by praying the Our Father once, the Hail Mail ten times, and the Glory Be once. When we have finished the last mystery, we pray the Hail, Holy Queen.

Stations of the Cross The Stations of the Cross is a devotion which consists in following our Lord in spirit on His sorrowful journey from Pilate’s palace to His death and burial on Mount Calvary. In the early days of the Church, Christians used to trace the steps our Lord took in carrying His Cross, but since most people could not make the trip to Jerusalem, the Church instituted the devotion known as the Stations of the Cross. In every you will see fourteen pictures or carvings which help you to recall the principal events of Christ’s last hours. “Making the Stations” means that you walk from the first Station to the fourteenth pausing at each one to meditate on the scene represented. Here are the titles of the Stations of the Cross:

1. Jesus is condemned to death. 2. Jesus accepts his Cross. 3. Jesus falls the first time. 4. Jesus meets His afflicted mother. 5. Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus to carry His Cross. 6. Veronica wipes the face of Jesus. 7. Jesus falls the second time. 8. Jesus meets the women. 9. Jesus falls the third time. 10. Jesus is stripped of His clothes. 11. Jesus is nailed to the Cross. 12.
