OUR VISION: A world where people experience God’s love and are made whole. OUR MISSION: To share the love of Jesus through compassion, inclusivity, creativity and learning. Evensong 9 August 2018 5:15 p.m. Evensong Thursday in the Eleventh Week after Pentecost • 9 August 2018 • 5:15 pm Welcome to Grace Cathedral. Choral Evensong marks the end of the working day and prepares for the approaching night. The roots of this service come out of ancient monastic traditions of Christian prayer. In this form, it was created by Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury in the 16th century, as part of the simplification of services within the newly-reformed Church of England. The Episcopal Church, as part of the worldwide Anglican Communion, has inherited this pattern of evening prayer. In this service we are invited to reflect on the business of the past day, to pray for the world and for ourselves, and to commend all into God’s hands as words of Holy Scripture are said and sung. The beauty of the music is offered to help us set our lives in the light of eternity; the same light which dwelt among us in Jesus, and which now illuminates us by the Spirit. May this service be a blessing to you. Voluntary Canzonetta William Mathias The people stand as the procession enters. The Invitatory and Psalter Opening Sentence Said by the officiant. Preces John Rutter Officiant O Lord, open thou our lips. Choir And our mouth shall shew forth thy praise. O God, make speed to save us.

  • A Concise Glossary of the Genres of Eastern Orthodox Hymnography
Journal of the International Society for Orthodox Church Music Vol. 4 (1), Section III: Miscellanea, pp. 198–207 ISSN 2342-1258 https://journal.fi/jisocm A Concise Glossary of the Genres of Eastern Orthodox Hymnography Elena Kolyada [email protected] The Glossary contains concise entries on most genres of Eastern Orthodox hymnography that are mentioned in the article by E. Kolyada “The Genre System of Early Russian Hymnography: the Main Stages and Principles of Its Formation”.1 On the one hand the Glossary is an integral part of the article, therefore revealing and corroborating its principal conceptual propositions. However, on the other hand it can be used as an independent reference resource for hymnographical terminology, useful for the majority of Orthodox Churches worldwide that follow the Eastern Rite: Byzantine, Russian, Bulgarian, Serbian et al., as well as those Western Orthodox dioceses and parishes, where worship is conducted in English. The Glossary includes the main corpus of chants that represents the five great branches of the genealogical tree of the genre system of early Christian hymnography, together with their many offshoots. These branches are 1) psalms and derivative genres; 2) sticheron-troparion genres; 3) akathistos; 4) canon; 5) prayer genres (see the relevant tables, p. 298-299).2 Each entry includes information about the etymology of the term, a short definition, typological features and a basic statement about the place of a particular chant in the daily and yearly cycles of services in the Byzantine rite.3 All this may help anyone who is involved in the worship or is simply interested in Orthodox liturgiology to understand more fully specific chanting material, as well as the general hymnographic repertoire of each service.

Welcome to the season after Pentecost at Trinity Church We are so glad you are here to pray with us today. This booklet will be your guide for Sunday worship here through the summer. We are now in the longest liturgical season of the year: the time of the formation of the church. Having walked and prayed and sung—through the Advent of Jesus, the Epiphany manifestations of God in Christ, the penitential pilgrimage of preparation in Lent, the intensity of the Passion in Holy Week, and the joyous season of the mystery of the resurrection in Eastertide—we come now to the time where we, the Lord’s people, are learning to be the body of Christ. At Trinity, we mark the liturgical seasons with predictable variations. For the summer, the congregation and summer choirs will speak the psalms and sing the Sanctus, Lord’s Prayer, and Agnus Dei (which can be found on the back cover) together. And always, please sing the hymns with courage! You’ll find the psalms on the scripture insert, handed out each Sunday. The hymns are found in the blue Hymnal. Please stand and sing for all hymns. The prayer for the Eucharist is found in the Book of Common Prayer. The order of service and music selections for each Sunday may be found on the page for the day. This booklet is designed to be reused each week. Please leave it in the pew as you depart. • BATES, JAMES M., DMA Music in Honor of the Virgin Mary
BATES, JAMES M., D.M.A. Music in Honor of the Virgin Mary during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. (2010) Directed by Dr. Welborn Young. 50 pp. Veneration of the Virgin Mary was one of the most important aspects of Christianity during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and sacred music of the time incorporated many Marian concepts. The Virgin Mary was considered the greatest intercessor with God and Christ at a time when fear of Purgatory was strong. Prayers and devotions seeking her aid were among the most significant aspects of spiritual life, and texts of this kind were set to music for devotional use. Beyond her identity as intercessor, there were many additional conceptions of her, and these also found musical expression. The purpose of this study was, first, to explore the basic elements of Marian devotion, and, second, to examine how veneration of Mary was expressed musically. Seven musical compositions from c. 1200-1600 are examined as representative examples. The ―Marian aspects‖ of some compositions may be as straightforward as the use of texts that address Mary, or they may be found in musical and textual symbolism. Of special interest is a particular genre of motet used in private devotions. Precise and detailed information about how sacred music was used in the Middle Ages and Renaissance is scarce, but evidence related to this particular kind of devotional motet helps bring together a number of elements related to Marian meditative practices and the kind of physical settings in which these took place, allowing a greater understanding of the overall performance context of such music.
