August 15th, 2021 Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Rev 11:19a:12:1-6a,10b Ps 45:10,11,12,16 1 Cor 15:2-27 Lk 1:39-56

A Message from the Pastor,

Today, Catholics on what would normally be the 20th Sunday in , celebrate the feast of the “Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary” into heaven. The of the Assumption has always been celebrated as a on Aug 15 each year. And because of its great importance has replaced this Sundays’ Liturgy. This significant feast day recalls the spiritual and physical departure of the mother of Jesus Christ from the earth, when both her body and her soul were Assumed, (taken up) into the presence of God. Although the bodily is not explicitly recorded in Scripture, tradition identifies her with the “woman clothed with the sun” who is described in the 12th chapter of the Book of . The passage calls that woman's appearance “a great sign” which “appeared in heaven,” indicating that she is the mother of the Messi- ah and has “the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.” It is only fitting that the mother of God whose most pure womb was the first tabernacle of our Lord’s body should “not” be left to see corruption, but be Assumed body and soul into heaven. As we celebrate the Assumption, the scripture passage that has always come to life for me is depicted from the cross. Jesus said to St. John, Behold your mother, and to Mary, behold your son. By these words, Jesus gives his Blessed Mother to us as our (spiritual) Mother. The significance is the Blessed Virgin Mary is not only Jesus’ Mother, but our mother as well. And we now have a mother with a special place in heaven to inter- cede for us and guide us on the way. “Mary Queen of heaven, pray for us who have recourse to thee.” God Bless you all, Fr. LeRoy

Jgs 9:6-15 Background on the Gospel Reading Ps 21:2-3,4-5,6-7 Today's feast celebrates Mary's Assumption into heaven. It is one of three feasts of Mt 20:1-16 Mary that are Holy Days of Obligation for Catholics in the United States. January 1 is Thursday, August 19 the feast of Mary, the Mother of God, and December 8 is the feast of the Immaculate Weekday Conception of Mary. The assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven has long Jgs 11:29-39a been held as an important Catholic belief. The belief was not defined as dogma, how- Ps 40:5,7-8a,8b-9,10 ever, until 1950 by Pope Pius XII. The dogma teaches that Mary, who was without sin, Mt 22:1-14 was taken, body and soul, into the glory of heaven. Friday, August 20 The Gospel for this holy day recalls Mary's actions after the announcement of Jesus' Saint Bernard, and Doctor birth by the Angel Gabriel. Mary goes to visit her cousin Elizabeth who is also with Ru 1:1,3-6,14b-16,22 child. Elizabeth greets Mary with full recognition of the roles they and their unborn Ps 146:5-6ab,6c-7,8-9a,9bc-10 children will play in God's plan for salvation. Mary responds to Elizabeth's greeting Mt 22:34-40 with her song of praise, the Magnificat. Both women recall and echo God's history of showing favor upon the people of Israel. Mary's Magnificat, in particular, echoes the Saturday, August 21 Saint Pius X, Pope song of praise offered by Hannah, the mother of Samuel. Only Mary, who was born without stain of original sin—the Sunday, August 22 —could give birth to Christ, who is fully God and fully human. 21st Sunday of Ordinary Time This is called the Immaculate Conception. Because of Mary's role in God's plan of Jos 24:1-2a,15-17,18b salvation, she does not suffer from the effects of sin, which are death and decay. Ps 34:2-3,16-17,18-19,20-21 Mary is the first to receive the fullness of the redemption that her son has won for all Eph 5:21-32 or 5:2a,25-32 of humanity. The Church, therefore, recognizes Mary as the sign of the salvation Jn 6:60-69 promised to all. Today's Gospel highlights Mary's faith. Mary's faith enabled her to recognize the work Formed.org of God in her people's history and in her own life. Her openness to God allowed God Registering for FORMED to work through her so that salvation might come to all. Mary is a model and symbol is easier than ever of the Church.
