BIBLE STUDY

Father Ken’s Bible Study is a good way to meet parishioners and expand your knowledge of your faith and the bible. Next class is Wednesday, July 7, 12:30 to 1:30, and again 5:30 to 6:30 for working folks!

ST VINCENT DE PAUL HELP NEEDED URGENTLY

We are in serious need of fresh troops. Understandably, the COVID Crisis has diminished our numbers of volunteers. The remaining volunteers are stretched as they cope with the workload. This need for help has doubled as we recover from the devastation of the fires and the homelessness they have creat- ed.

Volunteers are needed in every area of our operation: We especially need bilingual individuals for work in the Front Office, Social Service, and Counseling, etc. We also need workers in Kitchen/Dining for cooks, servers, and helpers; Urban Rest Stop to supervise showers and washer/dryers; Retail Store as clerks/sorters/cashiers; Warehouse for inventory management/intake/minor repair. You can volunteer as little or as much as your schedule allows. Many of these positions require little experience or training and the duties can be quickly learned. We are here to help you learn your new skill. Current Oregon COVID 19 Protocols are observed.

Working at St. Vincent de Paul’s lets you give back to the community and practice faith, hope, and charity-the Christian virtues. If you have been wanting to help others in this time of need here is your opportunity. It is also a chance to meet new Christian friends. Many volunteers consider their time spent as the highlight of their week. It can be life-changing for you and for those whom you serve. Take it to prayer, open your heart, and call 541 772-3828 to volunteer.

July 2, 2021

Dear Sacred Heart Family, Please welcome our new parochial vicar, Fr. Bonaventure! Fr. Bonaventure began celebrat- ing Mass at Sacred Heart on July 1 and looks forward to meeting you and being part of our parish family. We are looking forward to getting to know Fr. Bonaventure too and very happy to have him at our parish. Welcome to Sacred Heart, Fr. Bonaventure! We also have an important update this week. From Sample’s June 30th, 2021, pastoral message, titled “The Church draws her life from the ”, please read, below: “…With the new status of the COVID pandemic, resulting in far fewer infections, hospitali- zations, and deaths, and with so many having chosen to receive the vaccine, the time has come for the most significant change in a long time regarding our divine . Therefore, I am rescinding the general dispensation from the obligation to participate at Holy Mass on Sundays and holydays of obligation, which I granted on April 6, 2020. This becomes effective July 16, 2021. This means that the faithful are once again obligated to participate in the Holy Mass on Sundays and on holydays of obligation. I want to emphasize that a serious reason will excuse one from this obliga- tion by virtue of the Church’s law itself and as taught in the Catechism of the (n. 2181). If you have any questions or concerns about what constitutes a serious reason in your partic- ular situation, please speak to your pastor.” “…My dear Brothers and Sisters, it’s time to return to the Eucharist with joy. For those of you who have already resumed your practice of attending Holy Mass, welcome back! For those who have yet to do so, there is no time like the present. Jesus waits for you with His love beyond all measure! “ Sincerely yours in Christ, Most. Rev. Alexander K. Sample You will find the full text of Archbishop Sample’s pastoral letter and the “Decree Renewing the Obligation to Participate in the Mass on Sundays and Other Holy Days of Obligation” attached to this e-mail. Effective June 30, 2021, the Archdiocese also stated that all liturgical celebrations and faith gath- erings are allowed to take place without capacity limitations or social distancing. Therefore, since all seating will once again be in the church, we will no longer use the parish hall for seating during Sunday Masses. Per the Archdiocese’s 6/30/21 guidelines, only the Host will be offered to the faithful at this time, and the Sign of Peace will not be exchanged through physical contact. Masks may be worn but are not required. Holy water may also return to the fonts. It’s been long and difficult journey since March 2020, but we’re reaching the light at the end of the tunnel now, thanks be to God. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to let Fr. Ken, Fr. Moises, Fr. Bonaventure or the parish staff know. As Archbishop Sample wrote in his letter, “I am especially grateful to all of the faithful of the Archdiocese of Portland for your pa- tience, understanding, and cooperation during this past 15 months. With rare exception, you main- tained a spirit of unity and cohesiveness, even when you may have disagreed with the decisions be- ing made. Your witness to unity and solidarity was inspiring, truly showing what it means to be the mystical .” Thank you, and may God bless you! In His Love, Ann Brophy, Pastoral Associate P.S. We wish you all a safe and fun Fourth of July weekend! And try to stay cool!

The Parish Office will be closed Monday, July 5th in observation of Independence Day.

To all Sacred Heart parishioners! Just having arrived on June 30th, I am already overwhelmed with the very generous wel- come from Fr. Ken and the parishioners of Sacred Heart! Originally from Lebanon, Ore- gon, since 2002, I have been a Franciscan Friar of the Renewal, living mostly in New York City, but now I'll be here for as long as God will have me, serving as a priest of this parish. I am so grateful to my religious superior of the , Archbishop Sample, and Fr. Ken for welcoming me here. I hope to get to know as many of you as possible. Gratefully, Fr. Bonaventure

Latin Mass Invitation

Everyone is invited to attend the Latin Mass on Sunday afternoons at 3:30 PM. This is a wonderful ex- perience that includes Gregorian chant, beautiful vestments from India, a glorious High Altar, and the Mass in Latin. You do not need to know Latin to appreciate the beauty of this Mass. There are mis- salettes for English/Latin and Spanish/Latin translations available as well. Father Stephen Kenyon is the Priest who presides at this Mass. So set aside time on a Sunday afternoon and experience the Latin Mass—another treasure of our Church for you.
