page 1 of 3 Sacred Heart August 15, 2021 Rejoice! There is a commercial on PBS that says: “The pandemic has been like a long Norwegian winter.” Everyone can identify with that. We are now 18 months into this journey. In the midst of the gloom, the words of Mary jump out at us: “My spirit rejoices in God my savior.” Our spirits could really use some rejoicing. The pandemic is not over yet, but we have made some real progress. We can encounter each other again with some precautions in place. Getting vaccinated has been a great relief and has opened up some sense of normalcy. Families are getting together again. People are cautiously taking vacations, and going shopping no longer seems like we are risking our lives. Recently, families have begun to gather to celebrate the funerals that were delayed. Though there is always significant sadness, there is an inevitable sense of joy as families and friends gather together. It becomes impossible not to have a good laugh. Then, there is always the spark of joy that ignites when elders encounter the children of our families. Young life always has a way of lifting the heart. Some families have new born children. Parents still protective - babies are not vaccinated, but there is always a radiance of joy that babies bring to our hearts. page 2 of 3 Sacred Heart August 15, 2021 In the midst of the pandemic, it is important to remember, there is still rejoicing in our lives. This joy is enhanced when we gather together, drawn by Christ, to celebrate the Eucharist. “My spirit rejoices in God, my savior.” Today’s Feast, the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is intended to be a moment of joy in our lives. The joy is not like the quick thrill of going down a water slide. It is a joy that is born out of deep reflection on the life and death of Mary. The death and resurrection of Jesus started something new. St. Matthew tells us that when Jesus died on the cross, immediately some of the saints of old started to appear to people in Jerusalem. Jesus did not rise alone. Those who had been living in the shadow of death also rose with him. The Assumption of Mary teaches that Mary also immediately shared in Christ’s resurrection. This makes total sense. Right from the beginning of her life Mary was caught up in the redeeming action of Christ. The assumption proclaims that her death was also caught up in Christ. Mary’s whole person, body and soul, is now with God. Over the last 18 months there has been a lot of death. There is always grief when a loved one dies. page 3 of 3 Sacred Heart August 15, 2021 The Assumption of Mary invites us to leave the door open for rejoicing. For the faithful, life is changed, not ended, when this earthly dwelling turns to dust; an eternal dwelling is made ready for us in heaven. My spirit rejoices in God, my savior..

He wrote his doctoral dissertation on Hans-Georg Gadamer and the Catholic Theology of Tradition (Berkeley: Graduate Theological Union, 1985). In 2005 he published The Foundations of Karl Rahner, a paraphrase of Rahner’s Foundations of Catholic Faith.] Abstract Karl Rahner completed his Assumptio Beatae Mariae Virginis in 1951 but did not receive permission to publish it from his Jesuit superiors. The work was only published in 2004, twenty years after Rahner’s death. This essay examines his treatise on the Assumption of Mary and the objections of the censors. The relation between the treatise and Rahner’s publication of 1947, “On the Theology of Death,” receives special attention. The shorter work was appended to the Marian treatise as an “excursus” but laid the foundation for the later work. Rahner reinterpreted the dogma of the Assumption in light of the resurrection of the dead, which the assumption of Mary’s body and soul into heaven anticipates. Among Rahner’s many speculative comments, this essay focuses on three. First, at the final resurrection, the soul (separated at death from the body) re-creates a new and glorified body as its fulfillment and perfection. Second, the glorified body expresses a metaphysical holiness that matures between the moment of death and the final judgment. And third, the resurrection of the body completes the transformation of the world as a new heaven and a new earth that began with the Incarnation.

Part 1 – Church Becomes Powerful Institution Evidence of Rome’s power grab • In 2nd century we see bishops over regions; people looked to them for guidance. • Around 195AD there was dispute over which day to celebrate Passover (14th Nissan vs. Sunday) • Polycarp said 14th Nissan, but now Victor (Bishop of Rome) liked Sunday. • A council was convened to decide, and they decided on Sunday. • But bishops of Asia continued the Passover on 14th Nissan. • Eusebius wrote what happened next: “Thereupon Victor, who presided over the church at Rome, immediately attempted to cut off from the common unity the parishes of all Asia, with the churches that agreed with them, as heterodox [heretics]; and he wrote letters and declared all the brethren there wholly excommunicate.” (Eus., Hist. eccl. 5.24.9) Everyone started looking to Rome to settle disputes • Rome was always ending up on the winning side in their handling of controversial topics. 1 • So through a combination of the fact that Rome was the most important city in the ancient world and its bishop was always right doctrinally then everyone started looking to Rome. • So Rome took that power and developed it into the Roman Catholic Church by the 600s. Church granted power to rule • Constantine gave the pope power to rule over Italy, Jerusalem, Constantinople and Alexandria.

Hopefully, no one was that obvious at treating wealthy members better than poor ones. Sadly, prejudice is a sin that is just as prevalent today as it was 2000 years ago. Today we have laws for business and government to prevent prejudice. But the subtler forms of judging people by their race, clothing, speech, religion, etc. sometimes hide behind patriotism, faith, or the desire to protect our families. So how can we stop it? One reason for prejudice is ignorance. Some people will believe anything they hear or read, especially if they see it on the internet. When you get an e-mail that says "true Americans" are white, English-speaking Chris- tians, there is probably some prejudice behind it. The only way to fight ignorance is with the truth. Jesus himself said the truth will set you free. (Jn 8:32) He ignored the laws/traditions that said you cannot associate with unclean people, Gentiles, or sinners.

Mary the Blessed Virgin
January 1 – Mary the Blessed Virgin Mary is venerated with a special cult, called by St. Thomas Aquinas, hyperdulia, as the holiest of all creatures. The main events of her life are celebrated as liturgical feasts of the universal Church. Traditionally, she was declared the daughter of Sts. Joachim and Anne. Born in Jerusalem, Mary was presented in the Temple and took a vow of virginity. Living in Nazareth, Mary was visited by the archangel Gabriel, who announced to her that she would become the Mother of Jesus, by the Holy Spirit. She became betrothed to St. Joseph and went to visit her cousin, Elizabeth, who was bearing St. John the Baptist. Acknowledged by Elizabeth as the Mother of God, Mary intoned the Magnificat. When Emperor Augustus declared a census throughout the vast Roman Empire, Mary and St. Joseph went to Bethlehem where he was born, as he belonged to the House of David. There Mary gave birth to Jesus and was visited by the Three Kings. Mary and Joseph presented Jesus in the Temple, where St. Simeon rejoiced and Mary received word of sorrows to come later. Warned to flee, St. Joseph and Mary went to Egypt to escape the wrath of King Herod. They remained in Egypt until King Herod died and then returned to Nazareth. Nothing is known of Mary's life during the next years except for a visit to the Temple of Jerusalem, at which time Mary and Joseph sought the young Jesus, who was in the Temple with the learned elders. The first recorded miracle of Jesus was performed at a wedding in Cana, and Mary was instrumental in calling Christ's attention to the need.

The Assumption of Mary - Part II: Typology By Greg Witherow In our previous article we saw that Enoch, Elijah and perhaps Moses were bodily assumed into heaven and as such, provide precedence in our case for M ary’s Assumption. We will now turn our attention to typology1, establishing a link between the Ark of the Covenant and Mary. Once the typological link is established, we will glean from it further evidence for Mary’s bodily Assumption into heaven. But first, a brief background. The Ark of the Covenant was the most holy object in the Old Testament. In the Temple the Ark resided behind the veil in the holy of holies, the inner sanctum, where only the high priest could enter once a year. The Ark contained three objects consisting of manna from heaven, Aaron’s rod that had budded and the tablets of the Ten Commandments. The Ark was a box-like object made of acacia wood covered in pure gold. Two cherubim on each end, facing each other were mounted on the top. The Ark had been designed under specific instructions given by God and was not to be touched by man. As such, it had rings on both sides enabling it to be carried by poles. In the gospel of Luke we read that Mary was given a message by the angel Gabriel, namely that she was to conceive a son by the Holy Ghost. Mary then makes her way to her relative Elizabeth in the Judean hill country. As she approaches Elizabeth she greets her, where upon John the Baptist leaps for joy in his mother’s womb and Elizabeth cries out - for why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? Elizabeth then explains the reaction of her son.

Where Did Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Come From? The Solemnity of the Sacred Heart is celebrated throughout the world on the Friday following the Feast of Corpus Christi. Kathy Schiffer Every year, 19 days after Pentecost, the Catholic Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. But where did that tradition originate? Devotion to the wounded heart of Jesus has its origins in the eleventh century, when pious Christians meditated on the Five Wounds of Christ. There grew up among the faithful prayers to the Sacred Heart, prayers to the Shoulder Wound of Christ—private devotions which helped Christians to focus on the passion and death of Christ, and thus to grow in love for our Savior who had suffered and died for us. It was not until 1670, however, that a French priest, Fr. Jean Eudes, celebrated the first Feast of the Sacred Heart. Around the same time, a pious sister by the name of Margaret Mary Alacoque began to report visions of Jesus. He appeared to her frequently, and in December 1673, he permitted Margaret Mary—as had once allowed St. Gertrude—to rest her head upon his Heart. As she experienced the comfort of his presence, Jesus told her of his great love and explained that he had chosen her to make his love and his goodness known to all. The following year, in June or July of 1674, Margaret Mary reported that Jesus wanted to be honored under the figure of His Heart of flesh. He asked the faithful to receive Him in the Eucharist frequently, especially on the First Friday of the month, and to observe a Holy Hour of devotion to Him.
