Theology Corner Vol. 62 – September 30th, 2018

Theological Reflections by Paul Chutikorn - Director of Faith Formation

“Why Do Catholics Care about Symbols and Signs so Much?”

Almost a year ago, I had written a Theology Corner about why Christ often spoke in parables, and this discussion led to an understanding of the Sacraments as efficacious “signs.” As I mentioned then, Christ’s parables (or illustrations) and the sacraments themselves, are ways of communicating truths that are more fully understood when they appeal to our human nature. In other words, if we do not have some point of reference by which we can understand something through our senses, we will not have a complete knowledge of it. I again talk about this now because I want to show how the Catholic faith places such a high value on symbols and signs in the in order that we as human beings can come to a fuller knowledge of the supernatural realities at hand through our human mode of understanding. Recall that there is a duality in our nature in that we are composed of body and spirit (matter and spiritual form). For this reason, we have the capacity (intellect) to understand spiritual realities, but we must come into contact with this knowledge first through physical things. Thus, the Church recognizes this need for signs, symbols, gestures, language, and actions in order that we can intimately come into contact with these supernatural realities, and better understand the presence of such a reality in our midst.

Most of these signs and symbols are witnessed directly in the Mass itself. First, we walk into a church and the typical Catholic church will have beautiful stained-glass windows, and lots of sacred art surrounding the inside of the building. This is meant to immediately communicate to us the beauty and sacredness of being in the presence of God. There is meant to be a clear distinction between life out in the world and the experience of the liturgy. I do not at all mean to say that life out in the world should not be reflective of our life in Christ, but rather, that when we step into the Mass, we should immediately turn our attention to what is really happening. In order for this to occur, we have to be shaken up a little bit to bring ourselves into a state in which we are fully aware of the real presence of Christ himself in the .

Each part of the Mass has symbolic meaning or points us toward a full experience of some specific value. For example, we draw a cross on our heads, lips, and hearts as a physical gesture to show that we want the Gospel message of Christ to be on our mind, our lips, and our heart. We genuflect to both give proper respect to our Lord, but also to bring ourselves through this posture, into the realization that we are not God and make an action of humility before Him. For a similar reason, we kneel at various points during the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The priest holds the Book of the Gospels up during the Alleluia to show its eminence, the servers hold candles on both sides of the ambo during the proclamation of the Gospel in order to show us that the words of Christ are a light to the world which leads us out of darkness. Even the priest washes his hands in reminding himself of his need to be cleansed of his sins. There are so many aspects of the Mass that involves ritual as a way for us all to take sensible realities and make known a more hidden reality. If we got rid of these symbols and signs altogether, we would essentially be devoid of any real human sense of the supernatural life, as well as any real sense of importance in the participation of the people in the work of God.
