The Morality of Magisterium 87 The Morality of Magisterium by Gerard Mannion Magisterium is a moral issue. To state such is not to re-emphasise that teaching authority can and should pertain to morality. Rather, that the relationship perceived from the other way around equally applies. An enormous amount of literature has already been written in relation to how magisterium relates to moral dilemmas as well as teachings and wider guidance for ethical discernment. But something which has been frequently overlooked in the history of the church and particularly so in recent times is that the way in which magisterium is understood and the manner in which it is exercised have moral implications themselves. Therefore, all due ethical consideration should be given to how magisterium is perceived and shaped long before it is exercised. One of the purposes of this paper is to try and remind ourselves of this and of the implications that follow from such a reminder. It also seeks to encourage moral theologians, ecclesiologists, canon law- yers and church leaders alike to keep this simple observation in mind. 1. Chapter 14 Discernment of Spirits It is indispensable for the direction of souls and for the study of extraordinary mystical phenomena to be able to distinguish the various spirits under which an individual may act or be acted upon. As used here, the word spirit refers to two different types of motivating factors or powers. The spirit of an individual refers to the internal inclination to good or evil, and it manifests itself with such regularity that it must be considered a personal trait. Thus, if a person has a propensity to prayer, he or she is said to possess the spirit of prayer; if there is a tendency to arguments and altercations, he or she is said to possess a spirit of contradiction, etc. Understood in this sense, the spirit of a person is usually the result of both temperament and character. But it is also possible for an individual to come under the influence of a spirit that is extrinsic to the personality, whether from God or the devil. For that reason it is the function of the discernment of spirits to judge whether a given act or repetition of acts flows from the spirit of God, the diabolical spirit, or the spirit of the individual. There are two types of discernment of spirit: acquired and infused. Acquired discernment of spirits is complementary to ordinary spiritual direction and can be cultivated by all who use the proper means. Infused discernment of spirits is a charismatic gift or gratia gratis data, which is granted by God to certain individuals. -

Mellon Collection 1937.1.1 ENTRY The painting shows the Madonna seated frontally on an elaborate, curved, two-tier, wooden throne of circular plan.[1] She is supporting the blessing Christ child on her left arm according to the iconographic tradition of the Hodegetria.[2] Mary is wearing a red mantle over an azure dress. The child is dressed in a salmon-colored tunic and blue mantle; he holds a red scroll in his left hand, supporting it on his lap.[3] In the upper corners of the panel, at the height of the Virgin’s head, two medallions contain busts of two archangels [fig. 1] [fig. 2], with their garments surmounted by loroi and with scepters and spheres in their hands.[4] It was Bernard Berenson (1921) who recognized the common authorship of this work and Enthroned Madonna and Child and who concluded—though admitting he had no specialized knowledge of art of this cultural area—that they were probably works executed in Constantinople around 1200.[5] These conclusions retain their authority and continue to stir debate. -

Portier, Ph.D. Yves Congar’s theology of the laity and ministries is unified on the basis of his adaptation of Christ’s triplex munera to the laity and his specification of ministry as one aspect of the laity’s participation in Christ’s triplex munera. The seminal insight of Congar’s adaptation of the triplex munera is illumined by situating his work within his historical and ecclesiological context. The U.S. reception of Congar’s work on the laity and ministries, however, evinces that Congar’s principle insight has received a mixed reception by Catholic theologians in the United States due to their own historical context as well as their specific constructive theological concerns over the laity’s secularity, or the priority given to lay ministry over the notion of a laity. -

FATHER MARK SCHULTE HOMILY Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time (B) June 13, 2021 “Sacred Heart – Immaculate Heart” In recent days, the Church has celebrated two very important Feast days, the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. We know that the heart is the seat of love. When you give someone your heart you give them your love, you give them the most intimate and sacred part of you. For Jesus, his greatest act of love was His passion and death for us. As He hung on the cross, the soldier’s lance pierced His side and into His heart and out flowed blood and water. The water to cleanse us of sin in baptism and His blood to nourish us sacramentally. For these and other reasons, the church and the faithful venerate the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is the very heart of God (CCC 478, 694, 1225) (Jn 19:34). Closely associated with the Sacred Heart of Jesus is the Immaculate Heart of His Mother Mary. The flesh of the heart of Jesus comes from her flesh. The suffering of Mary is intimately related to the suffering of Jesus. The prophecy of Simeon is fulfilled in her suffering. He said: “A sword will pierce your heart”. Her sword of suffering is her sorrow, in witnessing the suffering of her son Jesus. She contemplated from early on that the life of her son would consist in suffering for His people (Lk 2:22-39, 51). Mary united her intense suffering with the suffering of her Son Jesus. -
The Pietà in Historical Perspective
The Pietà in historical perspective The Pietà is not a scene that can be found in the Gospels. The Gospels describe Crucifixion (El Greco), Deposition or descent from the Cross (Rubens), Laying on the ground (Epitaphios), Lamentation (Giotto), Entombment (Rogier Van de Weyden) So How did this image emerge? Background one-devotional images • Narrative images from the Gospel, e.g Icon of Mary at foot of cross • Devotional images, where scene is taken out of its historical context to be used for prayer. e.g. Man of Sorrows from Constantinople and print of it by Israhel van Meckenhem. The Pietà is one of a number of devotional images that developed from the 13th century, which went with intense forms of prayer in which the person was asked to imagine themselves before the image speaking with Jesus. It emerged first in the Thuringia area of Germany, where there was a tradition of fine wood carving and which was also open to mysticism. Background two-the position of the Virgin Mary • During the middle ages the position of Mary grew in importance, as reflected in the doctrine of the Assumption (Titian), the image of the coronation of the Virgin (El Greco) • So too did the emphasis on Mary sharing in the suffering of Jesus as in this Mater Dolorosa (Titian) • Further background is provided by the Orthodox image of the threnos which was taken up by Western mystics, and the image of The Virgin of Humility A devotional gap? • So the Pietà, which is not a Gospel scene, started to appear as a natural stage, between the Gospel scenes of the crucifixion smf the deposition or descent from the cross on the one hand, and the stone of annointing, the lamentation, and the burial on the other. -
