USCCB Prayers A Rosary for Life: The Sorrowful Mysteries The following meditations on the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary are offered as a prayer for all life, from conception to natural death. The First Sorrowful Mystery The Agony in the Garden Prayer Intention: For all who are suffering from abandonment or neglect, that compassionate individuals will come forward to offer them comfort and aid. Jesus comes with his disciples to the garden of Gethsemane and prays to be delivered from his Passion, but most of all, to do the Father's will. Let us pray that Christ might hear the prayers of all who suffer from the culture of death, and that he might deliver them from the hands of their persecutors. Our Father... Holy Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows: hear the cries of innocent children taken from their mothers' wombs and pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death. Amen. Hail Mary, full of grace... Holy Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows: soothe the aching hearts of those afraid to welcome their child. Hail Mary, full of grace... Holy Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows: guide the heart of the frightened unwed mother who turns to you. Hail Mary, full of grace... Holy Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows: move the hearts of legislators to defend life from conception to natural death. Hail Mary, full of grace... Holy Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows: be with us when pain causes us to forget the inherent value of all human life. Hail Mary, full of grace... Holy Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows: pray for the children who have forgotten their elderly parents.

  • Celebrating Mary in the Month of August
Celebrating Mary in the month of August If asked to list Marian feast days in August, most Catholics would respond with only “the Assumption.” If asked what other Marian feast days are in August, most Catholics would go blank. That is probably because the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a holy day of obligation in the United States, and so our attention is drawn to it because we are required to go to Mass that day. But there are other feast days of Mary throughout the month that we don’t want to overlook. Special days honoring Mary have been part of Catholic Tradition since the end of the first century. Frescos of Mary both with and without Christ are found in the Roman catacombs. Since that time, devotion to Mary has grown to include holy days we customarily observe during the liturgical year. Marian feasts come under the doctrine of the Communion of Saints, in which we are called to honor those who have been raised up to perfection. Mary’s role is primary to that of the saints, and so the Church assigns feasts in her honor to emphasize her role in salvation history. The Marian feasts in August give us glimpses into the life of Mary and her role as Mother of God and Mediatrix of graces. There are many ways to commemorate Mary’s feasts — from attending Mass, to making a holy hour or just saying an extra Rosary. We may even want to celebrate with a special dinner or desert. Aug. 2 Our Lady of the Angels On this day we commemorate the dedication of the church of Portuincula (little portion of land), near Assisi, Italy.

  • Sacred Heart – Immaculate Heart”
FATHER MARK SCHULTE HOMILY Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time (B) June 13, 2021 “Sacred Heart – Immaculate Heart” In recent days, the Church has celebrated two very important Feast days, the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. We know that the heart is the seat of love. When you give someone your heart you give them your love, you give them the most intimate and sacred part of you. For Jesus, his greatest act of love was His passion and death for us. As He hung on the cross, the soldier’s lance pierced His side and into His heart and out flowed blood and water. The water to cleanse us of sin in baptism and His blood to nourish us sacramentally. For these and other reasons, the church and the faithful venerate the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is the very heart of God (CCC 478, 694, 1225) (Jn 19:34). Closely associated with the Sacred Heart of Jesus is the Immaculate Heart of His Mother Mary. The flesh of the heart of Jesus comes from her flesh. The suffering of Mary is intimately related to the suffering of Jesus. The prophecy of Simeon is fulfilled in her suffering. He said: “A sword will pierce your heart”. Her sword of suffering is her sorrow, in witnessing the suffering of her son Jesus. She contemplated from early on that the life of her son would consist in suffering for His people (Lk 2:22-39, 51). Mary united her intense suffering with the suffering of her Son Jesus.

  • Magnificat St. Mary the Virgin 2021 St. Andrew's Kelowna + + + May the Words of My Mouth and the Meditations of All Our Hearts
Magnificat St. Mary the Virgin 2021 St. Andrew’s Kelowna + + + May the words of my mouth and the meditations of all our hearts be acceptable in your sight O Lord, our strength and our redeemer. Amen. Today we celebrate St. Mary the Virgin. When you hear her name, what image comes to mind for you? Where does your image of Mary come from? Our image of Mary can be influenced by many things from art to music to nativity scenes. The Gospels tell us relatively very little about Mary yet since the first centuries of our faith she has been honoured as Theotokos, the God-bearer, who is the model for us as disciples who seek to say a free and full yes to Christ’s life within us. Her person and story has been influenced by many things throughout history and so will start with a brief look at the history of our Anglican tradition. During the 3rd century an anonymous Greek-speaking Christian wrote the Protoevangelium of James which included tales of Mary’s life before the angel came to her. This work, while fictitious, became deeply loved and theology began to grow around theses “folk-tales of the faithful”1 (to say nothing of the influence of the patriarchal culture on this theology). By the middle ages, eight Marian feast days were added to the Western Church calendar, devotion to Mary blurred the lines between honour and worship which is reserved for God alone, and the idea of Mary’s Immaculate Conception (making Mary incapable of sin) scandalized the Protestant Reformers and bitter arguments ensued.

  • The Devotion of the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The Devotion of the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary “God wills to establish in the world devotion to My Immaculate Heart.” Why Devotion to the Heart of Our Mother in Her Sorrows? Because Jesus wants this devotion. “Jesus Christ Himself revealed to Blessed Veronica of Binasco, that, He is more pleased in seeing His Mother compassionated than Himself.” He said to her: ‘My daughter, tears shed for My Passion are dear to Me; but as I loved My Mother Mary with an immense love, the meditation on the torments which She endured at My death is even more agreeable to Me.’ “Wherefore the graces promised by Jesus to those who are devoted to the dolors of Mary are very great.”1 Because Our Lady also wants it! Our Lady lamented to St. Bridget that very few consoled Her by meditating on Her Sorrows, and “that the greater part of the world lived in forgetfulness of them: ‘I look around at all who are on earth, to see if by chance there are any who pity Me, and meditate upon My Sorrows; and I find that there are very few. Therefore, My daughter, though I am forgotten by many, at least do you not forget Me; consider My anguish, and imitate, as far as you can, My grief.’”2 “For this purpose the Blessed Virgin Herself appeared in the year 1239 to the founder of the Order of the Servites, or servants of Mary, to ask them to institute a religious order in remembrance of Her sorrows.”3 It is a major Request of Heaven given at Fatima.

  • The Enthronement and Consecration the Enthronement Includes Necessarily Our Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
1 Introduction The following introduction to the practice of the Enthronement of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the home is compiled from excerpts of Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke’s book on the devotion, The Enthronement of the Sacred Heart of Jesus: The Center of Devotion to the Sacred Heart The center of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is the Enthronement of an image of the Sacred Heart in the home. The Enthroned image of the Sacred Heart, which may be a picture or a statue, expresses Christ’s true Kingship, daily reminding each member of the family to follow in His royal way by making reparation for sins committed and by striving to serve God and neighbor more lovingly. By the Enthronement of the Sacred Heart, we link the tabernacle of our parish church to our home, inviting Our Lord to be our constant and most intimate Companion. The Enthronement is a way of life. It means that Christ is King of our hearts, and that we desire Him to be present with us always. By the Enthronement, we signify our desire to make our hearts and our homes holy, to sanctify our lives in every aspect. The Enthronement and the Transformation of Society The practice of the Enthronement of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the home was begun by Father Mateo Crawley-Boevey, SS.CC (1875-1961), the great Apostle of the Enthronement… Father Crawley-Boevey insisted on the official and social recognition of the rule of the Sacred Heart of Jesus over the Christian Family.
