Brian My 2 sisters attended Magnificat High School in Rocky River, Ohio, the town where we grew up. That Catholic high school is named for the prayer that the Virgin Mary recited upon being praised by her cousin Elizabeth for having bee n chosen by God to become the Mother of the Messiah. The word “Magnificat” is the first word in her prayer, which begins (in Latin), Magnificat anima meaDominum . The literal English translation is “My souls magnifies the Lord.” The translation that we hear in the Responsorial Psalm (actually taken from St. Luke’s Gospel) this Sunday is, “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord.” What Mary is doing is redire cting the praise that Elizabeth had given to her. Mary instead wants all of the glory to go to God. Even though the pregnant Mary is overjoyed by the news that she was carrying within herself the Savior of the world, she wants all of the praise and glory t o go to God. What a contrast to so many of us who want others to glorify or praise us. Mary knows that God is the source of any glory accruing to her. What a lesson for us! Whatever natural gifts, talents, or abilities that we have, whatever material wea lth we have accumulated, whatever greatness there is in us, it all finds its origin in God. And, acknowledging that, we should strive to give glory to God for it all. I myself attended St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland. It is a Jesuit school and the Jesuits urged us to glorify God with our lives. The motto of the Jesuits is Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam , which is translated as, “For the greater glory of God.” We high school boys were taught that no matter what we did, whether it was academics, athletics, or extracurriculars, any of the glory we achieved should be directed back to God. That idea has stuck with me ever since, though admittedly I have not always practiced it very well. The Magnificat prayer of Mary is a reminder that to God belongs the glory. M ay our lives, like Mary’s, proclaim the greatness of the Lord, and as did Mary, may we rejoice in the Lord our Savior, for the Almighty has done great things for us! Advent Blessings, MONDAY, DECEMBER 14, 7:00 PM OUR LADY OF SORROWS CHURCH Please join us for our Advent Penance Service. We will have a communal penance service, followed by individual confessions. • USCCB Prayers a Rosary for Life: the Sorrowful Mysteries
USCCB Prayers A Rosary for Life: The Sorrowful Mysteries The following meditations on the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary are offered as a prayer for all life, from conception to natural death. The First Sorrowful Mystery The Agony in the Garden Prayer Intention: For all who are suffering from abandonment or neglect, that compassionate individuals will come forward to offer them comfort and aid. Jesus comes with his disciples to the garden of Gethsemane and prays to be delivered from his Passion, but most of all, to do the Father's will. Let us pray that Christ might hear the prayers of all who suffer from the culture of death, and that he might deliver them from the hands of their persecutors. Our Father... Holy Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows: hear the cries of innocent children taken from their mothers' wombs and pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death. Amen. Hail Mary, full of grace... Holy Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows: soothe the aching hearts of those afraid to welcome their child. Hail Mary, full of grace... Holy Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows: guide the heart of the frightened unwed mother who turns to you. Hail Mary, full of grace... Holy Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows: move the hearts of legislators to defend life from conception to natural death. Hail Mary, full of grace... Holy Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows: be with us when pain causes us to forget the inherent value of all human life. Hail Mary, full of grace... Holy Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows: pray for the children who have forgotten their elderly parents.

  • The Devotion of the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The Devotion of the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary “God wills to establish in the world devotion to My Immaculate Heart.” Why Devotion to the Heart of Our Mother in Her Sorrows? Because Jesus wants this devotion. “Jesus Christ Himself revealed to Blessed Veronica of Binasco, that, He is more pleased in seeing His Mother compassionated than Himself.” He said to her: ‘My daughter, tears shed for My Passion are dear to Me; but as I loved My Mother Mary with an immense love, the meditation on the torments which She endured at My death is even more agreeable to Me.’ “Wherefore the graces promised by Jesus to those who are devoted to the dolors of Mary are very great.”1 Because Our Lady also wants it! Our Lady lamented to St. Bridget that very few consoled Her by meditating on Her Sorrows, and “that the greater part of the world lived in forgetfulness of them: ‘I look around at all who are on earth, to see if by chance there are any who pity Me, and meditate upon My Sorrows; and I find that there are very few. Therefore, My daughter, though I am forgotten by many, at least do you not forget Me; consider My anguish, and imitate, as far as you can, My grief.’”2 “For this purpose the Blessed Virgin Herself appeared in the year 1239 to the founder of the Order of the Servites, or servants of Mary, to ask them to institute a religious order in remembrance of Her sorrows.”3 It is a major Request of Heaven given at Fatima.

  • Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows Th (Memorial September 15 )
Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows th (Memorial September 15 ) “And thy own soul a sword shall pierce, that, out of many hearts, thoughts may be revealed.” – Gospel of Luke 2:35 Our sojourn in this life is comprised of many joys and many sorrows. It is ultimately an encounter with the Cross and an opportunity to love the One who made us and calls us to share in a life of everlasting peace. Our path to the ‘Pearly Gates’ is effectively walked through the formation of the heart. We might ask ourselves, “What is the disposition of my heart?” The pathway to the heart is peppered with many tests of faith and challenges of charity. Will we allow the Holy Spirit to mould our hearts into true likenesses of Christ or will we give way to fear and mediocrity and so scurry away from the Light because it is too bright? Are we willing to pick up our Cross, or to stand by those who are suffering in their hour of need? As we seek a deeper understanding of the nature of God and of the unique relationship He desires with each one of us, we will, quite naturally, be drawn to him in the Sacraments. It is there that we encounter him in the most intimate way and allow Him to form our hearts and fill us with His supernatural strength, thereby deepening our capacity to love. To witness the suffering of a loved one is a heavy Cross and indeed requires special grace. Ah, if I could only take some of their pain away! If I could just take their place.

  • Theological Reflections on Marian Coredemption and the Work of the International Marian Association
Theological Reflections on Marian Coredemption and the Work of the International Marian Association By Robert Fastiggi, Ph.D. Professor of Systematic Theology, Sacred Heart Major Seminary, Detroit, Michigan USA. Introduction: Mary’s role in salvation history: her joint predestination with Christ. In his Jan. 1 2015 homily for the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, Pope Francis taught: The Blessed Virgin is the woman of faith who made room for God in her heart and in her plans; she is the believer capable of perceiving in the gift of her Son the coming of that “fullness of time” (Gal 4:4) in which God, by choosing the humble path of human existence, entered personally into the history of salvation. That is why Jesus cannot be understood without his Mother. In a homily given April 24, 1970 at the Marian shrine of Our Lady of Bonaria in Cagliari, Sardinia, Pope Paul VI remarked. “If we want to be Christian, we must also be Marian; that is we must recognize the essential, vital, providential bond which unites Our Lady with Jesus and which opens to us the way that leads us to him.” (AAS 62 ([970] 300-301]. In discussing the Catholic dogmas about Mary, we must always keep in mind this “providential bond” which links our Lord, Jesus, to his Mother. St. Paul, in Gal 4:4 writes that, “when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of woman, born under the law” (NAB). This means that a woman named Mary, the Mother of the Incarnate Word of God, is at the very center of salvation history.
