    Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows th (Memorial September 15 )​ ​ “And thy own soul a sword shall pierce, that, out of many hearts, thoughts may be revealed.” – Gospel of Luke 2:35 Our sojourn in this life is comprised of many joys and many sorrows. It is ultimately an encounter with the Cross and an opportunity to love the One who made us and calls us to share in a life of everlasting peace. Our path to the ‘Pearly Gates’ is effectively walked through the formation of the heart. We might ask ourselves, “What is ​ ​ ​ the disposition of my heart?” The pathway to the heart is peppered with many tests of ​ faith and challenges of charity. Will we allow the Holy Spirit to mould our hearts into true likenesses of Christ or will we give way to fear and mediocrity and so scurry away from the Light because it is too bright? Are we willing to pick up our Cross, or to stand by those who are suffering in their hour of need? As we seek a deeper understanding of the nature of God and of the unique relationship He desires with each one of us, we will, quite naturally, be drawn to him in the Sacraments. It is there that we encounter him in the most intimate way and allow Him to form our hearts and fill us with His supernatural strength, thereby deepening our capacity to love. To witness the suffering of a loved one is a heavy Cross and indeed requires special grace. Ah, if I could only take some of their pain away! If I could just take their ​ place.

Brian My 2 sisters attended Magnificat High School in Rocky River, Ohio, the town where we grew up. That Catholic high school is named for the prayer that the Virgin Mary recited upon being praised by her cousin Elizabeth for having bee n chosen by God to become the Mother of the Messiah. The word “Magnificat” is the first word in her prayer, which begins (in Latin), Magnificat anima meaDominum . The literal English translation is “My souls magnifies the Lord.” The translation that we hear in the Responsorial Psalm (actually taken from St. Luke’s Gospel) this Sunday is, “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord.” What Mary is doing is redire cting the praise that Elizabeth had given to her. Mary instead wants all of the glory to go to God.

Introduction: Mary’s role in salvation history: her joint predestination with Christ. In his Jan. 1 2015 homily for the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, Pope Francis taught: The Blessed Virgin is the woman of faith who made room for God in her heart and in her plans; she is the believer capable of perceiving in the gift of her Son the coming of that “fullness of time” (Gal 4:4) in which God, by choosing the humble path of human existence, entered personally into the history of salvation. That is why Jesus cannot be understood without his Mother. In a homily given April 24, 1970 at the Marian shrine of Our Lady of Bonaria in Cagliari, Sardinia, Pope Paul VI remarked. “If we want to be Christian, we must also be Marian; that is we must recognize the essential, vital, providential bond which unites Our Lady with Jesus and which opens to us the way that leads us to him.” (AAS 62 ([970] 300-301]. In discussing the Catholic dogmas about Mary, we must always keep in mind this “providential bond” which links our Lord, Jesus, to his Mother. St. Paul, in Gal 4:4 writes that, “when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of woman, born under the law” (NAB). This means that a woman named Mary, the Mother of the Incarnate Word of God, is at the very center of salvation history.
