    Pope elevates Ireland’s national Knock Shrine to international status DUBLIN (CNS) — Pope Francis has elevated the National Sanctuary of Our Lady of Knock to the status of an International Shrine of Eucharistic and Marian Devotion. In a message delivered from the Vatican via video link March 19, the feast of St. Joseph, Pope Francis described it as an “important moment in the life of the shrine” and “a great responsibility.” With all churches in Ireland closed to public worship under Level 5 COVID-19 restrictions, the pope’s message was relayed to an empty Apparition Chapel at Knock Shrine, where Mass was concelebrated by Archbishop Michael Neary of Tuam and Knock’s rector, Father Richard Gibbons. The Mass was livestreamed. Speaking in Italian, Pope Francis said the designation would mean always having “your arms wide open as a sign of welcome to every pilgrim who may arrive from any part of the world, asking nothing in return but only recognizing him as a brother or a sister who desires to share the same experience of fraternal prayer.” Paying tribute to the Irish faithful he said: “You have been a missionary people. We cannot forget how many priests left their homeland in order to become missionaries of the Gospel. Nor can we forget the many lay people who immigrated to faraway lands but still kept their devotion to Our Lady.” The apparition in Knock occurred Aug. 21, 1879, when Mary, St. Joseph and St. John the Evangelist appeared at the south gable of the Knock parish church. The silent apparition was witnessed by 15 people, ranging from young children to the elderly.

    A haven of peace and tranquility adjacent to Knock Shrine Knock Shrine ...the destination of millions Knock Shrine is an international place of prayer and pilgrimage where over one and a half million people visit every year. The story of Knock began in August 1879 when fifteen people from Knock village witnessed an Apparition at the gable wall of the Parish Church. Places o f pilgrimage, statues, and pilgrimages are all means which the Church and popular piety offer us so that, with their help, we can deepen our own personal spiritual lives our prayer and union with God and the saints, and make our daily Christian witness fruitful. Fatima (like some other great Marian shrines) is made more holy by the apparitions o f God’s Mother, through which she herself chose this place for her sanctuary. Here she is especially dose to the desires and needs of people, and approaches God’s throne with her power­ ful intercession on behalf of all those who turn to her in a faithfilled and trusting visit to this special place o f graces. At the same time Mary addresses her “ Message of Fatima” to all pilgrims, her urgent invitation to penance and conversion, and to ceaseless prayer for the conversion of sinners and the world, which today more than ever is in need of God’s mercy and forgiveness. Do not let this pilgrimage to Fatima be a passing event, which ends with your return home. Rather, make this pilgrimage a new beginning fo r your spiritual life. Continue what you began again in Fatima in your per­ sonal, family, and social life.     Vatican official: Church must be prudent judging Medjugorje apparitions KNOCK, Ireland (CNS) — Medjugorje, Bosnia-Herzegovina, is a place of prayer, conversion and pilgrimage for millions of people, but the church must be prudent and not rush to any judgment on the alleged Marian apparitions there, said Archbishop Rino Fisichella, president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting New Evangelization. Speaking to Catholic News Service at Knock Shrine in County Mayo Aug. 15, the feast of the Assumption, Archbishop Fisichella spoke of attending the first officially approved church festival at Medjugorje in early August. “I confess the experience was very beautiful, seeing about 70,000 young people praying and living together and listening to catechesis,” he told CNS, describing it as a mini-World Youth Day. The presence of so many young people there was, he suggested, “one of the fruits” of the pastoral efforts of Medjugorje. Visionaries claim to have seen than 40,000 Marian apparitions since June 1981, when six teenagers first claimed they first saw an apparition of Our Lady while herding sheep. As always, when confronted with an apparition, the church “is always prudent,” Archbishop Fisichella said. In May 2018, Pope Francis named Polish Archbishop Henryk Hoser as apostolic visitor to the shrine, after a papal commission recommended that Medjugorje, which attracts up to 3 million visitors annually, be designated a pontifical shrine with Vatican oversight. A ban on pilgrimages organized by dioceses and parishes was then lifted by papal decree. Some of the six visionaries say Mary still appears to them daily and gives them messages. However, in 2017, when asked about this, Pope Francis appeared to doubt the ongoing nature of these apparitions.

From the beginnings of human history, people have designated particular locations as sacred and traveled to them in a pilgrimage. When Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire in 314 CE, Christian shrines emerged very soon at martyrs’ tombs and other places of historical importance in development of this religion. The distribution of physical relics created many of the Christian shrines in Western Europe. Popular belief concerning Mary began to evolve upon Jesus’ death; and in turn, most of these beliefs were adopted into Roman Catholic doctrine and became Mariology or Marianism, the veneration of Mary. In Western Europe, a number of shrines were created from an apparition of Mary to local people, and with any shrine’s approval by the institutional Church, it gained an international reputation and following; shrines not granted this approval by the Church have remained less internationally well-known and mostly locally based.
