It is encouraging to consider the possibility that this little endeavor might encourage others to come to know more fully Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and his Mother. I also express my gratitude to the faculty and staff at the International Marian Research Institute. I am grateful for the many ways that the Blessed Mother has worked through all of you and for the many wonderful people I have met. Your love of Mary is a powerful witness and leaves an indelible impression in me. I wish to thank the Misioneras Eucarísticas de Nazaret for their support and willingness to help me obtain all the materials I needed, especially Sister Mónica M. Yuan Cordiviola. He served as bishop of Málaga from 1915 – 1935 and subsequently as bishop of Palencia from 1935 – 1940.6 He was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2001 and canonized by Pope Francis in 2016.7 Saint Manuel was born on February 25, 1877 in Seville, Spain. His parents, Martín González Lara and Antonia García Pérez were natives of Antequera, born in 1838 and 1841 respectively. His father worked as a carpenter and his mother was a homemaker. In order to help the family financially she also did some sewing work on the side. In search of a better economic situation, they emigrated from Antequera to Seville where the father, Martín, found work at a Salesian school. After two short years he was able to open his own carpentry and cabinet-making shop. Five children were born to them. Unfortunately, their first- born son died at a young age. They named their second son Francisco and they named their third son Martín which was the same name they had given their first son who died.

  • The Morality of Magisterium 87
The Morality of Magisterium 87 The Morality of Magisterium by Gerard Mannion Magisterium is a moral issue. To state such is not to re-emphasise that teaching authority can and should pertain to morality. Rather, that the relationship perceived from the other way around equally applies. An enormous amount of literature has already been written in relation to how magisterium relates to moral dilemmas as well as teachings and wider guidance for ethical discernment. But something which has been frequently overlooked in the history of the church and particularly so in recent times is that the way in which magisterium is understood and the manner in which it is exercised have moral implications themselves. Therefore, all due ethical consideration should be given to how magisterium is perceived and shaped long before it is exercised. One of the purposes of this paper is to try and remind ourselves of this and of the implications that follow from such a reminder. It also seeks to encourage moral theologians, ecclesiologists, canon law- yers and church leaders alike to keep this simple observation in mind. 1. How and why magisterium is a moral issue Magisterium is a moral issue. To state such is not to re-emphasise that teaching authority can and should pertain to morality. • Chapter 14 Discernment of Spirits
Chapter 14 Discernment of Spirits It is indispensable for the direction of souls and for the study of extraordinary mystical phenomena to be able to distinguish the various spirits under which an individual may act or be acted upon. As used here, the word spirit refers to two different types of motivating factors or powers. The spirit of an individual refers to the internal inclination to good or evil, and it manifests itself with such regularity that it must be considered a personal trait. Thus, if a person has a propensity to prayer, he or she is said to possess the spirit of prayer; if there is a tendency to arguments and altercations, he or she is said to possess a spirit of contradiction, etc. Understood in this sense, the spirit of a person is usually the result of both temperament and character. But it is also possible for an individual to come under the influence of a spirit that is extrinsic to the personality, whether from God or the devil. For that reason it is the function of the discernment of spirits to judge whether a given act or repetition of acts flows from the spirit of God, the diabolical spirit, or the spirit of the individual. There are two types of discernment of spirit: acquired and infused. Acquired discernment of spirits is complementary to ordinary spiritual direction and can be cultivated by all who use the proper means. Infused discernment of spirits is a charismatic gift or gratia gratis data, which is granted by God to certain individuals.

  • The Holy See
The Holy See POPE JOHN PAUL II GENERAL AUDIENCE Wednesday, 5 November 1997 We can count on Mary’s intercession 1. Down the centuries Marian devotion has enjoyed an interrupted development. In addition to the traditional liturgical feasts dedicated to the Lord’s Mother, there has been a flowering of countless expressions of piety, often approved and encouraged by the Church’s Magisterium. Many Marian devotions and prayers are an extension of the liturgy itself and have sometimes contributed to its overall enrichment, as is the case with the Office in honour of the Blessed Virgin and other pious compositions which have become part of the Breviary. The first known Marian invocation goes back to the third century and begins with the words: "We fly to thy patronage (Sub tuum praesidium), O holy Mother of God...". However, since the 14th century the most common prayer among Christians has been the "Hail Mary". By repeating the first words the angel addressed to Mary, it leads the faithful to contemplate the mystery of the Incarnation. The Latin word "Ave" translates the Greek word "Chaire": it is an invitation to joy and could be translated "Rejoice". The Eastern hymn "Akathistos" repeatedly stresses this "rejoice". In the "Hail Mary" the Blessed Virgin is called "full of grace" and is thus recognized for the perfection and beauty of her soul. The phrase "The Lord is with thee" reveals God’s special personal relationship with Mary, which fits into the great plan for his covenant with all humanity. Next, the statement "Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus" expresses the fulfilment of the divine plan in the Daughter of Zion’s virginal body.

' I IT IS not by mer.e chance that Christ and His Motper have been so intimately associated in the work of man's redemption and sanctification. Rather it is all according· to the clost wise plan of God. Already in prophecy we see the two mo~t closely an uniquely associated. As Pope Pius X stated in his Ehcyclical I Letter Ad diem illum: ".' .· . almost every time that the Scrip- tures prophesy of 'the grace that was to appear among1 us' (Cf. Titus 2, 11), the Redeemer of mankind is associated jwith His Mother. The Lamb, the Ruler of the earth, will be sent-but I · from the rock of the desert; the flower will blossom but from the root of Jesse." 1 Hence where grace is concerned,1 when revelation announces something about the God-man,~ it does not overlook the Mother of the God-man.

  • The Role of Mary in the Work of Redemption: Seven Key Moments
The Role of Mary in the Work of Redemption: Seven Key Moments R O B E R T F ASTIGGI , P H .D. Professor of Systematic Theology , Sacred Heart Major Seminary Introduction The role of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the economy of salvation is rooted in the mystery of the Incarnation. God chose to unite creation to himself by becom- ing incarnate ex Maria virgine.1 The eternal plan for the created cosmos, therefore, includes the Blessed Mother. The role of Mary in the economy of salvation is, therefore, not something marginal but central. In fact, the Blessed Virgin Mary is part of God’s plan from all eternity. The theology of Marian co-redemption un- folds in seven key moments: 1) Mary’s predestination as the Co-redemptrix; 2) Mary’s Immaculate Conception; 3) Mary’s free consent to be the Mother of the Word Incarnate at the Annunciation; 4) Mary’s union with her Son “in the work of salvation” from “the time of Christ’s virginal conception up to His death”;2 5) Mary’s union with Christ’s passion and her offering of her crucified Son to the Fa- ther; 6) Mary’s glorious assumption body and soul into heaven; 7) Mary’s ongoing maternal mediation of the grace with and under Christ, the one Mediator. Each of these moments deserves individual attention, but all of them combine to illuminate Mary’s essential role in the work of redemption. 1. Mary’s predestination as Mother of the Redeemer and Co- redemptrix Mary was predestined to be the Mother of the Incarnate Word.
