A Rahnerian Reading of Sensus Fidei in the Life of the Church Michael M. Canaris, Loyola University Chicago The aim of this piece is to analyze the International Theological Commission’s 2014 document Sensus Fidei in the Life of the Church through a Rahnerian lens. Thus, while I am sure that most readers are familiar with the text, I think it appropriate to give a just very brief introduction to the document itself, before moving into the agenda proper. The 2014 text obviously sought to address theological issues involved in the understanding of the sensus fidelium which have arisen since its explicit phrasing in the council’s writings. There has been little change to the Commission which produced this text, and that which wrote the 2012 document entitled Theology Today: Perspectives, Principles, and Criteria. The subcommittee listed as drafting both is in fact exactly the same, made up mostly of clerics, but also including one woman, Sara Butler, and one lay man, Thomas Söding. The texts were, however, authorized by two different Prefects of the CDF – Cardinal William Levada for the former, and Cardinal Gerhard Müller for the latter. As of this writing, the official translations produced by the Vatican for the 2012 text are available in quite a few more languages than its later counterpart, including Chinese, Hungarian, Polish, Korean, and Lithuanian. The general structure of the relevant text at hand includes an introduction, four thematic chapters with a number of subsections in each, and a conclusion. The chapters contain reflections on the sensus fidei in terms of (1) Scripture and Tradition, (2) the personal life of the believer, (3) the life of the Church, and (4) the need to develop strategies for discerning authentic manifestations of such a sensus. -

Carmelite echoes in the Lourdes Grotto Johan Bergström-Allen When the editor of Carmel in the World asked me to write an article about the link between Carmelite spirituality and Lourdes, the famous shrine of Our Lady in south-western France, I was very happy to do so because it’s a tremendously important place in my life. I’ve been lucky enough to have gone there on pilgrimage many times, including several visits in the Jubilee Year of 2008 which marks the 150th anniversary of Mary’s apparitions to Saint Bernadette Soubirous. But before I can tell you why I think there’s a strong link between the message of Lourdes and Carmelite spirituality, there’s something I feel I have to say first: I am not a big fan of apparitions generally. There, I feel better for writing that! Let me explain… When I was a teenager (all of a decade ago), I used to be very attracted by the extraordinary (even spooky) parts of our Catholic faith. Visions, weeping statues, saints who could reveal your past and your future, stigmata, Eucharistic miracles and so on – I was fascinated by it all. And when I first came to Lourdes aged thirteen I discovered all sorts of out-of-the-ordinary things to excite me: a vision story, miraculous healings, ‘holy’ water, and enough glow-in-the-dark crucifixes and tacky religious art to fill the town’s three basilicas and numerous chapels. There’s nothing wrong with piety, of course, but it needs to be balanced and sensible. -

Numismatic Evidence of the Jewish Origins of the Cross T. B. Cartwright December 5, 2014 Introduction Anticipation for the Jewish Messiah’s first prophesied arrival was great and widespread. Both Jewish and Samaritan populations throughout the known world were watching because of the timeframe given in Daniel 9. These verses, simply stated, proclaim that the Messiah’s ministry would begin about 483 years from the decree to rebuild Jerusalem in 445BC. So, beginning about 150 BC, temple scribes began placing the Hebrew tav in the margins of scrolls to indicate those verses related to the “Messiah” or to the “Last Days.” The meaning of the letter tav is “sign,” “symbol,” “promise,” or “covenant.” Shortly after 150 BC, the tav (both + and X forms) began showing up on coins throughout the Diaspora -- ending with a flurry of the use of the symbol at the time of the Messiah’s birth. The Samaritans, in an effort to remain independent of the Jewish community, utilized a different symbol for the anticipation of their Messiah or Tahib. Their choice was the tau-rho monogram, , which pictorially showed a suffering Tahib on a cross. Since the Northern Kingdom was dispersed in 725 BC, there was no central government authority to direct the use of the symbol. So, they depended on the Diaspora and nations where they were located to place the symbol on coins. The use of this symbol began in Armenia in 76 BC and continued through Yeshua’s ministry and on into the early Christian scriptures as a nomina sacra. As a result, the symbols ( +, X and ) were the “original” signs of the Messiah prophesied throughout scriptures. -

Christ Jesus -- "Mediator and Fullness of All Revelation" 25 God has said everything in his Word 65 "In many and various ways God spoke of old to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son." 26 Christ, the Son of God made man, is the Father's one, perfect and unsurpassable Word. In him he has said everything; there will be no other word than this one. St. John of the Cross, among others, commented strikingly on Hebrews 1:1-2: In giving us his Son, his only Word (for he possesses no other), he spoke everything to us at once in this sole Word - and he has no more to say. because what he spoke before to the prophets in parts, he has now spoken all at once by giving us the All Who is His Son. Any person questioning God or desiring some vision or revelation would be guilty not only of foolish behaviour but also of offending him, by not fixing his eyes entirely upon Christ and by living with the desire for some other novelty. 27 There will be no further Revelation 66 "The Christian economy, therefore, since it is the new and definitive Covenant, will never pass away; and no new public revelation is to be expected before the glorious manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ." 28 Yet even if Revelation is already complete, it has not been made completely explicit; it remains for Christian faith gradually to grasp its full significance over the course of the centuries. -

PRAYERS OF REPARATION An Act of Reparation to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament Pope Pius VII granted an indulgence to everyone who, with contrition for his sins and with devotion, says the following Act of Reparation to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament Jesus, my God, my Saviour, true God and true Man, with that most profound homage with which the faith itself inspires me, I adore and love Thee with my whole heart, enclosed in the most august Sacrament of the Altar, in reparation for all the acts of irreverence, profanation, and sacrilege, which I may ever have been so unhappy as to have committed, as well as for all such like acts that ever have been done, or which may be done, though God forbid they should be, in ages yet to come. I adore Thee, therefore, my God, not indeed as Thou deservest, nor as much as I am bound to adore, but as far as I am able; and I would that I could adore Thee with all the perfection of which all reasonable persons are capable. Meantime I purpose now and ever to adore Thee, not only for those Catholics who adore Thee not, and love Thee not, but also in the stead of, and for the conversion of all heretics, schismatics, impious atheists, blasphemers, impostors, Mahometans, Jews, and idolaters.
