(304) 522-2031 A Parish of Wheeling-Charleston Corpus Christi The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, histori- cally known by its Latin name, Corpus Christi, celebrates the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist—Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. The feast dates to the Middle Ages and originated with a visionary nun and a Eucharistic miracle. Announce the Good News of Jesus THE STORY In 1263 a German priest stopped in Bolsena, Italy to celebrate Mass Readings for the Week of June 6, 2021 at the Church of St. Christina during his pilgrimage to Rome. At the time he was having doubts about Jesus being truly present in the Sunday Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ Blessed Sacrament. He was affected by the growing debate among (Corpus Christi) certain theologians who, for the first time in the history of the Ex 24:3-8; Ps 116:12-13, 15-16, 17-18; Heb 9:11-15; Church, began introducing doubts about the Body and Blood of Christ being actually present in the consecrated bread and wine. In Mk 14:12-16, 22-26 response to his doubt, when he recited the prayer of consecration as he celebrated the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, blood started seeping Monday 2 Cor 1:1-17; Ps 34:2-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9; Mt 5:1-12 from the consecrated host and onto the altar and corporal. Tuesday 2 Cor 1:18-22; Ps 119:129, 130, 131, 132, 133, The priest reported this miracle to Pope Urban IV, who sent dele- 135; Mt 5:13-16 gates to investigate and ordered that host and blood-stained corporal be brought to Orvieto. The relics were then placed in the Cathedral Wednesday Saint Ephrem, Deacon and Doctor of the Church of Orvieto, where they remain today. 2 Cor 3:4-11; Ps 99:5, 6, 7, 8, 9; Mt 5:17-19 This Eucharistic Miracle confirmed the visions given to St. Juliana, a nun and mystic who had a series of visions in which she was in- Thursday 2 Cor 3:15—4:1, 3-6; Ps 85:9ab and 10, 11-12, structed by Our Lord to work to establish a liturgical feast for the 13-14; Mt 5:20-26 Holy Eucharist, to which she had a great devotion. After many years of trying, she finally convinced the bishop, the Friday Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus future Pope Urban IV, to create this special feast in honor of the Hos 11:1, 3-4, 8c-9; Is 12:2-3, 4, 5-6 (3); Eph 3:8-12, Blessed Sacrament, where none had existed before. Soon after her 14-19; Jn 19:31-37 death, Pope Urban instituted Corpus Christi for the Universal Church and celebrated it for the first time in Orvieto in 1264, a year after the Saturday Memorial of the Immaculate Heart of the Eucharistic Miracle in Bolsena. Hopefully, no one was that obvious at treating wealthy members better than poor ones. Sadly, prejudice is a sin that is just as prevalent today as it was 2000 years ago. Today we have laws for business and government to prevent prejudice. But the subtler forms of judging people by their race, clothing, speech, religion, etc. sometimes hide behind patriotism, faith, or the desire to protect our families. So how can we stop it? One reason for prejudice is ignorance. Some people will believe anything they hear or read, especially if they see it on the internet. When you get an e-mail that says "true Americans" are white, English-speaking Chris- tians, there is probably some prejudice behind it. The only way to fight ignorance is with the truth. Jesus himself said the truth will set you free. (Jn 8:32) He ignored the laws/traditions that said you cannot associate with unclean people, Gentiles, or sinners.

CHRIS BECERRA Welcome and congratulate The Feast of Corpus Christi is celebrated to honor the Lord’s presence in the Blessed Sacrament. There were 2 separate miracles that lead to the institution of the feast in the Catholic Church: The Vision of St. Juliana of Cornillon St. Juliana had a great devotion to the Blessed Sacrament from her youth and longed for a special feast to celebrate devotion to Our Lord’s Presence in the Blessed Sacrament. The saint had a vision of the Church under the appearance of a full moon which had one dark spot. During the vision, she heard a mysterious, heavenly voice explain that the moon represented the Church at that time, and the dark spot FIRST HOLY COMMUNION symbolized the fact that a great feast in honor of the Blessed ST. JOSEPH PARISH Sacrament was missing from the liturgical calendar. St. Juliana confessed the vision to Bishop Robert de Thorete, SUNDAY, JUNE 6, 2021 then Bishop of Liège, and Jacques Pantaléon, who later became Pope Urban IV. Bishop Robert was favorably impressed and called a synod in 1246 which authorized the Monserrat Caratachea celebration of a feast dedicated to Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament – Corpus Christi – to be held in the diocese in the Briella Renee Cardenas following year.     PRAYERS OF REPARATION An Act of Reparation to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament Pope Pius VII granted an indulgence to everyone who, with contrition for his sins and with devotion, says the following Act of Reparation to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament Jesus, my God, my Saviour, true God and true Man, with that most profound homage with which the faith itself inspires me, I adore and love Thee with my whole heart, enclosed in the most august Sacrament of the Altar, in reparation for all the acts of irreverence, profanation, and sacrilege, which I may ever have been so unhappy as to have committed, as well as for all such like acts that ever have been done, or which may be done, though God forbid they should be, in ages yet to come. I adore Thee, therefore, my God, not indeed as Thou deservest, nor as much as I am bound to adore, but as far as I am able; and I would that I could adore Thee with all the perfection of which all reasonable persons are capable.
