How to get to Viterbo

By plane Leonardo da Vinci - in Rome - is the closest international airport, just over 60 miles away from the city center and it is served by all the major airline companies. You can rent a car from one of the nine car rentals available in the airport. Driving to Viterbo will take you about 1:20 h, depending on traffic conditions. Another option is to catch the Leonardo Express – the fast train running every 15 minutes that will get you to Rome Termini station in just over 30 minutes – and then plan your train journey from Rome Termini. By train You can catch a train and reach one of the two train stations in town: Porta Fiorentina and Porta Romana. The journey to each of them with a regional train is indirect via Roma Trastevere station, it takes about 2:20h and tickets cost € 11,00 one way. The two train stations in town are not that far away from each other and the cost of the ticket is exactly the same for both so you can just select the one closest to your hotel/accommodation. If you are coming to Viterbo from another Italian city, the train is the most suitable means of transport. The smartest thing to do is to get to Orte station if you are coming from the North of Italy and get to Rome Termini station if you are coming from the South. In both stations there are local trains leaving for Viterbo, besides in Orte you will also find a coach service. By car Viterbo is just off the A1 (part of the European road E35), the main motorway that connects the North and the South of Italy, crossing our peninsula from Milan to Rome. The nearest exit is Orte, which is 19 miles away from Viterbo’s city center. Once you have passed Orte’s barrier (the A roads in Italy are toll ones), take the SS675 (toll free) and follow the signs to Viterbo. Please remember to check with your hotel if they have parking facilities as most of the parking spaces in town (especially the ones in the medieval center) are not free and usually get very busy during the day.
