St John’s Church. Fron

Rev Esther officiated at our Eucharist Service at Fron on Sunday 28th October. The offertory was taken up by Louise and the organist was James Kelly, aged 8. It was a pleasure to have another organist taking part in the service and we thank James for playing for us. Long may it continue.

If there are any organ, keyboard or piano players who would like to come and join us at any of our services at the Fron, Berriew or Pantyffridd we would be delighted to welcome you.

Our Remembrance Service on Sunday 11th November was led by Peter Watkin. The names of the fallen were read out by Helen B and as each name was read out one of our young people, Louise, Finlay or James placed a poppy in a display at the chancel steps. Millie-Grace played the Last Post and Reveille and Helen gave the Exhortation. We thank Peter for making our service a fitting reminder and our thanks for the sacrifice made by all those who gave their lives that we can live in freedom. May we pray never to forget them and always to use that freedom wisely.

NATIONAL GARDEN SCHEME LOCAL GARDENS OPEN FOR CHARITY

2018 is coming to an end and it was another great year for the National Garden Scheme in . The figures are not finalised yet, but we can safely say we raised over £35,000 for charity. Thank you for visiting our gardens and eating our cake!

Did you know that the National Garden Scheme has donated £180,000 to Horatio’s Garden since 2015? Horatio’s Garden is a national charity that creates and cares for stunning gardens in NHS spinal injury centres. Their fourth garden will be right on our doorstep at the Robert Jones and Agnus Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (Gobowen to you and me). This garden, designed by Bunny Guinness, is due to open in May 2019. Visiting gardens is not the only way you can support the NGS. As you do your Christmas shopping online, buying through “AmazonSmile” or “Give as you Live” and selecting the National Garden Scheme as your chosen charity will help raise even more funds for our charities. You can also buy gifts and Christmas cards from the NGS online shop at www.ngs.org.uk/shop/

You can discover more about our gardens and the charities supported by the National Garden Scheme at www.ngs.org.uk . Keep up to date by following us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter @powysngs.

The Powys NGS team wish you all a very Happy Christmas and look forward to welcoming you to our fabulous gardens again in 2019. Helen Anthony, Publicity Officer, 01686 941795 [email protected]

Berriew W.I. November Meeting Berriew W.I.’s Annual General Meeting and regular meeting took place in the Bowling Club on 7th November.

Annual Reports were read out by Ferol and Sue, and were adopted. Membership had risen from 26 to 27 members. The sad death of Daphne Burton was recalled, as was the fact that had been a very enthusiastic member of the W.I. Debbie Carter had been welcomed during the year as a new member, and on this occasion she was presented with some flowers and a card, to congratulate her on her recent engagement.

President Sue Usmar addressed the meeting, confirming that she would be stepping down from the role, having held it for five years. Sue was thanked by Vice-President Ann Dixon for her outstanding commitment as President over such a lengthy period.

After some deliberation the committee for the next year was elected, with Catriona Heeraman as President and Lisa Cakebread as Vice-President; the meeting wished them well. An exciting programme of events and speakers was announced for next year, and refreshments were served during the break, including delicious brownies baked by Jo Carrick.

The meeting discussed the venue once again, and Jan suggested that Berriew Community Council be approached, in regard to improved lighting. Darts and dominoes matches would be starting over the next few weeks. The Lion Hotel was confirmed as the venue for the Christmas meal on December 5th and it would hopefully be an evening of good cheer and merriment.

BERRIEW ROYAL BRITISH LEGION POPPY APPEAL FUND 2018.

On behalf of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal Fund I would like to congratulate our own Berriew Poppy organisers Valerie and Barry along with their excellent band of devoted volunteer helpers who go out year after year irrespective of the weather conditions to take their poppy trays and boxes from door to door to sell and collect this much needed contribution to the National Poppy Appeal Fund. It is not like the town collections where they stand on the street or warm supermarket entrances and shake and hold out a tin for people to drop their coins into. No, they have to go out into those remote country areas. Our dedicated poppy sellers must travel for many miles from one house or farm to another, then perhaps nobody at home when they arrive there or I’m sorry I had mine from Welshpool or Newtown, whilst others will say we were expecting you. We must also give a big thank you to all those people who contribute most generously year after year to this most deserving cause by putting their money in the poppy collection boxes, not forgetting the excellent contributions made by our local public houses, shops and all the other local organisations within the Berriew collecting area amounting to the total of £3192.66, this along with the lovely coffee morning held in Berriew Bowling Club, organised by Sue Rees, which added a further £341.15, giving us a grand total of £3533.81 for The Berriew Royal British Legion 2018 Poppy Appeal Fund. Many thanks for your wonderful contributions, tremendous effort and response shown by all and many thanks once again to our wonderful, excellent Poppy Organisers and dedicated collectors. I would also like to thank those people who year by year erect and lay out the Field of Remembrance on the grass area near the Lychgate for the placing of the little wooden crosses in memory of their loved ones.

THANK YOU EVERYONE. J. Ellis M.B.E.

Berriew Mothers’ Union

Iris welcomed everyone to the October meeting and led a short devotional service. The arrangements for the Advent lunch at Lakeside are well in hand and transport will be provided for needy members and guests.

The Mothers’ Union Mission Area Carol Service is to be hosted by Berriew Mothers’ Union and will be held on Tuesday 4th December at 2p.m. in St. Beuno’s Church. Everyone is very welcome to come to this service.

Unfortunately the speaker was unable to come to the meeting so Joyce Harrison gallantly stepped into the role, and she had a most exciting tale to tell! She began her story by telling us about the Presbyterian revivalist preacher, Howell Harris, who came from Trefecca. He toured the countryside converting and preaching to the many scattered communities in the area. On his travels, at Tyddyn, he met the Bowen family who became great friends and supporters, and eventually two daughters of the house followed him to Trefecca to join the community there. The younger daughter kept a wonderful diary of her life at Trefecca and Joyce read this out so everyone enjoyed a detailed account of life at Trefecca in the mid 18th century. It was a very interesting enjoyable talk which we all found most fascinating.

Iris told the meeting the sad news that this was to be the last Berriew Mothers’ Union as numbers have dwindled and no young replacements were joining the group. Everyone felt very sad about this news as Mothers’ Union had been part of Berriew life for 80 years or more. Perhaps in the future there could be a revival.

Best wishes to everyone and Happy Christmas! Ann Dixon.

Montgomery Canal Film Release

After months of filming on the Montgomery Canal, Canal and River Trust are delighted to release “Life on the Monty”, a short film that celebrates the heritage, wildlife and people who make this beautiful canal so special. The film also includes archive footage of the original restoration from 1969, to celebrate the role of volunteers in its resurrection, and a chance to see The Prince of Wales re-opening the canal at Welshpool. Sylvia Edwards, Montgomery Canal Community Development Officer, says “The making of the film brought together various generations who wanted to tell the wider world how special this canal is: its unique environment, the amazing work done by past and current volunteers, the fun that it provides to young people and their families, and how everyone can enjoy its beautiful and peaceful surroundings.” “Watch the Life on the Monty trailer at https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/montgomery , where you will also find a link to the film itself. Feel free to click on the heart-shape button, top right handside, to “ like it”, and don’t forget to share it with your networks.”

“Life on the Monty” is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund as part of the restoration of the Montgomery canal in Shropshire.

Pantyffridd Thursday 15th November

I would like to express my thanks to the lady in the blue car who stopped on the above date to help me when our beautiful ginger and white cat had been killed on the road. This lady came to my aid in trying to pick him up. In the confusion I can’t even remember thanking you, so I hope you are a local person and read this – thank you so much. I would also like to thank the 2 or 3 cars who in slowing down just past our house, alerted me to the fact that something was wrong, and when I walked down the drive to the road I found what had happened. These cars must have driven around him after seeing him lying there. It was some comfort to us to know that after he was killed nobody else drove over him. So thank you all. Can I just add although you cannot avoid killing a cat or a dog if they run out, please remember that it is most probably somebodys loved pet and if you are able please move them to the side of the road to avoid further heartache. Val Wallis.

The Worst Angler

Thomas Birch, the eighteenth century scholar, was a keen fisherman. However, he rarely caught anything and so decided to disguise himself in order to lull the fish into a false sense of security. He constructed an outfit which made him look like a tree. His arms fitted into the branches and his eyes peered through knots in the bark. Thus attired, he set off down the riverbank and took up his position. He still did not catch anything, attracting only suspicious dogs and friends who used to picnic at his feet. Taken from- The Book of Heroic Failures.

The Least Successful Weather Report

After severe flooding in Jeddah in January 1979, the Arab News gave the following bulletin: ‘We regret we are unable to give you the weather. We rely on weather reports from the airport, which is closed because of the weather. Whether we are able to give you the weather tomorrow depends on the weather’ Taken from- The Book of Heroic Failures.

Editor’s Postscript

The closing date for the February 2019 newsletter is Wednesday 16th January and it will be published on Friday 25th January. Please remember we do not print a Newsletter for the month of January.

Also thank you to the many people who send in articles and information to be published.

I personally would like to express my sincere thanks to Clare Evans who has patiently spent hours with me over the last 12 months or so helping me to produce the Newsletter file as we changed on to the new printer and more recently a new laptop with new operating systems. Clare – I couldn’t have done it without your help!! – I’ll still be emailing you shouting ‘help’ now and again, no doubt.

Lastly, I would like to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and New Year.
