Currently in private ownership, Brecon Castle was built in around 1093. The confluence of the Usk and Honddu 5 | P a g e made this an ideal location for its construction. The ruins can be seen and partially visited by using the Castle Hotel. Church and Chapel Name Description Comment Brecon Cathedral Originally art of a large priory complex built in 1093, the cathedral includes the regimental chapel of the SWB, whose regimental museum is also in Brecon. Also on the site is the cathedral heritage centre in a converted tithe barn. St. Mary’s Church Parish Church of Brecon with a very fine tower built in 1521. http://www.stmarysbrecon.org.uk/ St. Davids Church St David's church lies in a western suburb of Brecon, less than 1km from the town centre. The Llanfaes church itself is a mixture of Victorian and earlier C20th build and retains virtually nothing of its pre-C19th predecessor, the only medieval being a font. The churchyard is rectilinear. The building dates entirely to 1859 and 1923-25, and there is no evidence of re-used materials. Brecon Friary (St Complex site with a complex history, which is now Christ College Brecon a public school. Nicholas), Chapel Several priory buildings survive and others have been incorporated into later phase and the school itself. Not really accessible but there are open days and opportunities for limited public access. The earliest architecture in the chapel is datable to c. 1240. The Awbrey family of Abercynrig are thought to have been the benefactors in the C14. The first mention is in the western visitation of the Dominicans in England, of 1269. The choir of the friary church, its roofless nave, the C14 refectory and an adjoining building survive, and that so much has done 6 | P a g e so is due to their having been granted after the Dissolution to William Barlow, Bishop of St Davids. He transferred the College of Abergwili to the site in 1541 ; the College of Christ Church trained clergy here till the opening of St David's College at Lampeter attracted men there. The college became a public school in 1853. More important perhaps even than J. P. Seddon's excellent restoration of the chapel in 1859 are the Gothic Revival school buildings of 1861-4 and after by John Prichard and Seddon, the architects to Llandaff diocese. Capel y Plough The Plough (Capel y Plough, United Reform Church) is a historic chapel, dating back to the 17th century and takes its name from an old public house which used to stand on the site. The present building was constructed in 1840 but the building’s was enlarged and re-ordering in the 1880s. It is a Grade II* listed building with a plain exterior and fine decorative interior. Used as a venue by Brecon Jazz. http://brecon.urc.org.uk/churches/brecon/ Watergate Welsh Watergate Welsh Baptist Church was first built in 1806 and rebuilt in 1833, possibly to the Baptist Chapel design of Reverend. William Lewis of Aberdare. Further rebuilding took place in 1880, together with a new vestry and schoolroom. The church is built in the Sub-Classical, gable entry type, occupying a town centre position by the River Honddu. Listed building Presbyterian Built in 1826 in a gothic style to a design by W F Poulton. Several have been demolished and others converted in shops and flats. They make a cortribution to Brecon’s interesting streetscape. 7 | P a g e Conservation Area Brecon A very large conservation area which includes the centre of the town, the castle, cathedral and Conservation along the Watton to the barracks.     'IARRIAGES Introduction This Volume of 'Stray' Marriages Is Published with the Hope That It Will Prove

    S T R A Y S Volume One: !'IARRIAGES Introduction This volume of 'stray' marriages is published with the hope that it will prove of some value as an additional source for the familv historian. For economic reasons, the 9rooms' names only are listed. Often people married many miles from their own parishes and sometimes also away from the parish of the spouse. Tracking down such a 'stray marriage' can involve fruitless and dishearteninq searches and may halt progress for many years. - Included here are 'strays', who were married in another parish within the county of Powys, or in another county. There are also a few non-Powys 'strays' from adjoining counties, particularly some which may be connected with Powys families. For those researchers puzzled and confused by the thought of dealing with patronymics, when looking for their Welsh ancestors, a few are to be found here and are ' indicated by an asterisk. A simple study of these few examples may help in a search for others, although it must be said, that this is not so easy when the father's name is not given. I would like to thank all those members who have helped in anyway with the compilation of this booklet. A second collection is already in progress; please· send any contributions to me.
