[generalNote]: Hanes gweinyddol / Braslun bywgraffyddol | Administrative history | Biographical sketch Nodyn | Note The Llysdinam estate was owned by the Venables family of Llysdinam, Newbridge-on-Wye, Breconshire, which descended from Joseph Venables of Llysdinam, who married Elizabeth Davies in 1723. Their second son, Lazarus, succeeded to the estate and married Elzabeth Jones of Woodhill, Shropshire, in 1771. Their heir was Richard Venables (1774-1858), archdeacon of Carmarthen and vicar of Clyro 1811-1846, who married Sophia Lister of Girsby House, Lincolnshire. Their heir was Richard Lister Venales (1809-94), vicar of Clyro and Bettws Clyro, who married firstly, Mary Augusta Dalrymple Adam, daughter of General Alexander Poltaratzky. His second wife was Agnes Minna Pearson. His heir from his second marriage was Katherine Minna (b. 1870) who married Charles Leyshon Dillwyn- Venables-Llewelyn, 2nd baronet in 1893. He assumed the additional surname of Venables by royal licence in 1893. The Llysdinam estate was therefore added to the Penllergaer and Ynis-y-gerwn estates, Glamorgan, which were already held by the Dillwyn-Llewelyn family. [? 1831]-1888, (mainly social, personal and legal). Other personal papers include the diaries of Richard Lister Venables, 1828-1893, diaries and journals of George Stovin Venables, and diaries of Mary Hannah Venables, 1809-1834. -- The remainder of the archive comprises mainly title deeds, 1665-1863, relating to properties in Breconshire, Denbighshire, Merioneth, Radnorshire, Montgomeryshire, and in the USA, personal, housekeeping and bank accounts, 1806-1893, and material relating to establishing All Saints church, Newbridge-on-Wye, 1883. Summary This report presents for approval the 2016/17 budget and also identifies the proposals for 2017/18 and 2018/19 budgets which will be further developed throughout 2016/17. Cabinet has received 3 financial strategy reports over the last year setting out the budget position for the Council over the next 3 years. The report to Cabinet on 28 October 2015 set out the development of a Sustainable Business Model to allow the Council to consider what services will be affordable going forward. Savings proposals to balance 2016/17 were identified in the report on 9 December 2015 and following the Provisional Local Government Finance Settlement on 17 December 2015, the Financial Strategy report to Cabinet on 27 January refined the 2016/17 budget and provided details of what service budgets would look like in 2017/18 and 2018/19 within the current resource projections. As previously recommended to Council in the report to Cabinet on 9 December 2015, increases in Council Tax of 2% specifically to be used for Adult Social Care and a further 1.99% increase to be used as general resources are included in the projections. This report provides the final position for 2016/17 budget which has been updated for the Final Local Government Finance Settlement, announced on 8 February 2016. This has seen an improved position for Shropshire Council, with an additional £5.5m in Rural Services Delivery Grant and Transitionary grant provided for 2016/17, reducing to £3m in 2017/18.

Introduction Section 69 of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 imposes a duty on Local Planning Authorities to determine from time to time which parts of their area are „areas of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance‟ and to designate these areas as conservation areas. Hay-on-Wye is one of four designated conservation areas in the National Park. Planning authorities have a duty to protect these areas from development which would harm their special historic or architectural character and this is reflected in the policies contained in the National Park’s Local Development Plan. There is also a duty to review Conservation Areas to establish whether the boundaries need amendment and to identify potential measures for enhancing and protecting the Conservation Area. The purpose of a conservation area appraisal is to define the qualities of the area that make it worthy of conservation area status. A clear, comprehensive appraisal of its character provides a sound basis for development control decisions and for developing initiatives to improve the area.

(Your name) ii Abstract The thesis examines the problem of infant mortality in Merthyr Tydfil 1865- 1908. In particular it investigates why Merthyr Tydfil, an iron, steel and coal producing town in south Wales, experienced high infant mortality rates throughout the nineteenth century which rose by the end of the century despite sixty years of public health reforms. The historiography of infant mortality in nineteenth-century Britain includes few Welsh studies although the south Wales Coalfield played an important part in industrial and demographic change in Britain during the second half of the nineteenth century. The thesis argues that conditions of industrial development shaped the social, economic and public health experience in Merthyr, ensnaring its citizens in social disadvantage, reflected in the largely unacknowledged human toll among mothers and babies in that process. The thesis analyses the causes of over 17, 000 infant deaths in Merthyr Tydfil from the primary evidence of an unusually complete series of Medical Officer of Health Reports to identify the principal attributed causes of infant death and explain their social origins and context. Remains of seventeenth-century terraced formal garden to north and eighteenth/nineteenth- century pleasure grounds to south, all within site of Norman marcher castle (south side being site of outer ward). Type of Site Border castle c. 1200. Jacobean manor built on to castle c. 1660; formal gardens by 1741. South gardens developed from at least c. 1809 Main Phases of Construction c. 1660; c. 1809 on SITE DESCRIPTION Hay Castle lies on the south side of the town, behind the market place, on the north edge of a ridge which descends to the south below. From the castle views can be taken north into south Radnorshire or south towards Cusop and the Black Mountains. The present house and surviving portion of the castle keep and inner curtain wall lie on the north and north-east sides of the medieval motte and bailey ensuring a position above the town. The house is a tall, stone two-storeyed Jacobean manor which faces 1 north and south, with seven Dutch dormer gables, the south front covered in Virginia Creeper.
