Montgomery Practice

Kind donations have meant the Montgomery Practice has been able to purchase ambulatory blood pressure monitoring and diagnostic equipment. This helps the provision of better care and is of very direct benefit, often removing the need for a hospital appointment. If you would like to make a donation, this can be dropped in at the Montgomery Practice (Montgomery or Newtown surgeries). Please mark this for the attention of Montgomery Patients' Association. All donations are hugely appreciated.

BERRIEW WI

The Berriew WI April Meeting opened with an inspiring illustrated talk on Beekeeping by Rachael Kellaway. Her interest had developed in childhood when she had kept tadpoles, frogs and other small creatures from the wild. Humans had been harvesting honey from bees for thousands of years and are depicted in ancient cave art. They are one of the most advanced social insects, and have developed ingenious strategies in order to reproduce and survive. The queen, drones and worker bees all contribute to life in the hive, where they live and work in the dark. Rachael gave examples of garden flowers which would attract wild bees, including cranesbill, clover and other single open flowers. Rachael was thanked by Ferol for such an illuminating and fascinating talk.

The usual business meeting then took place. There were two invitations to talks about hats and millinery, one at and one at Castle Caerinion. Members were reminded about the Newsletter Fundraiser on April 27th, when the WI would be responsible for the cake stall.

Refreshments were served by Lorraine and Gill Evans. Jill Sadler won the raffle. Debbie, Peta, Ferol, Cathy , Jan, Helen and Catriona all gained the most marks in the Bee quiz. Next month members would be visiting the Newtown Textile Museum, followed by a meal.

He was involved with training the pilots of the Red Arrows and explained their dare devil manoeuvres. He was very privileged to have been chosen to be a Pall Bearer at the Queen Mother's funeral and gave us an insight into the behind the scenes of such ceremonials. He was thanked by Jane Hancock. Spring Lawn Care

The first couple of months in the spring is a time when looking after your lawns can be a beneficial task. If you start off well then you are helping your lawn cope with what lies ahead during the growing season. Many people today tend to continue mowing the lawn into December and I have seen people begin their grass cutting regime as early as February, if the grass is showing signs of growth. Like most plants in the garden they to have a rest period to recover from being mowed weekly throughout the spring, summer and autumn months. The ideal time for the first mowing of the season is during March or even early April, I will be making my first cut in the next week. There are a few things to take into consideration make sure your mower has had a service and the blades are sharp, so they cut and not rip the grass blades. Mowing your lawn on the highest setting and fortnightly cuts in the first few weeks of the month helps to stimulate growth without giving the grass blades a shock. Over the following four to six weeks you can begin to introduce a weekly cut, providing the grass is growing, with each cut you can reduce the setting further until you reach the optimum cutting height of 5-10cm. To have the perfect lawns time and effort is required but there are a few easy tasks that you can carry out to help improve your lawn. Now is the idea time to aerate any compaction, simply take a fork and push it into the compacted areas and give it a wiggly from the handle. This opens up the ground and stimulates the roots, where the holes appear you can brush in a fine sand or horticultural grit to help the drainage. Often bare patches in the summer and winter can be caused by compaction. Feeding your lawns in the spring gives the grass blades a tonic and sets the lawn off for the season, always apply your lawn feed when it is due to rain or is raining. This will help to wash the fertiliser down to the roots and will also prevent the grass blades from being scorched. There may be a few bare patches to be filled in, you can either add an additional piece of turf or sow some grass seed into the space. Prepare the ground by loosely breaking the compacted surface, rake to create a fine tilth, firm lightly and then lay your turf and firming lightly to encourage the turf roots to come into contact with the soil. If seed sowing, sprinkle the grass seed and lightly rake. Water gently when finished. Top Tips: Mowing height is essential to prevent weeds and moss form entering your lawns, if the grass is cut too short this is an ideal growing space for moss and weeds! Keep your grass longer and mow less in hot summers, this helps the grass to cope with hot dry weather better and reduces the need for watering as frequently.

Growing in Containers

My first ever experience of growing in a container was planting out for interior displays but my biggest experience was creating seasonal drama for the containers at Gardens. My own displays evolved when I became a head gardener in early career. The starting point begins with the growing medium that will support and nourish the plants over the period of time they are in the container. Fundamentally you need an open growing medium or compost to help the formation of roots. Loam in your compost will help retain moisture whilst adding grit this will help with drainage. Depending on the type of plants you are planning to grow will depend on the type of compost you require. The addition of a slow release fertiliser enables nutrients to be released over a period of time, the compost will also contain nutrients with a timescale on how many weeks nutrition is available to the plants. With lots of containers available the choice is yours to decide what would work best in your garden. The best tip I can offer is to increase the size of the pot to plant ratio by no more than three to four finger widths from the plant roots to the edge of the pot. When it comes to planting out a container with more than one plant the same rule applies between the plants themselves. If you are planting out for the summer and using big or bold plants, then double the width between the plants to allow room for growth. The depth of container can sometime be a challenge when using shallow rooting plants. A simple solution is to fill the bottom with polystyrene chips, cubs or chunks. This will reduce the volume of compost required, allows drainage and has the potential to increase temperature in the pot which is ideal for rooting It is important to have the right balance with the pot and plants. A large depth of pot with small plants could domi- nate the visual appearance likewise having a small pot with big bold plants would look top heavy and unbalanced. Plants such as alpines and cacti thrive in large or long container, they do require a shallow depth to grow well. A regular question I get asked is why did my plants die in my container? More often than not it is because they have either been over watered, under watered or over potted! Within a small garden, such as a courtyard a collection of pots that make up a seasonal display or a long-term scheme can work well. Containers planted in the entrance offers a statement to the home and can create a welcom- ing feeling to your visitors. Become an experimentalist! You may be thinking what is this all about and why? By experimenting we learn and de- velop our skills and what a better way to do this through our seasonal containers. I have always taken the view if you don't get it right one year that's okay because we always have a fresh start each spring growing plants in containers. Have you ever considered growing your salad leaves in a hanging basket or some troughing? Not only is it an easy way to water and pick your crop it also provides an opportunity to grow within a limited space such as a courtyard or small balcony area. Wouldn't it be easier to pick your strawberries without having to bend down! Why not try some new growing tech- niques to simplify how your garden works for you!
