D MORGAN LEWIS 1938002 Ffynhonnell / Source The late Reverend Professor D Morgan Lewis, M.A., Aberystwyth. Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1937-38 Disgrifiad / Description The late Professor Morgan Lewis left a memorandum in which he expressed a wish that the National Library should be allowed to select from his library any manuscripts, books and periodicals which it required. Although the memorandum was not a legal document, His Honour Judge Lloyd Morgan, acting on behalf of the executors, has given effect to it (NLW MSS 11614-97). The manuscripts include sermons written by the testator, 1868-1932, by his father, Rev Evan Lewis, Brynberian, 1837-40 (NLW MSS 11658-60A); by Rev David Rees, Llanelly, 1824-7 (NLW MSS 11677-87), and by Rev Simon Evans, 1852-4, 1873-6; lists of baptisms, marriages, burials and members at Hebron, Penygroes, and Nebo chapels during Simon Evans's pastorates, 1843-85; manuscripts of Rev J. Lloyd James, 'Clwydwenfro', including an album compiled by him relating mainly to the affairs of Glandwr Church, Pembrokeshire, and especially to the ministry and other activities of Rev John Davies, 'Shon Gymro'; and a translation of Canwyll y Cymry into English by 'Clwydwenfro'. The books number approximately 881 volumes. Many of them are duplicates, and Judge Lloyd Morgan was quite willing that these volumes should be used for loan purposes in connection with tutorial and other extra-mural classes. The collection contains a large number of hymn books--Welsh, English, German, etc.,--and also many volumes of Welsh periodicals, but, as Professor Morgan Lewis expressed a wish that as many as possible of the latter should be presented to the Congregational Union Library, Swansea, only those volumes and parts of which copies were not already in the National Library were selected (Dept of Printed Books). There are also a number of Ordnance Survey maps and other maps and plans of places in Great Britain, a scrapbook containing engravings of views in England and Wales, miscellaneous prints and portraits of ministers and others (Dept of Pictures and Maps). Mynegai Brynberian (Nyfer), Llanelli, Pen-y-groes (Llanllyfni), Sir Benfro, Abertawe. `THE PRINCES OF WALES OF THE BLOOD ROYAL OF ENGLAND' 1938003 Ffynhonnell / Source His Majesty the King. Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1937-38 Disgrifiad / Description As a memento of the Royal Visit of July 15, 1937, His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to present to the Library a manuscript volume entitled:- ' The/Princes of Wales/of the Blood Royal of/England with Their Armorial Ensigns/ deduced from MCCLXXXIV to/His Royal Highness/George-Augustus Frederick/prince of Wales/Regent/of the United Kingdom of/Great Britain and Ireland/MDCCCXI (NLW MS 12352C). It is the work of Sir George Nayler (? 1764-1831), York Herald and Genealogist of the Bath, who subsequently became Clarenceux king-of-arms and Garter king-of-arms, and who undertook a 'History of the Coronation of King George IV', although he did not live to complete more than the two parts which were published in 1824 at the price of twelve guineas each. (See Dictionary of National Biography, Vol. XL, pp. 129-130.) The manuscript, which is finely executed on vellum, consists of brief biographical sketches of sixteen Princes of Wales, beginning with Edward of Caernarvon (afterwards Edward II) and ending with George Augustus Frederick (afterwards George IV). On the leaf following each sketch is the coat of arms, emblazoned in tinctures, of the Prince of Wales to whom the preceding text relates. On the leaves immediately following the coat of arms of Edward, the Black Prince, are illuminated drawings of his tomb in Canterbury Cathedral and of the Prince of Wales's crest,-- three ostrich feathers with the motto 'Ich Dien'. Edward, the son of Henry VIII, who afterwards became Edward VI, has been omitted from the series. A sheet of paper of later date than the manuscript, on which biographical data relating to him have been written, is loose in the volume. The binding is of red Levant morocco, with 'dull gilt' edges. It is decorated on the front with a shield inlaid in black on which are superimposed the Prince of Wales's feathers inlaid in white and outlined and feathered in gold, and which is surrounded by a design, in blind and gold, copied from that on the tomb of the Black Prince in Canterbury Cathedral. The same design, without the shield and feathers, is repeated on the back. On the spine are one-line panels and lettering in gold, while the inside borders are also of one-line panels in gold. His Majesty the King has autographed the volume on the first fly-leaf--'George R.I. July 15th, 1937'. Mynegai Caernarfon, Caergaint.
