Welsh National Agricultural Society And Royal Welsh Agricultural Society Welsh Pony and Cob Winners 1904 -1950 Scrapbook compiled by David Davies The Welsh National Agricultural Society was instigated by Lewes Loveden Pryse of Aberllolwyn, Llanerchaeron, W B. Powell, Nanteos and Vaughan Davies, Tanybwlch. Initially there was much local hostility to the concept, which followed on from the success of the North Cardiganshire Agricultural Show held in Aberystwyth in 1903. An initial meeting was held in the Lion Royal Hotel, Aberystwyth on 1st February. Loveden Pryse gathered many influential supporters from across Wales and after many meetings held in Aberystwyth the society was formed and rules agreed. Earl of Powis was elected President, Vice president, Lord Tredegar and Loveden Pryse, the General Manager. Despite ongoing critics the first show was arranged for the 3rd and 4th August 1904 and was held at the Vicarage fields and then from 1908 the adjacent Plascrug meadow. In the first show in 1904, there were 111 Ponies and cobs entered, compared to 96 in 1905, 101 in 1906, 104, in 1907, 121 in 1908 and 118 in 1909. The Initial shows were a success attracting good entries in all sections and from across Wales, In 1908 the WPCS cob section was given a further boost by the Prince of Wales awarding a cup for the best cob of old Welsh type. Attendance at the first show was 9500 due to the fact that the railway companies laid on cheap excursions from North and South Wales. However, in 1907, there was a train derailment in Abermule and 10 horses and 3 handlers were killed. For the 1908 show there were twenty three special trains which comprised of 224 cattle and horse trucks and 100 passenger coaches. Relationships improved between the other show societies and the WNAG when representative from each area were appointed as ring stewards. The Aberystwyth years were blighted by a poor financial position and so it was agreed to make the show migratory and in 1910 the show was held in Llanelli. During those initial years the WNAS did much to support the WPCS and help in ensuring legislation to clear the mountains of undesirable stallions, to protect the purity of the Mountain breeds and to lift the import duty on Welsh Ponies exported to America. From 1910 the membership of the general council was changed to three members from each county and one each from the three Welsh Universities, thus making a total of 42 members that each served a three year term. In 1911 the King, George V, agreed to become patron which further secured the place of the society although its finances did not improve until Lord David Davies (chairman of Council) and two others agreed to act as guarantors to the society. In 1914, the show became a three day show. Following the First World War the English Royal Show (RASE) restarted in 1919 but it was not until 1922, when King George agreed to allow the Society to change its name to the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society, did their shows recommence at Wrexham and at which point membership increased and the financial situation improved. The Society still faced challenges due to the great depression, but the appointment of RWAS secretaries, Mr Arthur Evans, Bronwylfa in 1921 and Capt. T A Howson, Gresford, in 1927 (also Secretary of the WPCS), under the leadership of Lord Davies did much to secure the future of the Society. Following the Second World War the first show was held in Carmarthen in 1947, no show in 1948 due to petrol rationing and the migratory show recommenced in 1949 in Swansea. In 1948, Arthur George, succeeded Capt. Howson as secretary of the RWAS and WPCS a position that was maintained until 1964 by which time the societies had severed their ties and the WPCS had moved its secretariat (Tom Roberts) to Aberystwyth. The financial position of the RWAS was still a concern throughout the 1950’s, however, it was the concerns raised by exhibitors during this period about facilities, traffic management, the mud of Machynlleth and Bangor, the floods in Aberystwyth in 1957 and the provision of food which increased the pressure on the society to find a permanent base with better facilities and infrastructure. In 1963 the first show on the purpose built site at Llanelwedd was not an instant success and there were many who opposed this move. It was not until 1975 that the show started to gain real momentum and has grown in popularity ever since. Royal Welsh Champions Sections A and B 1904 –1950 Year 19..     June 2014 Abandoned Mine Case Study: Cwm Mawr Lead & Zinc Mine Cwm Mawr Mine, also known as Fairchance or Cwm Mawr No. 1, lies approximately 500m northeast of the village of Pontrhydfendigaid, Ceredigion. The mine is one of three known to have an impact on water quality in the Afon Teifi upstream of Cors Caron (Tregaron Bog) Special Area of Conservation (SAC). The other significant mines in this area are Abbey Consols and Esgair Mwyn. The presence of Cwm Mawr is first recorded in 1753 and was subsequently worked intermittently, at varying degrees of profitability, until its closure in 1917. Today, the minimal evidence of the area’s past industrial importance includes the remains of buildings, shafts, small waste tips and the collapsed portal of the deep adit level. Cwm Mawr Mine lies within the catchment of the Nant Lluest/Nant y Cwm, a south-westerly flowing minor tributary of the Afon Teifi. The hydrology of the site has been altered due to its mining and agricultural history, resulting in a bifurcation of the Nant Lluest upstream of the mine site, creating the Cwm Mawr Stream. The majority of flow in the Cwm Mawr Stream is diverted towards a nearby farm for agricultural purposes, with the remaining flow passing along a heavily incised channel before entering an open mine shaft. It is believed to re- emerge both through seepages approximately 135m downstream of the shaft, and from the Cwm Mawr Adit 350m southwest of the shaft. The re-issue discharges into the Cwm Mawr Tributary which flows south-westerly, being joined by the adit discharge before entering the Nant Lluest.

    Capel Soar-y-mynydd, Ceredigion Richard Coates 2017 Capel Soar-y-mynydd, Ceredigion The chapel known as Soar-y-mynydd or Soar y Mynydd lies near the eastern extremity of the large parish of Llanddewi Brefi, in the valley of the river Camddwr deep in the “Green Desert of Wales”, the Cambrian Mountains of Ceredigion (National Grid Reference SN 7847 5328). It is some eight miles south-east of Tregaron, or more by road. Its often-repeated claim to fame is that it is the remotest chapel in all Wales (“capel mwyaf pellennig/anghysbell Cymru gyfan”). Exactly how that is measured I am not sure, but it is certainly remote by anyone in Britain’s standards. It is approached on rough and narrow roads from the directions of Tregaron, Llanwrtyd Wells, and Llandovery. It is just east of the now vanished squatter settlement (tŷ unnos) called Brithdir (whose site is still named on the Ordnance Survey 6" map in 1980-1), and it has become progressively more remote as the local sheep-farms have been abandoned, most of them as a result of the bad winter of 1946-7. Its name means ‘Zoar of the mountain’ or ‘of the upland moor’. Zoar or its Welsh equivalent Soar is a not uncommon chapel name in Wales. It derives from the mention in Genesis 19:20-30 of a place with this name which served as a temporary sanctuary for Lot and his daughters and which was spared by God when Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed. (“Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.

Summary 1.1 This is the Powys County Council Land Availability Study (JHLAS) for 2016 which presents the housing land supply for the area at the base date of 1st April 2016. It replaces the report for the previous base date of 2015. 1.2 The JHLAS has been prepared in accordance with the requirements of Planning Policy Wales (PPW) and Technical Advice Note 1 (TAN 1). It shows that based on the Table 4 calculation method set out in TAN 1 Powys County Council has 2.2 years housing land supply. In regard to the calculation method used, TAN 1 states in situations where the adopted LDP only covers part of the 5 year study period, the average annual requirement form the LDP should be extrapolated to give an estimate of the land required (See Table 4 in Annex 3 for the formula for the calculation).
