Reader’s Reply – to ‘Maintaining and Enhancing Biodiversity’ in the April Newsletter. After reading Tim Ward’s article in the April Berriew Newsletter, I visited Berriew Cemetery and, to put it mildly, I was shocked to see the desecration, vandalisation, call it what you like, to that consecrated ground in which several generations of mine and my wife’s family are buried. In addition, this irresponsible act detracts from the beauty of our picturesque village and surrounding countryside. I trust that those who are responsible for spraying weedkiller on beautiful spring flowers and newly grown grass will never, never, be allowed to do it again. Peter Watkin.

Pantyffridd Defibrillator

Pantyffridd now have a defibrillator which is situated within the telephone kiosk in the centre of the hamlet by the church. There is no code as we do not have mobile signal within the area.

The defibrillator was handed over by North PADS Support Officer Tomos Hughes, Welsh Wales Am- bulance Service, on 9th April. Thank you to League of Friends for donating the defibrillator and to Pantyffridd community for supporting the fundraising efforts. The monies raised will go to maintaining the defibrillator.

No training is needed to use the defibrillator but CPR & defibrillator training will be organised by Jan Law- rence when Covid allows. Please contact if interested. email: [email protected].

WE ARE OPEN AGAIN FOR WORSHIP EACH WEEK - 2.30pm

We hope this newsletter finds you all safe and well and, with a bit of luck, immunised as well. Easter Sunday arrived like a new beginning for us as we were allowed to open for our service and …………..…… we even managed to sing outside (socially distanced of course) in the wonderful sunshine!

At long last we have been allowed to re-open again for physical worship. The correct Covid protocols will, of course, remain in place but we can now publish our preaching plan for May.  A reminder that our All Age Cell Group (AACG) worship takes a more informal style and is led by our own Worship Leaders whilst preacher led services follow a more formal pattern. All are welcome to join us for our 2.30pm weekly start. MAY 2021 2nd - Rev. Jacquie Evans - Holy Communion 9th - AACG 16th - Mr Terry or Mrs Eileen Jobling 23rd - AACG 30th - Rev. Bill Rowell

NB: please do wear warm clothes as Methodist guidelines state that we must have the maximum ventilation possible which may well result in doors and windows being left open during the colder weather.

For those unable to attend but who would like to participate in worship, we have two options freely available on our Circuit website each week. Please go to www.wbhmethodists.org.uk , latest News, where you can access both our weekly home worship sheets or a short recorded act of worship (approx 30 mins). Please follow the appropriate link for the style of worship you wish to follow and enjoy.

We are also discussing the possibility of re-opening for visitors to pop by on Wednesday & Thursday afternoons from 1st June , again with the correct Covid procedures in places, so do keep an eye on the Facebook page and of course, this newsletter.

Once again we find ourselves proceeding through the year at a grand pace. My daily walks, be they at 6am or later in the day, always lift the spirits, reminding me how wonderful our part of the world really is and that we are very blessed. Up in the Vale of Kerry (where I now live) the lambs have been abundant but, as a youngster I lived in a town and my knowledge of shepherds was very limited. My only experiences of them were watching them herding their flocks towards the farm or a new field down narrow lanes, ably assisted by their trusty sheepdogs and one or two fellow herders, possibly riding quad bikes. I remember vividly on many occasions sitting in my dad's car watching the sheep working their way around our vehicle, the farmer then thanking us for waiting patiently whilst he carried out his task. It was therefore quite strange to me to read in the bible that shepherds LED their sheep - going before them rather than bringing up the rear! John 10 v.4 reads "When he brings all his sheep out, he goes ahead of them and they follow him because they know his voice" (Youth Bible). Until I moved to the countryside, about 30+ years ago I'd never seen sheep led. They were always driven and seemed quite scatty animals to me, running away from anything and everything. But watching over the years, and especially of recent, the sheep only have to hear the distant rumble of the quad or the farmer shout and they're off - well most of them - making their way towards him, expecting to be fed.

The analogy of Jesus being called "The Good Shepherd" therefore works very well. He too calls each one of us individually and, if we choose to hear, we move towards Him. By doing so we are then "fed" with the spirit of faith. Along the way He too has helpers, people who encourage us in our faith. They could be ordained clergy (though not necessarily, I have known some who have had the exact opposite effect!), worship leaders, church family who are a little further along their faith path than ourselves or people within our community whose faith is quiet but sure but somehow shines through. The bible tells us that "The Shepherd" knows each one of us by name - John 10 part v.3 "He calls his own sheep by name ………" (Youth Bible). The question is, when He calls us into a personal relationship with Him, how hungry are we?

Until next time, take care. Mandy

St. John’s Church Fron

On Easter Sunday the Rev Roger Taylor returned to the Fron to take the Eucharist Service and it was good to catch up and renew old friendships, this being the first service since lockdown last year! It was also a pleasure to welcome Rev Caroline Rhodes to take our Eucharist service at the Fron Church on Sunday 18th April. This was the first time Rev Caroline had officiated here since she was appointed just before lockdown last year, so the congregation was pleased to meet and chat with her. As we look forward to the summer months we hope for a return to a more normal life and the re-opening of our churches once again! On another note we, at the Fron thank Cllr Tudor Jones, Chair of Berriew Community Council, and C Cllr Dai Davies for their efforts in getting the drains and some of the pot holes repaired on the roadway from the Halfway up past the Fron Church. Drains were found that had never been seen before!! Come to think of it the size of some of the pot holes had never been seen before either!! Helen

Berriew Show 2021

The Committee continues to work hard to make sure that the Berriew Show takes place on 28th August this year. Obviously, some things are completely out of our control and only time will tell whether we can go ahead or not.

However, if we don't continue to plan and make the necessary arrangements then the show certainly won't happen! So instead, we are planning a show which is mainly outdoors and removes the close contact elements that we would normally expect. Unfortunately this means that the Exhibition Marquee with all the horticultural, photographic, craft and cooking entries will not be there and the majority of the craft stalls will be outside.

On the plus side, we still expect to have the dog, sheep and horse shows, entertainment in the main ring, the vintage vehicle display and dozens of trade stands and craft stalls outside. There will be a children's entertainer, a choir, funfair, children's races, fancy dress and the usual wide range of food and drink on offer. We also hope to have some competition classes which can be staged outside and some garden classes to be judged in late June. Tickets will not be available in advance, only at the gate.

The Sunday lunch will be replaced by the President's Family Picnic with visitors encouraged to attend in family groups and either buy food at the venue or bring their own picnic. Entertainment and a charity raffle will be laid on and the Show 200 Club draw will be made. Entrance will be free. Unfortunately, none of this is cast in stone and the Committee will make a decision six weeks before the show regarding the safety and of course legality of holding these events. We may need to put some special measures in place on the day. The weather too may have a bigger part to play than usual with fewer undercover activities.

We feel that if we can pull this off, The Show will be a breath of fresh air for our visitors and that continuing to plan in this manner is the best way forward. Show President Karen Kirkwood commented, "The Berriew Show Committee are once again working hard to put on a Show in August to give villagers and visitors a day to look forward to and enjoy. It will be as entertaining, interesting and fun as is possible in the developing circumstances and as President I look forward to welcoming, meeting and sharing the day with as many of you as can make it. Please come along to show your support for what I am sure will be a truly great day'.

Berriew W.I.

Who runs the world? Girls! (Or maybe it’s the WI)

At Berriew WI, we share many laughs, many cups of tea and pieces of cake. We learn about a huge variety of things from chocolate workshops and pig farms, local history, women’s health to visits to wildlife venues. Every member is there because they want to be, there is a huge feeling of support and friendship from everyone. We are a vibrant and respectful WI that doesn’t conform to the stereotype that might be out there. We acknowledge and accept people’s individuality, allowing friendships to form in a safe and caring environment. It’s not all jam making and cake baking at Berriew WI, but we do like that too!

One of the best things about Berriew WI are the members who are such an amazing and varied group of women. We are looking forward to having face-to-face meetings again. There is nothing to beat a roomful of women chatting and we can’t wait to experience that again when it is safe to do so.

Being in Berriew WI involves a lot more than just going to a monthly meeting; we meet up socially, go walking and take part in different sports. We are enthusiastic, involved in the community and support one another particularly in times of need. We also have a hard working committee who sort everything out behind the scenes too.

So why join Berriew WI? To learn a new skill. To campaign about relevant current issues. To be part of the community. Have you recently moved to the area and want to get to know new people? You might be saying all of the above but you might also be saying, “To make new friends” It might not be why you want to join but it is why members stay. I’m certain it’s one of the things we all missed in the last year. Not being able to get together for a chat and a cuppa or a glass of something with our WI mates.

As with other community groups Berriew WI has been impacted by Covid19 and we haven’t been able to have the full WI experience that we normally would. There is also a pandemic of loneliness, which during the last year has made life incredibly difficult for lots of people. However, we are ready to bounce back, in a gentle way at first until we can hold our normal monthly evening meeting in our usual lovely venue at Berriew Bowling Club. We are planning to have a few social gatherings outdoors over the next few months and I know there will be lots of fun and games, chat and laughter. To encourage our members to re-join and any possible new members to join we are offering a big reduction on our membership fee for the next 12 months. By joining Berriew WI it will give you the chance to spend time having fun in a caring environment where we can learn new things together and create friendships with people you may not normally meet. And all this for the bargain price of £22.40.

If you have any questions and would like to find out more please give me a call and we can have an informal chat about our fabulous group.

Go on, you know you want to!

NATIONAL GARDEN SCHEME: POWYS GARDENS OPEN FOR CHARITY

May 2021

What mad weather we had at the beginning of April! I think we had four seasons in one day a few times. Wrapped in a blanket in our tiny summer house, I read that April was time to start sowing seeds outside. Maybe not as the ground was white!

But as April moves on and we stride into May, the garden changes quite dramatically and this month is probably one of the busiest for gardeners. There are still seeds to sow and lots of potting on to do. I will be taking cuttings and spare seedlings to our village plant stall again and picturing how the garden may look in August when we open for the NGS. Oh! and I did buy three roses from David Austin which I hope will be in full flower by then!

If you are new to gardening, there is a useful section on our website for how to start a garden as well as top tips from experienced gardeners. Go to ‘Get into Gardening’ at ngs.org.uk Maybe you have been developing your garden over a number of years and were able to spend even more time in it last year, in which case you might like to look at BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine and enter their Garden of the Year competition 2021. Go to gardenersworld.com/garden- competition for details. Even better why not consider opening your garden for The National Garden Scheme in 2022. We are always looking for new gardens to open in Powys. We would love to hear from you. Do contact Susan Paynton on 01686 650531 or [email protected] for further details.

But the best news this month is that our gardens here in Wales are now open again. Bookings must be made on- line as numbers will be limited depending on the size of the garden so that social distancing can be ensured. Some gardens will offer refreshments and others will have plant stalls. All the details are on our website, go to Find A Garden and follow the directions for on-line booking. ngs.org.uk

Memories

I am sure that there are many people in Berriew who remember Frank Morris and his dog Mossy. I first met him in 1988 when I moved to the village and he was a familiar sight around the village.

The photograph was taken and featured in an article about Berriew by the Observer newspaper in 1993. He is shown sitting outside The Lion. When we told Frank about the picture he asked if we could get him a copy, so I wrote to the paper and they very kindly sent 2 copies, one of which I gave to Frank and the other I kept. Caroline Martin.

The Least Successful Round the World Cyclist.

Mr. Michael Murphy, a 22 year old draftsman from Stevenage in Hertfordshire, set off in August 1975 to cycle round the world. During the next two years he was robbed by Yugoslavian peasants, stoned by tribesmen in the Khyber Pass and nearly froze to death in a blizzard. When he finally arrived back in England in April 1977, he had only to collect his bike at Heathrow Airport and cycle the last 40 miles home. After 25,000 miles he confidently expected to make it back to Stevenage. His hopes were crushed, as was his bicycle, by a conveyor belt joining the plane to the customs hall. He had to hitch a lift home.

Taken from The Book of Heroic Failures.

Note from the Treasurer

Jenkins, Mr. & Mrs. David Cuddy, Mr. & Mrs. H. Jasper, Mrs. M. Evans and Mrs. M. Cox for their donations.

We would especially like to thank all the people who have so generously given donations to the Newsletter during the last twelve months when we had to cancel our annual fundraisers which were due to be held in April 2020 and April 2021 because of the Covid restrictions. Mrs. P. Hall Treasurer.

We would also like to thank PAVO for helping us to obtain some funding through a Community Connector Grant to go towards our losses in our financial year 1st April 2020 to 31st March 2021 due to Covid restrictions and the cancellation of our fundraisers. Val Wallis.
