The Young Folks of St Beuno’s As the Summer break comes to an end – we wish all the young folks returning to school an exciting and happy term. And for those going off to High School for the first time – enjoy the challenges that lie ahead.

Little saints: Saturday 18th August – 10.00 until 3.00pm

What a day it was! It was the seventh summer activity day – we began in 2012! – when we were celebrating the Olympics. Each year since we have included some sports activities into our day. It was no different this year. But we called the day – Lucky 7! - discovering several things connected to the number 7; God created the world in 7 days; there are 7 colours in the rainbow; seven days in the week; folks play sevens in Rugby and hockey!; and the word Friends has seven letters. We enjoyed some crafts and indoor games - and then competed in some sports; egg and spoon, sack race, sprints and mini marathon. Maybe the most favoured activity was Limbo! How amazing is their ability to bend and twist! Our next day together will be the Saturday before the last week of the new term –

20TH OCTOBER – 10.00 – 12.15pm in the Old School.

Please put this date in your diaries. We will e-mail you all nearer the time. Please remember to respond to it so that we know how many are coming. In the meantime – try to find some more to join us. We are always happy to welcome new members

St Beuno’s Choir and Organists/pianists

Choir practices will begin again in the Old School on

Wednesday 5th September – 6.00-7.15pm

We shall be preparing for our harvest services and for Peter’s farewell service – so lots of work – but all will be done in joy! Lots of time for new members to join us!!... come and enjoy singing, chat and have fun! ……….not forgetting a cuppa after rehearsal!

And for those who play a keyboard – we would welcome offers to help.

AND FINALLY – from youngest to oldest – from our young folks and our choir and organists – we wish Peter and Deb a long and happy retirement. We thank them for the times we have shared together – for Peter’s ‘active’ stories at Little saints – his guitar accompaniments and Deb’s organ playing and singing with the choir – Good Luck and God Bless you both.

The Cemetery and Church burial ground.

Dear Community, You may remember that some time ago we requested that in order to allow our burial grounds to be kept neat and tidy we should help by keeping the graves clear. We are reminding everyone by repeating our original letter and would be grateful for families to help us so that the mower can be taken over the ground. Also – please do not use glass containers for your flowers – as they can be upset and broken. ------We, the members of the CC – the Church Committee - are privileged that we have been able to provide a final resting place for your loved ones. Our Cemetery is a peaceful resting place – where we encourage you to spend time as you remember the days you shared together; and we would all wish it to remain a place of calm serenity where families may reflect and pray.

The CC is responsible for ensuring the upkeep of the Cemetery and wishes to ensure respect for all those who have been interred there. We strive to look after the ground as well as possible, and are grateful to those who help us in this task.

In order to maintain the ground, each grave, may be marked by its headstone, and should only be furnished with living or silk flowers, no plastic ones please, in vases on the plinth. On Remembrance Sunday, poppies, and at Christmas, wreathes, may be placed there. Shrubs or plants may not be planted on the grave itself. This will enable grass to grow and then a lawn appearance which will maintain a tranquil space for those at rest; and allow respect for all families who have loved ones laid here.

We are aware of the sadness and grief which you feel, and continue to hold you all in our prayers. May God’s blessing be with you. Church Committee St Beuno’s Church Berriew

Footnote: The new organisation of Church in into Mission Areas means that the PCC - [ Parochial Church Council] is replaced by CC – [Church committee.]

Berriew Mothers’ Union July Meeting.

On a lovely warm summers’ afternoon Branch Leader Iris welcomed everyone to the July Meeting of the Mothers’ Union. Archdeacon Peter Pike was the speaker for the afternoon and this was to be his last talk to Mothers’ Union before his retirement at the end of September. We all enjoyed his thought provoking talk about Piety , Prayer and, most important, Love. After a passage from Matthew’s gospel we listened to a prayer on love and understanding followed by two Seaney Heaney’s extracts from his essay ‘The Poet as a Christian’. Everyone was very moved by Heaney’s poem entitled ‘Clearances’ from ‘The Haw Lantern'and the talk ended with another contribution from the Seamus -this one called Route 110. We meet again on Wednesday 26th September at 2p.m. at The Old School when the speaker is Revd. Alexis Smith. Do come along and join in a relaxing afternoon always followed by tea and refreshments. All welcome! Ann Dixon.

Thank you

Eric Lloyd's family would like to thank everyone for their condolences, attendance and generous donations received at the funeral and the beautiful blessing sung by the choir, which made the service very special.

Also thanking people for their kindness and help around the village towards him especially in his later years which was much appreciated by the family.

Thank you

Jane, Ruth and family would like to thank everyone who sent them cards, gifts and kind messages after the death of Dad, John Lloyd. Also to everyone who attended his funeral and gave donations to Marie Curie and Berriew Bellringers. £600 will be shared between the two. Thank you to Rev. Esther Yates for her care and support and for conducting a lovely gentle service reflecting the person that John was. Dad was a lovely gentle man who will be much missed but never forgotten. Many thanks, Jane Nash

Yoga for fitness and wellbeing

There are many reasons to take up yoga, here are just some of them.

1) Yoga benefits your full body—externally and internally.

The twisting, stretching and folding of a yoga practice are good for the digestive system, the circulatory system, the lymph system and more. It’s a great way to detox the body and can improve your cardiovascular system. And all this while developing stronger muscles.

2) Yoga teaches acceptance.

Yoga helps you believe you’re perfect the way you are—with your strengths and your weaknesses. Yoga is not about self-improvement, it's about self-acceptance.

3) Yoga will make you lean.

By stretching your muscles as you’re strengthening them, your body will take on a leaner appearance.

4)You need only a mat and no fancy equipment

Yoga relies on your body for strengthening. Gym classes use weights and other equipment. Through different asanas, your full body becomes toned and stronger by using your own entire body weight as 'weights'.

5) You can do yoga anywhere.

Yoga is best learnt in a class, but you can easily practice at home, outside or in small spaces. All you need is about 6 feet by 4 feet and you have your own yoga studio.

6) Yoga is kinder to the body.

Yoga can be gentle or intense whatever you want. Checkout Ashtanga Yoga on youtube for something intense! Yoga builds heat and works your muscles, but you’re doing what your body allows you to do. Yoga also stretches as you move through the postures and a good yoga practice builds on itself to prepare the body for the next position.

7) Yoga eases your aches and pains.

Yoga slowly stretches muscles and opens the energy channels of the body. The increased flexibility keeps muscles and joints lubricated and healthy.

8) It’s not yoga without proper yogic breathe

During times of stress, it’s easy to forget to breathe—really breathe, and not just shallow breaths. The breathe helps to calm the body and increases concentration. The overall intention is to release tension throughout the body and mind. During a yoga practice, you focus on the breath, the posture and the gaze. Outside distractions are tuned out.

9) Yoga reduces stress.

Yoga classes should include relaxation. It gives you a chance to clear the mind of the stresses of the day. With practice, stressful situations can be dealt with more easily and overall stress levels decrease.

10) ANYONE can practice yoga.

No matter your age or your health, you can practice yoga. Yoga has even been found to help people who have health ailments ranging from Parkinson’s to cancer.

Just try it! Classes at the village Community Hall, Castle

Berriew 12th Charity Sheepdog Trials.

The sheepdog trials took place on July 19th at Cil Farm, Berriew on a very hot day. With around 90 dogs competing it is a very long day. Janet and her tea tent team kept competitors and spectators fed and watered all day, while George and his team managed the sheep on a very hot field. Two ladies drove in and parked their car, they were mother and daughter, and they told us their story. (Unfortunately we didn't get their names) Mum was 90 years old, had always watched 'One Man and His Dog' on the T.V. and had always wanted to see a live sheepdog trial. They had gone onto the Sheepdog Trials website and found the listing for one in Berriew. They then found somewhere to stay in Montgomery, hired a car and travelled down from The Wirral especially. However, once here they couldn't find details of exactly where the Trial was being held and nobody they asked could tell them. Then they went onto the Berriew Website and happened to see the link to the Berriew Newsletter, where at last they found the information they needed. As it was so hot, one of the competitors parked next to them had a spare umbrella and set it up to give Mum some shade and she sat there all day thoroughly enjoying the competition.

The winner of the morning trial was Idris Morgan from Aberystwyth and in the afternoon the winner was Aled Owen from Corwen.

£300 was raised for the Lullaby Trust.

We thought the following picture we found was perfect to follow the sheepdog trials report.

We would like to add our personal thanks to everybody who helped to organise the trials day and make it such a success, especially to Janet and George – we had a lovely day watching the dogs, talking to competitors and spectators and thoroughly enjoyed the homemade cakes!! Val & Barry Wallis.

NATIONAL GARDEN SCHEME LOCAL GARDENS OPEN FOR CHARITY

The National Garden Scheme has released new research as part of the charity’s latest campaign, Open the garden gate to wellbeing, which reveals visiting a private garden is good for the soul. In a recent survey from England and Wales over 85% of supporters of the NGS reported that being in a National Garden Scheme garden has a positive impact on their mental wellbeing and 8 out of 10 feel happier after visiting than before.

So, give yourself a boost and arrange to visit one of the many wonderful gardens in that open for the National Garden Scheme. In September there are gardens like Plas Dinam at and Hebron, Pont Faen and 1 Ystrad House at Knighton that are open by arrangement so you can get together with a group of friends and visit at a time to suit you. Remember when you visit one of these gardens you are also helping the caring charities including Carers Trust, Macmillan, Parkinson’s UK. This year the National Garden Scheme will be donating £3.1m raised by people like you visiting gardens and enjoying tea and cake.

You can discover more about our gardens and the charities supported by the National Garden Scheme in our 2018 Powys booklets and at www.ngs.org.uk . Keep up to date by following us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter @powysngs. Helen Anthony, Publicity Officer, 01686 941795 [email protected]

SEPTEMBER CROSSWORD

AUGUST SOLUTION

Re photo of Berriew in August Newsletter

The following was sent to us by Ferol Richards:

I can't tell you when the photo was taken, but I don't think it was taken after the end of the 1st World War. The name above the shop window is F.J. Hands. The Whittingham family were living there in 1911 according to the 1911 census.

I have a photo of Glansevern Lodge taken in 1907 with an arch over the gateway. This was also welcoming someone home. I think this was probably for the homecoming of Stephen Humphreys-Owen and Isabela Sassoon after their wedding in London.

Taken from 'The Right Joke for the Right Occasion:

'Mummy' said five year old Brian, 'I've been very good and filled the salt cellar like you asked me to, but it's taken a very long time'. 'Why is that?' 'Because it was very difficult getting the salt in through that tiny hole in the top'

Mother: 'Today you have a choice for dinner. You either eat it – or leave it.'

The last time I went on holiday for a fortnight it only rained twice: the first time for seven days, and the second time for a week.

My children have so many things in their rooms – TV, CD player, books, games – that, when they are naughty, as a punishment I have to send them to my room.

Editor's Postscript.

Sadly over recent weeks we have lost a number of Berriew residents. We send our condolences to the families of Hazel Pryce, Clive Lawton, Eric Lloyd, John Lloyd and Sheila Davies who have all passed away.

The closing date for the October Newsletter is Wednesday 19th September and the Newsletter will be published on Friday 28th September. My thanks to everybody who has given their time to help in the production and distribution of this Newsletter. Please note – all articles and correspondence left in the Newsletter Post Box must include a name and address and/or telephone number. Anonymous items will not be published.
