BERRIEW STORES, NEWS FROM THE SHOP

The village is gradually getting a little busier, and its lovely to see The Talbot and The Lion opening again.

We have lifted the barriers so customers can now walk around the shop and we can allow 3 customers at a time now. We would ask please keep to the social distancing rules and please stand behind the screen when we are serving at the Post Office.

We have now extended both the shop hours and the Post Office which I hope will help, but if we do need to change these, due to sickness or holidays we will let you know. Laura has now joined us full time which is wonderful news and is proving an asset to the shop.

We have now managed to get Plaster for the back room and the workmen have been beavering away in the evenings for us. As soon as this is dry Dave will be decorating, so we hope the back room will be finished soon. We have had another 2 chillers delivered this week so we have a new food to go fridge and the other chiller will be part of our Cheese and Charcuterie display.

We are still accepting grocery deliveries, orders can be made by either telephoning or by email to [email protected]

As usual many thanks for all your support, its been a tough few months but Kirsty, myself and Laura have had a few laughs and also a big thank you to Sarah for keeping us fed at lunchtimes!! Berriew Stores Opening Hours

PENTRE LLIFIOR METHODIST CHAPEL, BERRIEW. SY21 8QJ

ALL DETAILS SUBJECT TO CHANGE as the Covid-19 situation demands. Like our Facebook - Pentre Llifior Methodist Chapel - page to be kept up-to-date. We hope to re- open as soon as we are allowed to.

Hello to all, It seems a very long time now since the initial lockdown but we continue to pray for the safety of all readers and the wider communities as this edition is published. Guidelines for re-opening have been issued to our English chapels and we expect to follow suit shortly. Be assured that we will be doing our utmost to keep ourselves and any visitors safe. This will mean asking all to wash/sanitise hands and observe social distancing as well as making face coverings and disposable gloves available for those who wish to use them. In the meantime, as has become the norm during these very unusual times, our weekly worship sheets continue to be produced and published via our Circuit website - you are always welcome to use these for free. All services are prepared by ministers and lay preachers and can be found at:- www.wbhmethodists.org.uk

Access to the sheets is also available via our Facebook page along with the technical notes to be able to en- joy the service to its full potential. Here's a reminder of what to do. To join in the hymns or follow the readings in a new tab, Press Shift and Ctrl together (bottom left of keyboard) and (left) click on the link. You can then click back on the worship sheet once it starts to follow the hymn or reading. NOTE: Don't forget, though, to close the new tab after the audio has finished. Apologies for the ads at the start of the hymns, our tech guys just can't seem to remove these. By the time you read this, restrictions in Wales with have eased a little more. We are now allowed to travel over 5 miles and the pubs and shops have been allowed to re-open under certain conditions. Whilst I am happy that I can now travel to visit family, I shan't be in rush to avail myself of the pubs or shops - I am still a little cautious so will wait a while longer before venturing into the fray. Some will know from, from past issues, that I had my daughter and her boyfriend living with us temporarily during lockdown. With Eng- land's easing of restrictions they have now ventured back to - suitably laden with copious amounts of home-made washable face coverings (I surprised myself how adept I got at making them!). The wearing of masks looks as though it may become part of the norm, well at least for the time being, but in the past, we have generally associated them with someone wanting to hide something - identity mostly. Many famous characters wore masks:- Zorro, Batman & Robin, The Loan Ranger etc. More recently the TV show "The Masked Singer" used this guise to keep us guessing who was being hidden. The bible however, tells us that we can't fool God by wearing a "mask" - he always see through any façade we wear. Adam tried to hide in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3 v.8) and Jonah tried to hide by running away because he did- n't want to go to Nineveh (Jonah 1 vs.3&4). "The Lord sees everything you do and where you go" - (Prov- erbs 5 v21) and "Nothing in the world can be hidden from God." (Hebrews 4 v.13 part). The Masked Singer may have been able to hide well, but how on earth the likes of Zorro and The Lone Ranger remained anon- ymous for so long is beyond me! God can easily identify each one of us and whilst we might be able to fool those around us, we cannot hide from God, so it really would be pointless in us trying to wear masks of any sort, physical or otherwise.

Until next time, keep well and safe. Mandy Thought for the month: "Don't confuse God's patience with his final response".

There is Another Sky,

Ever serene and fair, And there is another sunshine, Though it be darkness there; Never mind faded forests, Austin, Never mind silent fields - Here is a little forest, Whose leaf is ever green; Here is a brighter garden, Where not a frost has been; In its unfading flowers I hear the bright bee hum: Prithee, my brother, Into the garden I come!

Berriew Football Club announce new Reserve Team

The club are delighted to announce that James Langford and Dan Pritchard will lead our newly formed reserve team for the 2020/2021 season.

James is no stranger to the club, being from the village and having started his career at the club, with Dan also well known in Mid Wales football circles having previously ran reserves sides at and .

Langford said 'I am delighted to be returning to Berriew, the club that gave me my first taste of mens football. Coaching the Under 10's for the past two years has been thoroughly enjoyable, the clubs junior set up is impressive and a real asset to the development of the senior teams. On being approached to undertake the role, Dan and I were both immediately keen to get involved with us both knowing first hand the clubs standards and committee. We are incredibly grateful for the op- portunity and we are looking forward to the challenge ahead'

First Team Manager David Jones said 'Reforming a reserve team had been an ambition of the club for the last few years, and we are delighted that James and Dan have agreed to take on the role. The reserve team is the final link between the junior set up and the first team, with the club now boasting a sides for every age group from under 7's all the way up to the under 19's, reserves, and first team showing a clear pathway for players to progress right through to the senior side. Equally, a properly run and functioning reserve team is important to the strength of the first team as it allows those first team players in need of game time opportunity to get that, as well as being a platform for the youngsters to play regularly and improve'.

Message on card: Brynteg, Berriew. “Dear Aggie, I am not allowed to write letters. Douglas has diphtheria and Miss. Jones and I shan’t go to school until after the hols. We are not allowed to even go to the village nor to speak to anyone for 10 days, so we are in a fix. The only fear is of us getting it. He has been ill since Friday but only on Wednesday we knew it was diphtheria. We are simply miserable because we can’t go home. Write soon. Best Love. Berriew Show President’s Community Award

The Berriew Show Committee is pleased to launch the President’s Community Award 2020. This year has been unlike any other in living memory, and while it may be remembered for lockdown, social distancing and facemasks, it has also brought out the best in people. Stories abound of the lengths children and adults alike have gone to in order to minimise hardship, loneliness and isolation for those most in need. Open to any age, the Award will be given to the person who, in the opinion of the judges, has given selflessly to the community during 2020, by supporting individuals or groups in an extraordinary way. Nominations for the award are open now and will remain so until midnight on Wednesday 19th August 2020. The Show President and two other panellists will judge the nominations and award £100 for the winner to donate to a charity of their choice. The winner will also receive a trophy to keep. The nominee must live within the Berriew Electoral Ward and should, in the opinion of the nominator, have been a rock of support during 2020 by putting others before themselves through their skill, generosity, compassion or kindness. Nominations should be sent to [email protected] or posted to Mr W. Jones, Tanycoed, Felindre, Berriew, SY21 8BE and include: 1) The name of the nominator and contact details 2) The name of the nominee 3) A description in no more than 250 words of the reason for the nomination. The decision of the President and the judging panel will be final and will be announced on 29th August 2020, the date of the postponed show. In making this nomination you agree to The Show storing your details relating to this application. The winner will be consulted regarding their willingness to have their achievement publicised.

NATIONAL GARDEN SCHEME: POWYS GARDENS OPEN FOR CHARITY August 2020

Our gardens are open! From July some of our gardens re-opened albeit in a different format from previous years. I visited a garden in at the weekend having previously booked our tickets and time slot online. The new system is easy to use and works well. In our slot there were twelve other guests booked in and so social distancing was easy to manage. We were given a warm welcome by the garden owners who had time to chat with each of their visitors as they arrived. We spent an hour there at leisure enjoying the location, the planting and the sun! Of course the visit had a different feel about it with not being able to have refreshments but as of this week some gardens are able to offer drinks and cakes.

I know you will all remember the Sunday afternoon at the end of June last year when five beautiful gardens in Berriew opened together and raised over £3000 for our nursing and caring charities. An unbelievable amount of money raised in one afternoon and it made such a difference to our beneficiaries that include Macmillan, Marie Curie, Hospice UK, Parkinsons UK and Horatio’s Garden. We would love to have another village opening next year so please, if you think you could help and if you have a garden which is your pride and joy it will almost certainly be of interest to our visitors. Why not share it and help our fundraising for these very worthwhile charities. A group of five or six small gardens would make a lovely afternoon out. I know next year seems a long way off but we need to get the gardens registered by the end of September so talk to your friends and get in touch with our Count Organiser, Susan Paynton who lives near Berriew, either by email [email protected] or give her a ring on 01686 650531

There are a good number of gardens opening in Powys in August, visitors can check the website for details and you can book from the Monday prior to the garden opening. Some are selling plants, some will be offering refreshments and this is clearly stated for each garden.

** PLEASE NOTE, THE BERRIEW NEWSLETTER ONLY PRINTS DETAILS OF GARDENS OPEN WITHIN A 10-15 MILE RADIUS OF BERRIEW.

Gardens and dates: Caebardd, Guilsfield. 1st & 2nd August

Gardens that were due to open By Arrangement can now also reopen. Visitors should check which gardens are opening and contact the owner direct to arrange a visit. The website details are https://ngs.org.uk if you click on Garden Tickets you will be taken to the bookings page.

NGS and garden owners have worked together to ensure your safety and have calculated the number of visitors for each garden and set up time slots that allow you to enjoy the garden safely. Finally if any of you have a lovely garden that you would like to share next year, contact Susan Paynton, County Organiser by email susan.paynton@ngs .org.uk or call her on 01686 650531. Gardens need to be registered by the end of September.

Creaven, Mrs P J Hausman, Mrs S E O’Brien, Mrs S Rees, Mrs A Bright or Mr. N. Tuffin. Applications are open to all age groups who live within the parish and should be sent to Mrs. Lynda Evans, Fir Grove, Berriew, SY21 8AQ, Mobile – 07743 000 171 (Correspondent) for the consideration of the Trustees.

Thoughts of an older person.

Remember that we old folks are worth a fortune, with silver in our hair, gold in our teeth, stones in our kidneys, lead in our feet and gas in our stomachs.

While I have become a little older since I saw you Last, I have become quite a frivolous old gal, having two gentlemen with me all the time.

Will Power helps me get out of bed and Arthur Ritis never leaves me alone.

The Preacher came to call the other day, he said at my age I should be thinking of the hereafter.

I told him I do that all the time, no matter where I am. In the living room, the study, in the kitchen or upstairs, I always ask myself – “What am I hereafter?”

Thank you to all the advertisers who have renewed their adverts for the next 12 months and welcome to the new ones who have joined us. Unfortunately due to the ongoing circumstances we have sadly lost a few advertisers, and we hope they will be able to get their businesses operating again in the near future. We therefore have a few spaces available if anybody would like to advertise with us – contact details below.

Please continue to send in your old photographs, or details of any recent personal or club achievements, or events (now things are starting back up), either suitable for the front cover, or an article inside the Newsletter. We have some very talented people in and around Berriew – let us give them recognition for what they have achieved.

The closing date for the September Newsletter is Wednesday 19th August and it will be published on Friday 28th August.

Please note- all articles and correspondence left in the Newsletter Post Box must include a name and address and/or telephone number. Anonymous items will not be published.
