Little saints [primary aged folks] We had a wonderful ‘afloat’ time at Little saints in July. We heard the story of Jesus calming the storm and then acted it out – all having a go at being the different characters. Being the first Saturday of the holidays several folks had sent apologies as they were going off – hope you all had a great time! We had lots fishy things to do and enjoyed a favourite game – Ladders! Now looking forward to our summer fun ………………………….

Please note – the date is to be WEDNESDAY 31st August – the Old School not available on our previous date.

It is Olympic year – and we are 4 years old – it all began in 2012! So come along and win some medals! Bring a packed lunch and wear suitable shoes for running – in and out! We begin at 10.00am and finish at 3.00pm

Bring a friend – and please let us know you are coming!!

Hopefully there will be time for some craft too.Teen Seekers can come too and help as well as have some fun!

Teen Seekers: [Primary 6 and above] By the time you read this we shall have completed our next fundraiser. The Sponsored Hill Climb – to Rodney’s Pillar on 30th July; A report in our next newsletter – BUT – if you have not sponsored anyone we would be grateful for any gifts to boost the monies – Many thanks.- - and if you have sponsored please give the youngsters your promised cash!

On a quiet note – we were sad to lose young Christopher from our Little saints. His passing will be a great loss to us all. He loved to hear the noise especially any music – and always went home with some crafted goods. We offer our sympathy and prayers to the Jerman family at this time. BERRIEW BRASS BAND

I have just found a copy of a Solo Cornet March Book for BERRIEW BRASS BAND. Does anyone know anything about Berriew Brass Band please? I would be most interested to hear any details about it! Helen Bennett 01686 668 446 Email [email protected] Berriew Mothers’ Union Branch leader, Iris Tombs, welcomed everyone to our June meeting. She conducted a short service and prayers and then discussed the business for the month. A coffee morning for the Deanery Mothers’ Union was held in the Church House, Welshpool on Saturday 16th July with Joyce and Iris represented Berriew and the event raised £281:70. The summer outing is arranged for Wednesday 27th of July visiting Derwen Garden centre, , to view the plants with tea afterwards in the Restaurant. Iris and Joyce hope everyone will attend and have a pleasant afternoon. Iris introduced the speaker who was Mary Oldham, an authority on Margaret and Gwendoline Davies of Gregynog. She gave a fascinating talk and explained their early life and how they acquired such a wonderful collection of paintings which they eventually gave to the Welsh nation. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed such an interesting talk and hope Mary will return soon for the next instalment! She was thanked by Joyce Harrison. September 28th we welcome Rev’d Alex Mayes to talk to our Group and then in October Sue Blower the Montgomery Town Crier joins us. Everyone is very welcome to come along- give Mothers’ Union a try! PLUSH NIGHT AT THE ANDREW LOGAN MUSEUM ****Friday 19 August 2016**** THE ROY SAINSBURY ‘PLUSH JAZZ’ TRIO

Globally renowned guitarist Roy Sainsbury’s Plush Jazz Trio bring the summer season of jazz at the Andrew Logan Museum of Sculpture in Berriew to a close on Friday 19 August.

‘Roy Sainsbury is a superb world class guitarist, but more than this, he is a musician, he creates mu- sic … that often touches you with its beauty’ wrote Allen Johnson Jnr of Just Jazz Guitar USA.

Roy, joined by Charlie Wright on Tenor Sax and Simon Tebb on Double Bass, will use musical ar- rangements and variations on the classics of the great singers (Sinatra, Fitzgerald, Holliday, Tony Ben- nett for example), whilst respecting the melodies. The museum is thrilled to present the dextrous gui- tarist who has featured on Humphrey Lyttleton’s Jazz Notes and played with Scott Hamilton, Peanuts Hucko, Tommy White and Don Lusher, as well as Digby Fairweather and Alan Barnes.

Roy Sainsbury’s Plush Jazz Trio will play shortly after doors open at 8pm. Tickets are £15, and can be bought from the museum, Andrew Logan website (http://andrew- logan.myshopify.com/collections/tickets-for-events), or in person at R H Bunners, Montgomery.

Get connected Many of us rely on the internet for business, social and household activities such as banking, shopping and ordering prescriptions. We’re also using the internet to download or stream music, tv programmes and films with services such as BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime and Spotify increasingly popular.

The Berriew Community Council is taking a special interest in the rollout of Superfast Cymru, and although we have no power on the subject, we can influence, inform and involve. In connection with this, The Council and some members of the public recently heard a presentation by Martin Jones who is the BT Superfast Cymru Programme Manager. Martin informed the meeting of the current status of the rollout and was challenged by those present with regard to those premises currently not able to access superfast speeds. The main points were as follows:

BT’s ‘completion figures’ for Superfast Cymru are based on those properties which CAN access speeds in excess of 24 Mbps not those who DO! At the moment, 488 properties served from the Berriew exchange can access these speeds directly from the green roadside cabinet. However, only a very small number of people have signed up. It’s possible that users believe they will receive the higher speeds automatically whereas in fact they have to ‘place an order’. Search for the website ‘Sam Knows’ for more information. We will get more attention from BT to complete the rollout if more properties subscribe to a superfast service. Some outlying properties will not be able to get the faster service from the green cabinet and will have to wait for BT to provide fibre optic cable directly to their premises. Some such properties have already been identified. Some properties may not have the capability to access faster speeds at all, and this is of particular concern in our area. Search for Welsh Government Superfast Broadband to check current availability for your phone number.

The Community Council would like to monitor the rollout of Superfast Broadband from the Berriew Exchange, and in particular be able to present to BT the concerns of outlying communities or premises that are being left out. People affected in this way should contact the Council by sending an email to [email protected], stating their name, phone number and current internet speed along with a note of any communication with BT. (Ask a friend or relative to do this for you if you cannot access the internet at all!) We will compile this information and present it to BT in the coming months.

Minutes of the Open Meeting with Martin Jones have been published by the Council.

The Tom Cat Spot

Did you enjoy the mini heatwave in the middle of the month. It was very hot and humid, but the weeds kept growing. It was almost like going back 40 years to the summer of 1976,when it was very hot for a sustained period. The River Rhiew almost dried up and I remember helping the river bailiff transfer fish from stagnant pools, which the Rhiew had become, to the Severn River, not much more than a trickle itself. Good old 'Slippy' – none other than Mr. Eric Jones, Brynfa. A star in his own right. Well done Frances Hughes – first to name him correctly. Berriew show this month. Lots to prepare and enjoy. There are the usual classes and a few new ones for the budding cooks out there. Always a good day and I have said it before and I will say it again, we are fortunate to have a good team who organise and work hard to make the show the success it is. So to this months poser --- well there won't be one. I've enjoyed my little spot in the Newsletter, but it's now time to pass the pen and paper to someone else for their observations. Thank you to those of you who have shouted out answers to me. I thought my identity was a secret!!! Yeah for sure. As always keep smiling. Tom Cat signing off.

A big thank you to Tom Cat for his contributions over the past years. If there is anybody out there who would like to pick up the pen and paper for a similar slot then please contact me. Val Wallis/Editor
