Berriew Community and Youth Centre

Hello all. Just a few lines to update you on the activities and refurbishment plans for the Community Centre. In these challenging months ahead the Community Centre will still be available to be used for community activities, but these may be somewhat different to what has been traditionally hosted!

Though we are discouraging large gatherings we have not cancelled any events. Any cancellations or postponements are entirely at the discretion of the group or individuals booking or using the Centre – so if you are unsure if any event is going ahead please contact the organisers of the event, not the Centre or committee members.

We intend to keep the Centre open for as long as possible for use as a community facility and if anyone has any ideas or requests for ways that the Centre may be used to assist in meeting the challenge of this difficulty facing us, please get in touch with me and we can discuss.

Please also be assured that we have significantly scaled up the hygiene regime inside and outside the Centre in line with government and clinical recommendations.

Turning to future refurbishment plans, the Community Centre committee are still evaluating best ways to upgrade the Centre facilities to improve and increase community use while maintaining optimum facilities for our local school. We undertook a user engagement survey some time ago and are trying to incorporate as many of these “wish list” items into our upgrade plans. One area in particular is causing some logistical headaches and that is the problem of car parking. We are examining various options with Berriew School and the Community Council to increase, upgrade and improve parking safety and if we can resolve this then refurbishment works should follow soon after.

As always, any question or suggestions please give me or any member of the committee a call.

Regards and keep safe. Martin Creaven Community and Youth Centre Chairman [email protected]

Berriew Community and Youth Centre AGM

Please note the Community and Youth Centre AGM will be held on Tuesday 26th May 2020 (current Coronavirus situation notwithstanding). All user groups and members of the public are welcome and encouraged to attend to give your opinion on how we can improve our community facility and its management.

Please note that meetings of the Darby & Joan Club have been postponed until further notice. Mollie Evans.

Berriew Newsletter AGM.

The Newsletter AGM has been arranged for Monday 11th May at 7pm at the Refail Assembly Room. All members of the public are invited to attend. This meeting is of course subject to current restrictions and may have to be re-arranged.

Our New Vicar

Hello. My name is Caroline Rhodes and I am really pleased to have been appointed as the new Vicar of Berriew, Fron & Pantyffridd, in addition to and , where I’ve been vicar since June 2015. I’m looking forward to getting to know you all, and thought you might appreciate a bit of an introduction to me. I grew up in Gillingham, Kent, then studied pharmacy at the University of Bath in the mid 80s. I spent a training year working in a children’s hospital, and then worked as a pharmacist, starting in hospitals in Gt Yarmouth and Norwich, and then moving to retail pharmacy in working Norwich, Coalville, Ashby de la Zouch and Tutbury. I spent two years training at Ripon College Cuddesdon and then served my curacy at St Edmund’s Allestree and St Matthew’s Darley Abbey, on the northern edge of Derby which I enjoyed enormously. I then spent nine months working in the Wirksworth team ministry, helping out in a team that covers one small market town and nine villages in the Peak District, while the team vicar was on sick leave. That helped me (a suburbanite) to develop an understanding of the ‘rootedness’ of the small rural communities, and the sense of generations belonging to a place. I now live in the vicarage at Guilsfield with my husband Geoff, who works as an architectural technician for a company based in Hereford. He was home working before it became all the rage. We don’t have any children. I enjoy in a number of crafts (which I am not necessarily very good at!) and find that a good way to explore how we relate to our God who is a Creator through expressing our own creativity. I am also interested in the links between physical and spiritual health and well being, and enjoy leading healing services and quiet days.

I hate having to commence ministering in Berriew with the sad news that in order to take seriously Jesus’ command to love our neighbours as ourselves, and to protect everyone from the possibilities of infection with corona virus we have to suspend all public worship services in church until further notice, in line with government advice and Church in instructions. For the foreseeable future funerals will be conducted only at the graveside or crematorium. Bereaved families will obviously be welcome to hold memorial services in church, once normality has returned. In the meantime the church building remains open daily, for people to enjoy the peace and beauty and pray. We are not able to disinfect the door handles if that bothers you please wear gloves or bring a hankie to separate your hand from the door. There are booklets of a simple service of morning prayer to say at home, and bookmarks with a prayer for all affected by Corona Virus and some comforting bible verses- please help yourselves, and join with the congregation saying morning prayer together, but dispersed in our armchairs, each Sunday at 10am.

I was really surprised when I saw on the news last night how much difference the experts think these very significant inconveniences may make. They are hoping that these actions of self- isolation by all those requested to do so, and the rest of us “socially distancing” from one another can reduce the number of people who die from Covid-19 from about 250000 to 20000- that’s saving 230000 lives, so please take the experts advice very seriously and comply.

Why not use this enforced slow-down to do some of those things that you’ve been promising yourself one day, when I’ve got the time I will paint, knit, crochet, Lino-print, finish (!) your model railway, grow the perfect tomato, read War & Peace. When this is over we’ll have a Post Pandemic Party and arrange an exhibition in church of all of the things the people of Berriew have created during this time (or photos of anything that gets eaten or can’t be brought into church like gardens in full bloom)

We have a new Facebook page, “St Beuno’s Church Berriew” which I’m hoping to use to keep in touch. I’ve seen enough of this community already to know that you will care for one another through this. My phone number is 01938 554245. Do call (preferably between 9am and 9pm) if you want a chat.

We face this together trusting and hoping in God, beginning and ending in prayer

Loving God, source of healing and comfort, fill us with your grace, that the sick may be made whole, that those who care for us may be strengthened, that the anxious may be calmed, and those most vulnerable be protected in the power of Spirit in the faith of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Yours in Christ Caroline

Vicar of Berriew, Buttington, Fron, Guilsfield, and Pantyffridd. [email protected]

BERRIEW WI

Berriew WI met on Wednesday March 4th at the Bowling Club, when 18 members were present, and Hazel, our newest member was welcomed.

Speaker for the evening was Lori Whinn, who spoke about her local chocolate-making enterprise, Coco Pzazz. When the brand was initially being developed, she exhibited at a trade fair in London, where both John Lewis and the National Trust quickly placed orders. The chocolate, mostly giant buttons and bars, is made in a small factory at , and is sold in farm shops and delis. The company uses Welsh artists for packaging, and depends on renewable energy only. It is committed to protecting and respecting the environment, and tries to behave ethically in its dealings with producers. Brightly-coloured cocoa beans were handed around to members for inspection. They are produced in the Tropical Belt, mostly on small- holdings in poor areas. Coco Pzazz supports a community in rural Ghana, and gives micro-loans to a plantation in Equador, reflecting their ethos of ‘giving something back’. Members then participated in an enjoyable tasting quiz, when they were invited to guess the sugar or cocoa content of samples. Lori was thanked for a most entertaining presentation.

Refreshments were served by Mary and Sue Usmar, Jill Sadler won the raffle, and the quiz, set by Ann Markwicke, was won by Catriona, with Gill Evans, Sue Usmar and Sue Miniken joint seconds, with Ferol third.

The meeting ended with members in good voice, singing the Welsh National Anthem, ably led by Joyce Harrison.

Leave Winter behind and enjoy a great day’s motoring --- with a twist!

The third Village Vaynor is planned for Sunday May 17th. Enjoy a circa 100 mile route through wonderful countryside with just ‘a taste’ of the disciplines of road rallying.

Morning coffee, lunch and afternoon tea for two plus Route Book, Trophies and a momento for just £65.00!

Entry forms available from John Greenslade ([email protected]) or Tony Rogers ([email protected]) and they are also available in the Lion Hotel or at the Talbot.

All surplus funds will be donated to our Air Ambulance and local Marie Curie Nurses.

Editor’s Postscript

The closing date for the May Newsletter is Wednesday 15th April and it will be published on Friday 24th April. Unfortunately, we have had to postpone the Newsletter Annual Fundraiser which was to have taken place in April, as have many others with events planned in the next couple of months. We hope we may be able to hold the event later in the year, but like everyone else we will have to wait and see. If anyone would like to give a donation to the Newsletter in the meantime, it can be safely left in the Newsletter Post Box in Berriew Stores, or forwarded to our Treasurer. Mrs. Pat Hall, or to me, Val Wallis, Cae Higgin, Pantyffridd, Berriew, SY21 8BH. Please continue to send in your old photographs, or any of recent personal or club achievements, or events, either suitable for the front cover, or an article for inside the Newsletter. We have some very talented people in and around Berriew – let us give them some recognition for what they have achieved.

Don’t forget you can advertise items for sale in the Newsletter for £1 donation per item.

Finally my best wishes to everyone to keep safe and well and follow the guidelines given to try to combat this nasty virus.

Please note – all articles and correspondence left in the Newsletter Post Box must include a name and address and/or telephone number. Anonymous items will not be published.
