BERRIEW WI

Berriew WI visited Newtown Textile Museum on the evening of May 2nd. Twenty one members and guests were welcomed and given an introductory talk in the cobbled yard, before exploring the exhibits spread over four floors. The museum is comprised of six back-to-back cottages, where looms occupied the top two floors, well-lit buy large windows, and the lower two, which provided living accommodation for the workers and their families. The weavers life was harsh and grim, children as young as four were expected to contribute, in some way, to the arduous work. Over eighty similar blocks had been built as hand-loom factories in Newtown in the in the 1830’s. Previously weaving had been a cottage industry, but the invention of the Spinning Jenny had meant that wool could be spun in larger quantities.

Videos, pictures, photographs, spinning wheels and looms told the story of fleece to flannel and linked it to the industrial development of Newtown, aided by the building of the canal and later of the railways. Printed material related to Chartist activity in the town, the location of the first Chartist demonstration in .

It was a most enlightening visit, after which the evening was rounded off by a convivial meal at a The Elephant and Castle, much enjoyed by all.

Newsletter Fundraiser 2019

The Newsletter committee would like to thank everyone who supported our Fundraiser at the Community Centre on 27th April. The amount raised on the day was £1019.24.

Thank you to all the associations, churches and chapels who manned stalls, to Pantyffridd and the Fron churches who organised the two raffles, to everyone who donated raffle prizes, to the Young Farmers for supplying and serving refreshments – including lovely cakes, to everyone who donated items for us to sell and all those who came and supported the event and bagged a few bargains. Thanks also to all those who gave us generous donations on the day. Thank you all for your generosity and time – without your help there wouldn’t be a Berriew Newsletter.

Congratulations to Deb & Rod who won the meal for two at the Talbot, donated by Berriew Bowling Club – this was announced a few days after the fundraiser, once the draw sheet had been filled. Val Wallis.

Note from the Treasurer

The committee are very grateful for all donations and we hope to use them efficiently and economically to keep up the news service to Berriew. We would like to thank an anonymous donor, Mr. & Mrs. P. Evans and Mrs. Simpson for their donations and Mrs. I. Young for donation and stamps and everyone who gave donations at the Fundraiser sale. The annual fundraiser sale on 27th April raised: On the day Stalls £ 794.24 On the day Donations £ 225.00 Donations since £ 25.00 Total £1044.24

Mrs. P. Hall Treasurer.

Would you consider volunteering to be the next Berriew Newsletter Treasurer?

I am an incomer. I moved here 18 years ago. Within a week of arriving I volunteered to be secretary of the Berriew WI who were desperate for someone to volunteer. The essence of being part of a community is helping that community to thrive. When I moved here from a city I commented to someone ‘what will I do with myself in the evenings’. “I assure you, you will have so many options of things to do your time will be filled” I was told. And sure enough very quickly I discovered there was a plethora of organisations with opportunities to become involved. But the key is to become involved. Without volunteers to run all of the many activities, they will simply die, leaving, in particular, an aging population, in this rural area, without any way to communicate with people other than their close neighbours and relatives. Did you know that the Berriew newsletter goes out to well over 500 people? It is one of the most successful of the newsletters in , providing information and news, and supporting local businesses with exceptionally inexpensive advertising. However, the newsletter is essentially run by Val and Barry Wallis (There is also a committee that meets two or three times a year for an hour a time). Val and Barry spend many hours every month collecting and setting the content, then printing the Newsletter before packing and distributing (here they are helped by Pat and David Hall). They trouble shoot problems and organise fund raising (the costs of production are considerable). For them it is the equivalent of running a small business, but without any financial benefits. Pat Hall is the treasurer – a vital part of any committee. She was asked to ‘hold the fort for a couple of months’ and agreed. That was 20 years ago. She is retiring this year. We will have no treasurer. With no treasurer there will be no legitimate committee and thus no organisation to provide the Newsletter. This valuable resource will be lost. We really do have no excuse. I run a business and work a minimum of 10 hours a day 7 days a week. I am an active volunteer for three organisations despite this. We can all make time, yet we can’t find someone to give up a few hours of the 8,760 hours each of us have in our year. Why not? If you ever read the newsletter (and 500 people obviously do) then perhaps you would like to volunteer for this job, or may know someone who would do it! P.

Creating vibrancy in the garden.

So where do we begin? I decided to begin with looking at the definitions of create and vibrancy.

CREATE: the verb created, creating - to cause to come into being, as something unique that would not naturally evolve or that is not made by ordinary processes. It goes on to say - to evolve from one's own thoughts or imagination, as a work of art or invention.

VIBRANCY: The Oxford dictionary says of vibrancy - 'the state of being full of energy and life' 'striking brightness of colour' 'strength and resonance of sound'; granted the latter is referring to the vibrancy of voice that fills the room! But who is to say that plants do not have a vibrancy of sound? On a windy day when trees can be heard like crashing waves on rocks or the breeze through grasses in a rhythm of meditation.

Let’s take on board those meanings and translate it into the garden. I hold the view that whatever is created has been done so from the imagination, whether that be your own, although sometimes we might feel it doesn't quite hit the mark and I put that down to skill and confidence which comes through practice. We might copy another person’s idea only because we haven’t tuned into our creative self.

The elements that bring a garden or border together can be in the form of innate objects such as sculptures, walls, trellis and garden furniture; as well as living elements such as tree, shrubs and perennials. With technology today, one doesn't even have to have living plants to create a garden with vibrancy, I remember several years ago a garden featuring at Chelsea with artificial flowers!

If we think of the garden being a series of layers which provide dimension and interest our plant layers need to be considered. Tree in general are the tallest layer, that offer height, movement, sound and shape. Some interesting trees to consider Acer griseum, Betula ermanii, Cryptomeria japonica, Eucryphia nymansensis ‘Nymansay’, Ginkgo biloba and Nothofagus antartica.

The next layer we would introduce into our garden scheme are shrubs. With shrubs I feel it's more about texture and shape and often I find dense thick evergreen shrubs filling garden spaces and growing into dominant Masses or blocks. To keep your garden borders open and airy avoid using plants like Aucuba japonica, Berberis varieties, Eleagnus varieties and Photinia ‘Red Robin’. Instead use plants like Other great choices include Choisya ternata; Ceanothus and their many varieties; Pipthantus nepaulensis, Carpenteria californica 'Bodnant'; Calycanthus 'Aphrodite' known as Allspice. It would be remiss of me to not include Crinodendron hookerianum; Clerodendron trichotomum or Fatsia japonica!

The lower layers of the garden come in the form of perennials, ground cover plants and bulbs. Throughout this layer we would be aiming to using plants which provide colourful interest either through the flowers or foliage. The perennials are what I class as herbaceous, biennials, annuals and bulbs. These plants and can be produce woody or soft growth during the season. You can use perennials to create ribbons or blocks of colour through your borders.

Coverage of the ground is important if you want to reduce your time spent weeding! The idea partner plants are those which are good at covering the ground, some great examples include evergreens such as Geranium macrorrhizum, Bergenia varieties, Euphorbia robbiae, Heuchera varieties and even short grasses such as Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’. as this is a method that is used for low maintenance and weed prevention.

In a nutshell creating vibrancy within your garden comes from the imagination and experimenting with a variety of plants which will provide you with layers that offer movement, sound, texture, colour and interest throughout the year.

Speed on the B4390 – Road.

When we received the Community Council minutes for the June Newsletter, we were delighted to see that a complaint had been sent about the speed of traffic between Berriew and Manafon.

We also feel the speed limit needs to be reduced in Pantyffridd – and speaking to other residents we have found many feel the same.

The volume of traffic using the B4390 has increased substantially in the time we have been living in Pantyffridd. Villages such as and Adfa have increased in size, meaning more traffic comes this way. Some of the caravan parks have increased in size, therefore more traffic and there are a lot more HGV’s and caravan transporters coming through. On a B road that in places is quite narrow and has a significant number of bends, a 60 mile an hour limit is far too high. In fact we see a number of vehicles travelling at speeds well over 60 miles an hour. Between Berriew and Pantyfridd the high speed people are travelling at means they are cutting bends, and we are always meeting vehicles way over the white line on our side of the road – it has become a very dangerous road. We can check the road is clear as we exit our drive, (and I know others have the same problem) but within 10 yards we can have someone right behind us, impatiently trying to overtake – because they are travelling at such high speed. If you have a roadside verge to maintain – you take your life in your hands, because vehicles don’t slow down as they pass - they are still doing 60.

We also have a lot of walkers and cyclists using this route and I am amazed that as yet there hasn’t been a fatality.

We would like to approach the Community Council with this problem, so if you feel as we do that the speed limit should be reduced please send your details and views to us and we will collate the information and take it to the Community Council. The next Council meeting is June 13th and it would be good to get all the information to that meeting.

The Most Unsuccessful T.V. Commercial

The comedienne Pat Coombs is the proud holder of the record for the largest number of unsuccessful ‘takes’ for a television commercial. In 1973, while making a breakfast cereal advertisement, she forgot her lines twenty-eight times. On each occasion she forgot the same thing – the name of the product. When asked five years later what the product was, she replied: ‘I still can’t remember. It was some sort if muesli, but the name was practically unpronounceable. They were very kind to me, but that only made it worse. I had total stage- fright every time the camera came near me. With each take I got worse. It’s put me off cereal for life.’

The commercial was never finished and the product was taken off the market soon afterwards.
