1 Introduction

Red Rock is located 115 kilometers east of Thunder Bay and 8 kilometres south of the Trans- Highway. The name is inspired by the unique red coloured cliff faces of the Red Rock Hills that are visible when accessing the town via Highway 11/17. Though only incorporated as a Town in the 1980s, the area has a rich and storied history.

Historically, early settlers recognized the potential of the location for trade and the first trading post was established in the region in the 1680’s. The area was became an important source for the . In the 1930's the area that would become Red Rock was carved from the forest at the edge of to access the region’s rich natural resources as the local mill was constructed. Red Rock was home to a large Prisoner of War camp during the Second World War. In 1945, the Improvement District of Red Rock was incorporated and the first board was appointed.

To this day, Red Rock still boasts an advantageous strategic location. Shipping options exist along highway 11/17, the northernmost deep water is under development, the town is close in proximity to Thunder Bay’s airport, and there is rail access. It remains an ideal site for transportation, logistics and trade networking. The town has retained its rugged natural beauty and actively promotes recreational activities at its beautiful waterfront and thriving marina.
