page 6, The Oliver Paipoonge News, August 2021 No “Horsing Around” ~ Become a Part of our History! There once was Horse, who resided at Prouse’s Leather & Harness Shop in Fort William Ontario. This business was well known to all, and was a favourite stop when people came to town for provisions. Remember now, this was before the automobile, so would be in the early 20th century. The visit to town would be enjoyed by the whole family, especially the children. The favourite stop was at the Prouse Shoppe. There was one very special reason that the children would ask to go there first. They wanted to visit “The Horse”. The horse was usually inside the store, and was used as a “Harness Model”. But on the weekend, Mr. Prouse stood him outside on the wooden sidewalk. This was a creative marketing ploy by Mr. Prouse, that no doubt helped with sales. Kids would get to sit up on the saddled horse...perhaps even a photo taken. Not everyone would have owned a camera, but there was Kodak Pocket Model to be had. If not a photo, a memory was sure good enough. Imagine the thrill of the trip to town. The “Famous Horse” was eventually donated to the Duke Hunt Museum. This life size horse is definitively a part of our history. He is now located in the Slate River Hall, at Pioneer Village. The Duke Hunt Museum is under relocation to this site. We are asking some Special Person, to assist us in creating an authentic looking enclosure for this horse. He is in a corner spot, so it would only need to be 2-sided. We do not want him to get loose! If you volunteer to create this “Special Place”, you will be made part of the history. Your name will be on a plaque on the outside of the enclosure. I know there are many creative residents out there, with some old barn board lying around and a lot of “know- how”. Be as creative as you like. Your interest in this project would be so welcome.
