PROPOSED ALTERNATE VOTING METHODS FOR MUNICIPAL ELECTION

For the 2022 Election Council is considering changing the voting method. More and more municipalities in Ontario are using online voting coupled with telephone voting rather than the traditional paper-based voting. Online and telephone voting are considered to be more convenient for voters and thereby can increase voter turnout.

Some municipalities use vote by mail but use of this voting method is declining since it is considered to be cumbersome and expensive. The Municipality is not looking at that option.

While people generally use their own computers or smart- phones to vote online, both advance and election day polls are set up to allow people to vote there. Help is available for people who are unfamiliar with technology at the polls. As well, people can use their landline phones to vote.

More information about the proposal to adopt alternate vot- ing methods can be obtained from the Municipality’s website or by calling the municipal office @ 935-2613.

Over the next 3 months Council is looking for input from resi- dents on the proposal to adopt online and telephone voting. You may submit your comments in writing by dropping them off at the municipal office, mailing them or emailing them. Below are the addresses for comment submission:

The Oliver Paipoonge News, February 2021!, page 7 Beyond Books: Provincial State of Emergency Your Library - Making a Difference Declared submitted by Beverly Ball on behalf of the Oliver Paipoonge Library Board Stay-at-Home Order Deanine Bakker is a busy mother of four young children and an educator. She has spent her entire life in the community of Oliver Paipoonge with the exception of two years, where she moved to Northern to start a teaching career. She now teaches in our community. Deanine is an avid user of both branches of the Library. She loans books and material that interest her and in particular enjoys historical books. When specific books that interest Deanine have not been available, staff at the Library take the extra time and always manage to seek out what she is looking for. Her children also use the Library – they enjoy taking out books and movies and especially enjoy season material. Deanine mentioned that the staff at the Library are very helpful and patient during this process of having the children select their cher- ished materials to bring home.
