Cars Not Moving ƕ The system count of cars not moving increased yesterday for the second straight day climbing to their highest single day total in more than a month at more than 2,200 cars. ƕ The increase yesterday reflects higher counts on both CN and CP with the increase seen on CP doubling that seen on CN. Two days of increasing counts results in this week's levels currently tracking 23% higher than at this point last week. Port Unloads ƕ West coast unloads (1,175) rebounded yesterday reflecting improved unloads at both west coast ports. Thunder Bay unloads remain robust exceeding 450 cars yesterday. System counts have now returned above 2,200 cars the highest level in more than a month. The net change on CN yesterday (+ 167 cars) reflects principally higher counts in the Prince Rupert corridor for the third straight day which now exceed 500 cars - the highest single day total in six weeks. Nearly all idle cars in the Prince Rupert corridor as of midnight last night are dwelling at origin locations. The net change on CP yesterday (+ 381 cars) reflects principally higher counts in the Thunder Bay and Vancouver corridors. At just under 1,100 cars the number of idle cars on the CP system has risen to the highest level in more than three weeks. The concentration of cars dwelling under load at CP's Coquitlam Yard rose slightly yesterday and now sits at 166 cars. This number has consistently been between 150 and 400 cars on a daily basis for much of the last three weeks. 24 Hour Change Eastern Canada USA / MEX Thunder Bay Western Canada Prince Rupert Vancouver Total CN Prior Day 99 78 57 337 381 952 Current Day 93 95 47 518 366 1,119 Net Change -6 17 -10 181 -15 167 CP Prior Day 13 29 197 434 673 Current Day 13 17 390 634 1,054 Net Change 0 -12 193 200 381 Percent Loads Not Moving Eastern Canada USA / MEX Thunder Bay Western Canada Prince Rupert Vancouver Total CN Prior Day 15% 23% 9% 18% 11% 14% Current Day 14% 39% 7% 28% 11% 16% CP Prior Day 33% 35% 10% 0% 14% 13% Current Day 20% 9% 23% 0% 22% 22% AG TRANSPORT COALITION 7 2020-10-19 Daily Network Status Report (As of 23:59) 2020-10-19 Current Day Status - Network Location Eastern Canada USA / MEX Thunder Bay Western Canada Prince Rupert Vancouver Total CN Origin 36 6 507 254 803 Enroute 33 82 9 48 172 Destination Yard 18 5 1 56 80 Destination (Placed) 6 7 42 1 8 64 CP Origin 4 1 166 332 503 Enroute 1 14 2 133 150 Destination Yard 1 2 210 166 379 Destination (Placed) 7 12 3 22 Percent Loads Not Moving Eastern Canada USA / MEX Thunder Bay Western Canada Prince Rupert Vancouver Total CN Origin 30% 86% 0% 62% 28% 41% Enroute 11% 46% 0% 1% 3% 5% Destination Yard 29% 0% 6% 100% 11% 11% Destination (Placed) 3% 21% 29% 1% 4% 9% CP Origin 14% 1% 43% 0% 33% 33% Enroute 4% 18% 0% 0% 11% 8% Destination Yard 100% 67% 26% 0% 33% 29% Destination (Placed) 78% 0% 22% 0% 2% 10% AG TRANSPORT COALITION 8 2020-10-19 Daily Network Status Report (As of 23:59) 2020-10-19 Network Breakdown The percent of loads on wheels not moving today has jumped for CP reflecting the higher count of idle cars and lower loads on wheels. CN's ratio remains stable at last week's levels. This metric can be volatile on a daily basis and as such a better guage of system performance is the weekly trend. Prince Rupert reported more than 200 unloads yesterday for the first time in three days. While the Port seemingly did not have sufficient cars on hand beginning the day yesterday CN delivered more than 200 cars to the Port yesterday resulting in the improved unload performance. As of midnight last night there were fewer than 150 cars on site available for unloading and only 250 cars west of Jasper enroute to the Port. The most current data as of this morning indicates that CN has spotted an additional train since midnight which should position the Port for 200+ unloads today. The pipeline in total remains robust with 1,600+ cars on line as of this morning with roughly half enroute and half dwelling at origin locations. Unloads at the Port of Vancouver improved yesterday but remained below 1,000 cars for the second straight day. Vancouver corridor volumes have been declining steadily over the last week and declined again yesterday. After averaging more than 7,400 cars per day Oct. 4-13 daily loads on wheels have declined steadily to their current level of 6,300 cars. As of midnight last night there were fewer than 1,500 cars in the Vancouver terminal available for unloading and fewer than 500 cars Kamloops and west destined to the Port. Thunder Bay continues its strong unload performance reporting 454 unloads yesterday - above 300 cars for the 12th time in the last 15 days. Corridor volumes remain strong at more than 2,300 cars today. As of midnight last night there were more than 1,000 cars on site and 600+ east of Winnipeg.
