Since my retirement several years ago and hence no longer responsible for conducting a weekly 6.00pm Sunday evensong in one of our churches, I have become infatuated by a regular viewing of BBC 1’s “Countryfile” which I know that several of you are, too. You may remember, therefore, a recent viewing of a programme focusing upon the preservation of natural meadowland. From that we were told that wildflower meadows are now one of the rarest grassland types in the UK and, filled with wild grass and flower species, are providing a much-needed haven for wildlife including a whole range of butterfly and insect species some of which are now much threatened. I found this a particularly inspiring episode especially in viewing a number of farmers, like Adam Henson, who are now preserving field strips to see how they can continue to farm whilst supporting the environment. Even more inspiring, then, was my recent conversation with our neighbours Patrick and Elizabeth STEPHEN MARTIN Coles of Hawthorns Farm. A broad strip of field behind my house General Builder on which Patrick used to graze his sheep or harvest for feeding Experienced Plasterer cattle he has now left to grow and which is already attracting a House Painter new variety of flora and fauna. When he told me that this had been quite deliberate on his part I was so delighted and asked if he Fensa Registered would be happy for me to report it as I am doing here.
