  • • Knowing Our Boundaries • Keen Eyes at Old Kea
1 AN UPDATE FROM CORNWALL ARCHAEOLOGICAL SOCIETY’S AREA REPRESENTATIVES Any opinions or errors in these articles are those of the authors and must not be assumed to be those of Cornwall Archaeological Society. JUNE 2019 Issue 31 This month: KNOWING OUR BOUNDARIES KEEN EYES AT OLD KEA PAINTING WHITECROSS NEWS FROM PENWITH DISPATCHES FROM VICE-ADMIRAL COLLINGWOOD KERDROYA BROADCAST FROM BODMIN STOP PRESS: APPEAL FOR INFORMATION!!!! KNOWING OUR BOUNDARIES Rosy Hanns has immersed herself in a massive endeavour to plot and record the numerous boundary stones in Cornwall. No doubt many of us have stumbled across (or even over) these mysterious objects while out and about and have wondered what the letters carved on them once signified. Though not the most impressive of features, they may indicate estate ownership or parish or other boundaries, and therefore help to tell the story of local land-use, social structures and power at the time of their placement. Rosy has sent in photographs of stones she has discovered around Treslea Downs in Cardinham and Warleggan parishes. The map below shows various stones plotted in 1881; now Rosy is recording these in order to inform Cornwall Council’s Historic Environment record (which can be found at https://www.cornwall.gov.uk/community-and-living/mapping/). 2 Treslea Downs from the 1881 Ordnance Survey Six- inch to the mile map XXVII.SW. Reproduced with the permission of the National Library of Scotland https://maps.nls.uk/copyright.html Spotting these stones on old maps is one thing; actually finding them on the ground is something else, as Rosy has found.

We started on Monday with the brilliant news that over £413.50 was raised by the PTA on our Festive Friday. Thank you to all of the organisers and everyone who supported the event. On Wednesday we had the Christingle Service which was absolutely lovely - thanks again to Father Stewart, Mrs Micklem and all of the Year 6 readers. Many thanks also for the donations for the Children’s Society. Christmas Lunch was once again delicious – an epic achievement by Jasmin and Anna in the kitchen. As ever the KS1 Nativity performances were absolutely magical – well done to all of the KS1 staff involved and particularly Mr Anjari for scripting and leading rehearsals. The children performed superbly and really spread the Christmas spirit. Today everyone has been wearing Christmas jumpers to raise money for Save the Children. I know all of the donations will be very gratefully received. So here I am writing my last newsletter at Constantine School.

112 CONSTANTINE PARISH COUNCIL C.F.P.Chapman Clerk to the Council Chy Lean St Keverne Road Mawgan Helston TR12 6AY telephone 01326 221648 [email protected] Minutes of the Ordinary Meeting of Constantine Parish Council held on Thursday July 17, 2008 at 7.00pm in The Vestry, Constantine. Present: Cllr P.C.Carter (Chairman) Cllr M.J.Reynolds Cllr A.H.Bolt Cllr R.J.Williams Cllr K.Cavanagh Cllr N.J.Wiseman Cllr D.Cummins Cllr C.Gray Mr C.Chapman (Clerk) Visitors: CCCllr N.Hatton, KDCllr Sadler, Mr B.Mynett and Mr D.Thompson. The Chairman welcomed members and visitors to the meeting. PUBLIC QUESTION TIME It was noted that • vehicles thoughtlessly parked near the Church entrance in Bowling Green Road may cause an obstruction which, in the case of an emergency, may prove fatal. It was agreed that the Parish Council should place a ‘No Parking’ notice on the wall opposite • vehicles are being parked at right-angles to the kerb at the top of Well Lane which can be hazardous: it was thought that a better solution might be to park in a herring-bone fashion. The Clerk was asked to liaise with County Highways about the matter • there is considerable alarm about proposals to repair Port Navas Quay which is a listed building. A persistent rumour suggests that the surface will be repaired using concrete rather than replacing the stone sets. It was noted that any repair will need Listed Building Consent • the speed of potato lorries through the village and the recent accident was the cause of much concern.
