The quay was already built before 1870; in the building of this, a granite block was placed in a prominent position with the following words taken from Psalm 127: ‘Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it.’ The 3’ x 12” x 18” stone was originally set into the seaward wall in the lower quay. After one of the great storms, the wall and the block collapsed into the sea. The granite block, lettered in lead, was recovered and set into the newer wall nearby. From Anne Forrest.
