    MORWENNA MORRISON Arusha Gallery | [email protected] | 0131 557 1412 BIOGRAPHY Morwenna Morrison's predominantly oil on canvas works draw influence from a carefully curated collage of archival images. Morrison explains her work as being ‘an analysis of today’s social, psychological and political issues, set within historical context’. Taking as a base the salubrious works of historical landscape painting, the artist interweaves contemporary consumerist images into her painting. In doing so, the viewer is invited to nostalgically embrace the cultural mythos of the classical, neo-classical or Romantic. Morrison establishes a sort of narrative continuum between a world of commercial flight and the colonial verandas of the 19th century (‘n Infinite Summer), presenting her new historicism in beautiful, aesthetic calmness. Morwenna Morrison is based in Penzance. A graduate of the Exeter College of Art and Design’s Fine Art programme (1988), she has exhibited extensively across the UK as both a solo artist and a contributor to group shows. It comprises mainly a dolerite altered by low grade metamorphism with minor Upper Devonian Mylor Slates, all within the aureole of the Lands End Granite. It contains also two distinct phases of later base metal mineralisation. The quarry is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its mineralisation and several of these features are suitable for conservation. Quarry development started in the late 1880s at the northern end as a hillside operation advancing to the west and subsequently south. The impact of geological features and related geotechnical constraints have had a significant affect on subsequent quarry development. The rock has a high density and for England, an exceptionally high compressive strength. Workings ceased in the early 1990s due to a combination of problems relating to access and transport and to its unsuitability for road surfacing owing to its low PSV. In 1999, planning permission was obtained for revised conditions that permitted the further extraction of 28Mt of rock extending to a depth of 100m below sea level. In practice, constraints arising from meeting the requirements of the Quarry Regulations 1999, mean that little of this tonnage is recoverable.

    MINING THE DATA: WHAT CAN A QUANTITATIVE APPROACH TELL US ABOUT THE MICRO-GEOGRAPHY OF NINETEENTH CENTURY CORNISH MINING? Bernard Deacon (in Philip Payton (ed.), Cornish Studies Eighteen, University of Exeter Press, 2010, pp.15-32) For many people the relics of Cornwall’s mining heritage – the abandoned engine house, the capped shaft, the re-vegetated burrow – are symbols of Cornwall itself. They remind us of an industry that dominated eighteenth and nineteenth century Cornwall and that still clings on stubbornly to the margins of a modern suburbanised Cornwall. The remains of this once thriving industry became the raw material for the successful World Heritage Site bid of 2006. Although the prime purpose of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site team is to promote the mining landscapes of Cornwall and west Devon and the Cornish mining ‘brand’, the WHS website also recognises the importance of the industrial and cultural landscapes created by Cornish mining in its modern historical phase from 1700 to 1914.1 Ten discrete areas are inscribed as world heritage sites, stretching from the St Just mining district in the far west and spilling over the border into the Tamar Valley and Tavistock in the far east. However, despite the use of innovative geographic information system mapping techniques, visitors to the WHS website will struggle to gain a sense of the relative importance of these mining districts in the history of the industry. Despite a rich bibliography associated with the history of Cornish mining the historical geography of the industry is outlined only indirectly.2 The favoured historiographical approach has been to adopt a qualitative narrative of the relentless cycle of boom and bust in nineteenth century Cornwall.
