Earth Pigments in St. Ives, Cornwall September 4 – 12 2020 Come and Paint in St Workshops in Wild Places GATHERING AND PAINTING WITH Earth Pigments in St. Ives, Cornwall September 4 – 12 2020 Come and paint in St. Ives! In this inspiring new offering from Workshops in Wild Places, we’ll travel to Cornwall to meet environmental artist, Pete Ward. For two days, from our base in St. Ives, Pete will take us to sites in the countryside to gather various colours of natural earth pigments. On another day, he’ll teach us how to process these pigments into paint. This area is riddled with archaeological sites and on our out-trips, Pete will also take us to visit some megalithic sites. We’ll follow this experience with a 5-day painting workshop with Janice, using the prepared earth pigments. Our hotel is in the historic village of St. Ives, home to the St Ives School, which became a centre for modern and abstract developments in British art from the 1940s to the 1960s. West Cornwall’s special quality of light has drawn painters to St Ives since the beginning of the nineteenth century but it was the extension of the Great Western Railway to West Cornwall in 1877, which eased access to the remote town, making St Ives even more appealing as a destination for artists. During the workshop, we’ll be able to visit the Tate St Ives, the Barbara Hepworth Sculpture Park, and the Bernard Leach Pottery, all located in St Ives. As well as finding inspiration from the artists, both contemporary and historic who lived and worked in this small Cornish village, this workshop focuses on deeply connecting with the land through the collection and processing of earth pigments. TOUR LEADER Janice Mason Steeves is represented by galleries in TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS BY: Canada and the U.S., with work in public, corporate, and private collections in Canada and internationally. As well as an active one-on-one Art Mentoring program, Janice teaches painting workshops in Canada, the U.S., and Europe. • Morwenna Morrison CV
MORWENNA MORRISON Arusha Gallery | [email protected] | 0131 557 1412 BIOGRAPHY Morwenna Morrison's predominantly oil on canvas works draw influence from a carefully curated collage of archival images. Morrison explains her work as being ‘an analysis of today’s social, psychological and political issues, set within historical context’. Taking as a base the salubrious works of historical landscape painting, the artist interweaves contemporary consumerist images into her painting. In doing so, the viewer is invited to nostalgically embrace the cultural mythos of the classical, neo-classical or Romantic. Morrison establishes a sort of narrative continuum between a world of commercial flight and the colonial verandas of the 19th century (‘n Infinite Summer), presenting her new historicism in beautiful, aesthetic calmness. Morwenna Morrison is based in Penzance. A graduate of the Exeter College of Art and Design’s Fine Art programme (1988), she has exhibited extensively across the UK as both a solo artist and a contributor to group shows.
