  • Illogan Village Trail
How to find Illogan Illogan The Village of Illogan is situated north of the conurbation of Camborne, Pool and Redruth. The village can be approached from the A30 using the A3047 and secondary roads; or from the North Coast road (B3301) which runs between Hayle and Portreath. Village Trail The Ordinance Survey Map reference is SW673 434. From the A30 (Truro/Bodmin or Penzance) Take the exit signed for Redruth. Follow the signs to Camborne and Pool (A3047). Staying on the A3047, pass the Camborne Redruth Hospital on the left, then a garage on the right, and take the second right, signed ‘Chariot Road’. Continue to the five crossroads at Paynters Lane End. This is Point 1 of the Village Trail. From the North Cliffs Road and Portreath (B3301) At the top of the Tregea Hill, Portreath, turn and follow the signs to Illogan. Continue along the road, and at the East Lodge gates to Tehidy Woods, turn left into Alexandra Road. Continue to the five crossroads at Paynters Lane End. This is Point 1 of the Village Trail. Illogan has become a village of The Harris Memorial Surgery, until recently mixed architecture, both old and was a hall built in 1887 at a cost of £750 by Nance new. It has a number of housing Mrs William Harris in memory of her 4 estates beyound the area husband a merchantman of Pool. 3 we have covered. Originally the villiage was a cluster of cottages and a school huddled around the church at Churchtown. Illogan has a long history and it’s name is derived from the Celtic Saint 2 who migrated to Cornwall in 547.

  • Bodmin Transport Strategy Development
Bodmin Transport Strategy Development Appendix G – Bodmin Strategy May 2017 Bodmin’s Transport Strategy sits within the context of Cornwall Council’s overarching transport strategy, Connecting Cornwall – as set out in more detail in section 2.17. Currently high volumes of traffic and congestion in the centre of Bodmin have resulted in localised congestion and an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) being declared, which can be a barrier to further growth, unless appropriately addressed. There is a strong desire to see housing and economic growth, including the regeneration of the town centre. The proposed transport strategy aims to address current constraints within the town centre through the delivery of strategic junction enhancements to create capacity, while underpinning the sustainable aims set out in the LTP3, through the delivery of a much improved walking and cycling network, as well as an improved public transport offering. To support the enhancement of the town centre, plans are in place to deliver an innovative low speed environment along part of Dennison Road, through Church Square and as far as Shire House on Turf Street. The scheme will enable growth, whilst managing congestion and giving greater emphasis to the needs of pedestrians and cyclists, which in turn will help to manage air quality. Strategic upgrades are also proposed at Launceston Road/ Priory Road junction, Fiveways, Callywith Gate and Respryn to mitigate against the impacts of growth, improve conditions for pedestrians and cyclists and open up land for development, including two urban extensions located on the north-east and south-east of the town. Furthermore, Bodmin has identified an opportunity to promote itself as a cycle town, building on the back of the high quality cycle offerings on the periphery of the town, namely Lanhydrock, the Camel Trail and Cardinham cycle hub.

  • THE FLOWERS THAT BLOOM in the SPRING a Six Day Tour to Enjoy the Cream of Cornish Gardens and the Music of London Festival Opera 24Th to 29Th April 2022 St Mawes
THE FLOWERS THAT BLOOM IN THE SPRING A six day tour to enjoy the cream of Cornish Gardens and the Music of London Festival Opera 24th to 29th April 2022 St Mawes here better to enjoy the arrival of spring than in Cornwall. The county has more than its fair share of marvellous gardens, in part thanks to the warmth CORNWALL W St Austell brought to its shores by the Gulf Stream. From our central base, the stylish and The Lost Gardens Caerhays Estate of Heligan unique Tresanton Hotel in the lovely small port of St Mawes, we will explore Lamorran Gardens St Just in Roseland St Mawes some of the finest and most beautiful gardens, and always close by will be the Glendurgan Estate sea, providing the most dramatic of backdrops to the botanical wonders. For us one of the most important rules in organising a botanical tour is that it should not be rushed. So, apart from a guided tour of the gardens there will also be free time to explore individually, take in the vistas and sit and wonder at what nature and man have created. Nowhere, is this more important than at the Lost Gardens of Heligan. The extensive work carried out here over the last twenty years is truly phenomenal and cannot be appreciated in a fleeting visit. Likewise, the extensive ravine and cliffside gardens of Glendurgan need time to appreciate as you make your way down to the sea. A highlight for many will be our day at Caerhays Castle and Garden. Designated by Kew as being a garden of outstanding importance and covering some 120 acres, the unique microclimate here at this private garden has produced something rather unique.

  • 4.0 Appraisal of Special Interest
4.0 APPRAISAL OF SPECIAL INTEREST 4.1 Character Areas Botallack The history and site of Botallack Manor is critical to an understanding of the history and development of the area. It stands at the gateway between the village and the Botallack mines, which underlay the wealth of the manor, and were the reason for the village’s growth. The mines are clearly visible from the manor, which significantly stands on raised ground above the valley to the south. Botallack Manor House remains the single most important building in the area (listed II*). Dated 1665, it may well be earlier in some parts and, indeed, is shown on 19th century maps as larger – there are still 17th century moulded archway stones to be found in the abandoned cottage enclosure south of the manor house. The adjoining long range to the north also has 17th century origins. The complex stands in a yard bounded by a well built wall of dressed stone that forms a strong line along the road. The later detached farm buildings slightly to the east are a good quality 18th/19th century group, and the whole collection points to the high early status of the site, but also to its relative decline from ‘manorial’ centre to just one of the many Boscawen holdings in the area from the early 19th century. To the south of Botallack Manor the village stretches away down the hill. On the skyline to the south is St Just, particularly prominent are the large Methodist chapel and the Church, and there is an optical illusion of Botallack and St Just having no countryside between them, perhaps symbolic of their historical relationship.

Isles of Scilly Naturetrek Tour Report 14 - 21 September 2019 Porthcressa and the Garrison Red Squirrel Grey Seals Birdwatching on Peninnis Head Report & Images by Andrew Cleave Naturetrek Mingledown Barn Wolf's Lane Chawton Alton Hampshire GU34 3HJ UK T: +44 (0)1962 733051 E: [email protected] W: www.naturetrek.co.uk Tour Report Isles of Scilly Tour participants: Andrew Cleave (leader) plus 12 Naturetrek clients Summary Our early-autumn week on the Isles of Scilly was timed to coincide with the bird migration which is easily observed on the islands. Our crossings to and from Scilly on Scillonian III enabled us to see seabirds in their natural habitat, and the many boat trips we took during the week gave us close views of plenty of the resident and migrant birds which were feeding and sheltering closer to shore. We had long walks on all of the inhabited islands and as well as birds, managed to see some marine mammals, many rare plants and some interesting intertidal marine life. Informative evening lectures by resident experts were well received and we also sampled lovely food in many of the pubs and cafés on the islands. Our waterfront accommodation in Schooners Hotel was very comfortable and ideally placed for access to the harbour and Hugh Town. Day 1 Saturday 14th September We began our trip in Penzance harbour where we boarded Scillonian III for the crossing to Scilly. Conditions were fine for the crossing and those of us up on deck had good views of seabirds, including Gannets, Fulmars and winter-plumage auks as we followed the Cornish coast and then headed out into the Atlantic.

  • The Distribution of Ammonium in Granites from South-West England
Journal of the Geological Society, London, Vol. 145, 1988, pp. 37-41, 1 fig., 5 tables. Printed in Northern Ireland The distribution of ammonium in granites from South-West England A. HALL Department of Geology, Royal Holloway and Bedford New College, Egham, Surrey TW20 OEX, UK Abstract: The ammonium contents of granites, pegmatites and hydrothermally altered rocks from SW England have been measured. Ammonium levels in the granites are generally high compared with those from other regions, averaging 36ppm,and they differ markedlybetween intrusions. The pegmatites show higherammonium contents than any other igneous rocks which have yet been investigated. Ammonium contents are strongly enriched in the hydrothermally altered rocks, includ- ing greisens and kaolinized granites. There is agood correlation between the average ammonium content of the intrusions in SW England and their initial "Sr/*'Sr ratios and peraluminosity. This relationship supports the hypothesis that the ammonium in the granites is derived from a sedimentary source, either in the magmatic source region or via contamination of the magma. Introduction Results Ammonium is present as a trace constituent of granitic The granites rocks, in which it occurs in feldspars and micas substituting isomorphously for potassium (Honma & Itihara 1981). The The new analyses of Cornubian granites are given in Table amount of ammonium in granites varies from zero to over 1. They show a range of 3-179 parts per million NH:, with 100 parts per million, and it has been suggested that high the highest values being found in relatively small intrusions. concentrations may indicate the incorporation of organic- Taking the averagefor each of the major intrusions, and rich sedimentary material into the magma, either from the weighting them according to their relative areas (see Table presence of such material in rhe magmatic source region or 4), the average ammonium contentof the Cornubian granites via the assimilation of organic-rich country rocks (Urano as a whole is 36 ppm.
