Constantine’s Creative Curriculum Tresillian Class - Summer term Cornwall This term, children will be immersed in everything Cornish! Through studying our local area, children will learn about the mining heritage of our county. Children will also learn about Pip Staffieri, Europe’s first stand up surfer from Newquay and explore about how surfing became so popular in our county. Through geographical enquiry, children will discover the diverse features of Cornwall and be able to locate famous Cornish landmarks. A trip to Geevor Tin Mine will enable children to understand what life would have been like as a miner. Art will also be a large focus this term as we explore Cornwall’s most influential artists. ONS NATIONAL DIM NATIONAL DIMENNATIONAL DIMENSIONS NAL DIMENSIONS DIMENSIONS NATIO This report was researched and written by AEA Consulting: Magnus von Wistinghausen Keith Morgan Katharine Housden This report sets out the collaborative work undertaken by the UK’s nationally funded museums, libraries and archives with other organisations across the UK, and assesses their impact on cultural provision across the nation. It focuses on the activities in recent years of members of the National Museum Directors’ Conference (NMDC), and is largely based on discussions with these institutions and selected partner organisations, as well as on a series of discussion days hosted by the NMDC in different regional centres in July 2003. It does not make specific reference to collaborative work between NMDC organisations themselves, and focuses on activities and initiatives that have taken place in the last few years. For the sake of simplicity the term ‘national museum’ is used throughout the report to describe all NMDC member organisations, notwithstanding the fact that these also include libraries and archives. In this report the term ‘national’ is used to denote institutions established by Act of Parliament as custodians of public collections that belong to the nation. It is acknowledged that the NMDC does not include all museums and other collecting institutions which carry the term ‘national’ as part of their name. Just a Balloon BALLOON DEBRIS ON CORNISH BEACHES Cornish Plastic Pollution Coalition | January 2017 BACKGROUND This report has been compiled by the Cornish Plastic Pollution Coalition (CPPC), a sub-group of the Your Shore Network (set up and supported by Cornwall Wildlife Trust). The aim of the evidence presented here is to assist Cornwall Council’s Environment Service with the pursuit of a Public Spaces Protection Order preventing Balloon and Chinese Lantern releases in the Duchy. METHODOLOGY During the time period July to December 2016, evidence relating to balloon debris found on Cornish beaches was collected by the CPPC. This evidence came directly to the CPPC from members (voluntary groups and individuals) who took part in beach-cleans or litter-picks, and was accepted in a variety of formats:- − Physical balloon debris (latex, mylar, cords & strings, plastic ends/sticks) − Photographs − Numerical data − E mails − Phone calls/text messages − Social media posts & direct messages Each piece of separate balloon debris was logged, but no ‘double-counting’ took place i.e. if a balloon was found still attached to its cord, or plastic end, it was recorded as a single piece of debris. PAGE 1 RESULTS During the six month reporting period balloon debris was found and recorded during beach cleans at 39 locations across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly shown here:- Cornwall has an extensive network of volunteer beach cleaners and beach cleaning groups. Many of these are active on a weekly or even daily basis, and so some of the locations were cleaned on more than one occasion during the period, whilst others only once. -

There are picturesque harbours and grand country houses set in vast acreages. There are impressive landmarks from the past such as Tintagel Castle, St Michael’s Mount and more standing stones and Neolithic sites than you can shake a stick at. They exist happily alongside the present day futuristic domes of Eden, the stately grey bulk of Tate St Ives, old Mine chimneys (sensibly bestowed with World Heritage status) and the spoil heaps of the clay pits near St Austell. 35 BEST OF CORNWALL 2020 However there is more to Cornwall’s appeal than It was clear that luck landmarks. Image captions on page 3 The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) presents The Invisible Man and the Masque of Blackness, marking the artist Zak Ové’s first solo exhibition in Los Angeles. Ové (b. 1966) is a British visual artist of Trinidadian descent who works in sculpture, film, and photography. His 40-piece sculptural installation The Invisible Man and the Masque of Blackness features a group of identical, 6 1/2-foot-tall reproductions of an African figure that the artist received as a gift from his father in his early childhood. Ové’s figures, fabricated from resin and graphite, hold their hands up at shoulder level in an act of quiet strength and resilience, and are spaced evenly in rows to ironically recall the formation of either a group soldiers or political dissidents. The exhibition title references two milestones in black history: Ben Jonson’s 1605 play The Masque of Blackness, the first stage production to utilize blackface makeup, and Ralph Ellison’s 1952 novel Invisible Man, the first novel by an African American to win the National Book Award. In addition to literary references, the artist draws inspiration from Caribbean Carnival, a festival that originated in the Mardi Gras celebrations of the region’s French colonists, and Canboulay, a parallel celebration in which enslaved people expressed themselves through music and costume and paid homage to their African traditions. Overall, the sculpture encapsulates the complex history of racial objectification and the evolution of black subjectivity. LACMA’s presentation will be the first time The Invisible Man and the Masque of Blackness is installed at an encyclopedic institution. -

FRANCIS BACON Dublin, Ireland, 1909- Madrid, Spain, 1992 Francis Bacon was born in Dublin but moved to London in 1925, where he lived and worked from then on. His figurative painting became famous for his grotesque portrayal of his subjects and its somber depiction of the human condition. He represented Britain in the Venice Biennale of 1956 together with artists Ben Nicholson and Lucian Freud, and is considered one of the most remarkable British artists of all time, although anecdotically he turned down a CBE in 1960. Though his work was not well received at first (and as a result he destroyed most of his earlier paintings), his fame started to grow from the 40s until he became one of the better known and most valued artists in the world. His art has been shown internationally in places such as Mexico City (1977), Madrid (1978), Tokio (1983) Moscow (1988) or Washington (1989), and the Tate Modern of London dedicated three retrospective exhibitions to his work (in 1977, 1985, and posthumously in 2008). During his life he was represented by the Hannover Gallery and the Malborough Fine Art Gallery, and nowadays we can find his pieces in museums and art galleries all around the world, for example at the Reina Sofía of Madrid, the Centre Pompidou of Paris, the MoMA of New York or the Tate Modern in London, and a number of them are part of private collections. Exhibition curator Lauren Cornell, New Museum Curator and Associate Director of Technology Initiatives, is supported by Chinese curator Baoyang Chen, appointed by KAF as Assistant Curator, to explore how Chinese and international artists use surrogates, proxies, and avatars to expand the notion of being human. The exhibition features an international group of artists while focusing on emerging artists from China, in line with KAF’s mission. Included in the exhibition are works in sculpture, installation, photography, performance and video as well as works engaged with augmented and virtual reality. After us looks at the original personae that artists are animating: ones that amplify current social and emotional conditions and speculate on potential future states. With the rise of artificial intelligence, the social web and gaming, the process of adopting newly invented personae is now a common part of popular culture and daily life. Stand-ins for the self, for feelings and products, and for values and beliefs have expanded our lives and sense of possibility. The title After us raises the spectre of a society that will replace our own, and yet, many of the featured artists instead layer virtual or imagined states onto the present. -

Annual Report 2020 At CSGRT we described 2018 as a landmark year, 2019 saw us riding a wave of success, which we managed to sustain in 2020 despite COVID19. People We began 2020 with 4 paid rangers. At the start of 2020, our Rangers and activities were funded by The People’s Postcode Lottery (Postcode Local Trust), Heritage Lottery Fund, Heritage Emergency Fund, Natural England, TEVI, LUSH Cosmetics, TESCO Bags of Help, Seal Protection Action Group, Polzeath Marine Conservation Group, Three Bays Wildlife, Animal Friends, Aspects Holidays, Fourth Element, Mungo Lils on the Hill, Rowes Cornish Bakers, The Bowgie Inn, SeaChangers, Waterhaul, The University of Exeter and our incredible volunteer fundraising efforts and donations. However, during 2020, funding ran out and COVID19 made our finances rather precarious. As a result, we ran our first ever Crowdfunder Appeal. Thanks to everyone’s huge generosity and a lot of hard work by our team, we surpassed our target and raised a total of £21963.
