HISTORICAL NOTE

Dating back to the 1600’s the name Vellansagia is thought to mean ‘The Valley of Blood’ and was reported on in the Cornish Magazine May 1964 issue which reflected on how such a delightful and serene place earned such a gory title. The name Vellansagia over the years has had many spelling permutations but in 1580 was recorded as Melyn Saga which changed to Sager in 1620 and Sagia in 1714. Legend has it that the reason it was called the ‘The Valley of Blood’ is back to 936 A.D. when King Athalstan of England launched an attack on the Cornish Prince Howel and the last battle took place in this valley, along the Lamorna stream making it run with blood.

In the distant past the cottage was believed to be linked to the woollen industry as a fulling mill where home spun cloth was dipped, cleansed and dressed and these were known throughout the South West as tucking mills. The famous artist John Miller was commissioned to provide his architectural expertise for the renovation of the property in the mid 1960’s. John Miller was born in London in 1931 and then became well known for painting beach scenes of his home county Cornwall mainly of the West Penwith peninsula. He was the patron of local charities and an active supporter of the and responsible for some high profile architectural projects including a re-ordering of the interior of the Art Gallery. He became a member of the Newlyn Society of Artists in 1961 and has become one of the top 4 best selling landscape artists. 5 Ref: LCAA7075
