1 Adding Languages for Inputting on the Public Productivity (PPW)

The preset language for inputting on the PPW is English. You can add other languages — editors (IMEs) — for use during session. The added IMEs stay throughout the session. Each new session has only English as the default, but IMEs can be added or removed anytime during a session.

There are two ways to add languages: via the language button on the right side of the bottom taskbar, or via the . Let’ begin with the language button.

I. Using the Language Button

Step 1. Click the language button “” as circled below, then click “Show the language bar”.

2 Step 2. The language bar, as shown below, usually first displays at the top of screen, but can be dragged around. Click the small downward arrow on the bottom right corner of the language bar to display the box showing “Settings”, etc.

Box for Settings, etc., appears. Click “Settings”.

Step 3. Click “Settings” to display this panel on the “General” tab:

3 Step 4. To add French as an input language, for example, click the “Add” button on the panel. Another panel “Add Input Language” appears. From the list of languages, select French and a keyboard. Then click “Okay”, “Apply” and “Okay”.

Step 5. The selected IME (input method editor) for French has been added to the language bar. Click open the language bar and you will see “French ()” together with English, as shown here. To input French, simply select “French” in the box and begin writing in French. You can add more languages and the related keyboards in one operation, then click “Okay”, “Apply” and “Okay”.

4 II. Notes on Inputting Other Languages

(1) For some languages, preview of the is available by clicking the “Preview” button. The following shows a keyboard for Ukrainian:

(2) For inputting East Asian languages — Chinese, Japanese, Korean (CJK) — the commonly- used keyboards are checked and highlighted as follows. More information on CJK IMEs is available at http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/handson/user/ime_paper.mspx

Traditional Chinese: ChangJie

Simplified Chinese: IME (also usable for traditional Chinese characters)

Japanese: Microsoft IME

Korean: Microsoft IME

Example: Language IMEs added to the language bar: , Chinese, French, , Japanese, Korean, , Ukrainian; usable on various applications and Web searching.

7 III. Adding IMEs via the Control Panel

Step 1. Adding languages can also be done via the Control Panel. Click the “Start” button on the taskbar, and select “Settings — Control Panel”. In the Control Panel there is the Regional and Language Options icon. Click that icon to bring up the box as shown below. Select the “Keyboards and Languages” tab.

Step 2. Click the “Change keyboards” button which is on the “Keyboards and Languages” tab. The “Text Services and Input Languages” panel displays. You may proceed to add language IMEs as mentioned in Section I above.
