Interethnic Integration in Education Project MONTHLY REPORT for the USAID Interethnic Integration in Education Project April, 2015 I. IMPLEMENTED ACTIVITIES Component 1 - Community Outreach . Evaluation and selection of the best multimedia products received within the high- school competition "Multi-via-Media: How do we coexist together in schools”. A meeting was held of the expert commission for evaluation of the multimedia products for the high- school competition at which 37 schools applied with a total of 57 different multimedia products aimed at promoting the interethnic integration in the education. After the selection, all schools were informed of the results. Preparation and organization of ribbon-cutting ceremonies. On the occasion of the completion of the renovations, ribbon-cutting ceremonies were organized in the elementary school "Krume Volnaroski” from Prilep, elementary school ”Jonce Smugreski” from Krivogastani, secondary school "Bogdanci” from Bogdanci and elementary school “Bratstvo Edinstvo” from Ohrid. As hosts, these schools and municipalities welcomed the senior representatives of EUCOM and USAID, as well as the parents, teachers and students. At the event, the joint student activities for interethnic integration were also presented. Public promotional event of the video story "CREATIVE COMMUNITIES". As a result of the three-year engagement of the secondary schools for promotion of the interethnic integration in education by using the creative processes and the art as a tool, the video story was promoted within the Faculty of Dramatic Arts, which reflected the overall process and the influence on the young people from different ethnic communities. The first session of the three trainings for forum theatre methodology with selected teachers who led the process of the creative workshops. At the end of the month, the first module was held of the training for forum theatre methodology for the teachers from seven secondary schools that led the creative workshops. This tool will be used within the schools in the future as well, so that the teachers and the students will be able to jointly debate on a certain topic. Regular informing of institutions, municipalities and schools about the IIEP activities. Part of the activities covered regular updating of the information and publishing of news and stories about the course of the activities on the project’s web site: www.pmio.mk. Furthermore, the eleventh edition of the IIEP Media Digest was prepared and shared with all media outlets in Macedonia. Component 2 – Capacity Building of School Management and Teachers . Advanced level trainings for multilingual schools from Phase 3. The last two groups of trainings were held with representatives of the school integration teams in which 15 schools from Phase 3 participated. Meeting of the working group to work on the document for integration of IIE contents by schools subjects. At the meeting, the members of the group presented the initial examples of activities with integrated IIE contents that were prepared according to the guidelines defined at the previous meeting. After the presentation of the examples, there was a constructive discussion about the prepared examples and about the future tempo and the work of the group. Finalizing the Manual for the interethnic integration certification procedure. A meeting was held with BDE representatives in which the key aspects of the certification procedure were harmonized, based on which the final version was elaborated. The manual underwent a professional editing by the BDE management. Mentoring meeting with School integration teams for Phase 3 schools. The meeting was implemented with members of the SIT of the schools from the Debar and Centar Zupa region who upon their own initiative asked for additional support for implementation of IIE activities. At the meeting, the members of the SIT presented the experiences for the implemented activities in their schools and they jointly discussed and analysed the aspects that contribute to the successful implementation of the IIE activities. Support visits to multilingual schools from pilot phase and Phase 2. Support visits were held in the multilingual schools Cvetan Dimov and Tefejuz from the Municipality of Cair, during which the joint activities were monitored by the trained mentors. Support was given to the School integration team in the implementation of the joint activities. Approval of small grant applications. In line with the sent corrections to the small grant applications, a total of 11 schools received a grant approval in the course of this month. The total number of approved grants is 107. Support provided to schools for preparation and implementation of activities supported with a small grant. Support was provided to the schools for planning and implementation of the activities that are financially supported with the small grants, for the purposes of successful implementation of the activities in line with the IIE criteria. Visit of implemented joint student activities supported with a small grant. The joint student activities financed with small grants were visited in the following schools: Riste Risteski and Said Najdeni, Debar; Straso Pindzur and Lazo Micev Rale, Kavadarci with Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, Gostivar, Sv. Kliment Ohridski, Delcevo and Toli Zordumis, Kumanovo; Mehmet Derala, Gradec and Petar Musev, Bogdanci; Mirce Acev, Gjorce Petrov and Bajram Sabani, Saraj; Hristijan Karpos, Staro Nagoricane and Panajot Ginovski, Butel; Naim Fraseri, Studenicani and Kuzman Sapkarev, Kisela Voda; Tefejuz from Cair and Goce Delcev from Centar. Joint student sports and fun activities. Training for teachers-trainers for joint student sports and fun activities for IIE was held in Struga, at which teams of teachers from 10 schools participated. The goal of the training was for the teachers to be familiarized with new techniques and principles of fun games through which the children with different ethnicity will get to know each other, have fun and spend time together in the course of the curricular and extra-curriculum activities. Deepened cooperation for IIE in 10 municipalities. The IIEP team held meetings, organized by the people responsible for the education in the ten municipalities for deepened cooperation for IIE, in which the principals and the coordinators of the SIT-s of 48 elementary and secondary schools participated. The goal of these meetings is to deepen the cooperation for promotion of the IIE among the people responsible for education in the municipalities and the schools, as well to encourage the intensification of the IIE activities in the schools. Modification of the IIE instruments for implementation of the integral evaluation. After the implemented pilot integral evaluations in the elementary school Brakja Miladinovci - Aerodrom and the secondary municipal school Kole Nehtenin - Stip, the working group comprised of the responsible inspectors from SEI, with the support from the IIEP team, started upgrading the instruments by inserting corrections in the questionnaires and in the texts of the documents that are applied during the integral evaluation. Component 3 – Demonstration Schools . School competitions. At the regional choir singing competitions, the school choir from Bratstvo Edinsvo from Ohrid won the first place and qualified for participation in the state competition. The choir is a success story because it has been functioning in a mixed composition for years, with students from all communities. Parents’ actions. On the occasion of Easter, through the parents’ council of the elementary school Bratstvo Edinstvo from Ohrid, an egg decorating event was organized in the school. The event was attended by students from all communities present in the school. In this manner, the parents continued the tradition of celebrating the holidays related to the cultural identity of the different groups. Student initiatives. In the demonstration secondary schools from Gostivar and Skopje, in the organization of the school communities, fashion shows called TRASH FASHION were organized for which old and recycled paper was used. The secondary school from Skopje concurrently finalized the electronic issue of the school newspaper prepared by the School Community. The elementary schools from Kumanovo organized a joint sports football competition in which two teams with “mixed” composition of students and teachers participated, as well as an audience composed of students from both schools. The elementary demonstration school from Kicevo organized a joint student party on the occasion of 1st of April, which party was attended by students from all communities.
