March-April 2015

We had the opportunity this last month to attend the largest family history confer- ence in the world!! RootsTech welcomed over 23,000 people to be taught, inspired, uplifted and motivated to do more for our families through family history. It was a great event; I hope many of you took the time to attend. As I was walking from my car to the Salt Palace I met two men also on their way to the conference. They were brothers one from and one from Salt Lake. The man from Salt Lake told me, he had never paid much at- tention to the publicity on RootsTech, but when his brother told him he was flying out to attend, well he decided he had better check it out!! He signed up to attend and was really excited about it. I hope they had a great time and will attend again in the future. I invited my sister to come on Friday and we had a great sister’s sharing and bonding day. She was so excited to get some fan charts printed for her family, but she could not remember her username and password. Well we are sisters, with the same pedigree, so I logged on and we printed out her fan charts. It is good to be sisters!! She had a fun time and commented on how much she enjoyed all the activities and opportunities to learn from Ancestry.com and Family Search as helpers at those booths taught her how to better use the websites. One of the keynote addresses I enjoyed the most was Laura Bush. She talked about her family and how much they meant to her. Jenna Bush asked her mother, what she missed most about the White House, without hesitation Laura replied “the cook!!” I can understand her feelings!! Another of the keynote addresses was given by A. J. Jacobs. His address was about the global family. As we entered the conference hall the morning of his address, each of us had on our seats a sign that said I AM A COUSIN. His talk centered on the fact that we are all related. We may be 12th or 13th cousins, but we are all related!! He has organized a global family reunion that will be held on June 6 of this year. Many organizations around the world will participate in the activities centered around the family. The Salt Lake will be one of the major participants. So check your calendar and watch for more information. His last comment was pretty amazing. He said he believes that family history will unite the world in peace, because it would be pretty hard to declare war on your cousin. Very Inter- esting thought, I believe he is right. Some of the classes and addresses from RootsTech will be avail- able online for a period of time. So check it out and next year, come and join the largest family history event in the WORLD!!! One more thing, if any of you would like to volunteer at the South Davis Family History Center, don’t hesitate to give us a call. We would love to have you join our staff family of volunteers. The number at the center is 801-299-4239. Kathy Palmer

-4- CONSULTANT NEWS MANY THANKS!!!! We would like to thank Elsie Kelly for all of her years of dedication and work to the South Davis Family History Center. We love you Elsie! WELCOME We have two new consultants: Judy Naluai and Debbie Hammon. We are so grateful they have joined our staff! We wish Ron Perkes and Marsha Roth a speedy recovery, that they will be feeling better soon

I have updated the Staff Schedule and the Staff Directory. Please let me know if there are any errors that need to be corrected. Also, if there are changes to your shift, please call me and let me know as soon as possible.

I have also updated the certification program again. The training on lds.org is changing every few weeks. Just remember that once you finish a section, you do not have to redo it if a new revision of the certification program comes out. Also, some items may move from one section to another because of the changes to the Church websites; if you find a duplicate that you have already completed, just mark it off. Feel free to call me with any questions.

Thanks for everything that you do! I am so impressed with the quality of help that you give to the patrons that come to the center.

“As you accept this challenge and teach it to others, I promise you that you will feel the beautiful link that binds us together as families through eternity.” —Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve -5- FamilySearch Provides LDS Members Free Accounts to AmericanAncestors.org February 18, 2015 By Paul G. Nauta

FamilySearch.org, the family history brand of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, today announced that Church members can now receive free personal affiliate level subscriptions to AmericanAncestors.org, the premier research website of the New England Historic Genealogical Society. Personal access to this service is provided at no cost for Latter-day Saints as part of an agreement between FamilySearch and Ameri- canAncestors.org, and includes all the tools, features, and affiliate level resources of the site. To sign up for a free subscription, Latter-day Saint patrons can visit . org/partneraccess.

Founded in 1845, the New England Historic Genealogical Society is America’s oldest and most respected resource for family history research and the largest genealogical society in America today. Although the institution’s name says “New England,” the or- ganization is national in scope and provides expertise and research materials through AmericanAncestors.org in nearly all aspects of family history, from seventeenth-century colonial New England, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia, through twenty-first cen- tury immigration research.

Used in tandem with the latest FamilySearch tools, AmericanAncestors.org can open new doors of discovery and enhance members’ ability to identify more ancestors and make more family connections. “Our founders recognized 170 years ago that family history would become important to all Americans,” said Brenton Simons, President and CEO of New England Historic Genealogical Society and AmericanAncestors.org. “For that reason, AmericanAncestors.org is a hub and treasure trove for family historians. We really do have something for everyone.”Dennis Brimhall, FamilySearch CEO, said the collaboration will provide indispensable assistance to Latter-day Saint families by pro- viding a breadth of information unavailable elsewhere.

“By partnering with AmericanAncestors.org, we’re making a remarkable scope of new data available to our members,” said Brimhall. “We expect there will be many new fam- ily discoveries as our members become familiar with these rich, vast New England records. We are honored to be associated with America’s oldest genealogical society.” Latter-day Saints can sign up for a free subscription at https://familysearch.org/partner- access NOTE: You cannot register for these sites at the Family History Center, this must be done at home.

-6- SHARING TEMPLE OPPORTUNITIES WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS IS NOW A FAMILYSEARCH FEATURE Ron Tanner, Jan 13, 2015 One of the biggest requests we get from LDS members is for an easy way to share reservations with family and friends. A new feature on the temple reservation page does just that. Now, you can send temple names from your temple reservation list to others that are ready and willing to bring them to the temple. Here's how it works: To Share A Reservation With Family Or Friends 1. Check the box next to any ancestor reservation you would like to give to a friend or family member to complete. Click Share and Share with Family or Friends.

2. Enter the name and email address of the family or friend recipient, and then click Send.

3. Shared reservations will be marked with an envelope icon and remain on your reser- vation list until they are accepted by your family or friend.

4. When accepted, the reservation will disappear from your list. If your invitation is not accepted in 2 weeks, the share envelope icon will be removed, allowing you to print, share, or unreserve your ancestor reservation again.

This new feature makes it easier than ever for families to collaborate in the work of sal- vation for ancestors. It also gives people with large reservation lists a way to share the blessings of temple service with others while ensuring that temple ordinances are com- pleted in a timely manner. QUESTION ON TEMPLE RESERVATION LISTS AND TIME LIMITS Renee's Genealogy Blog - RootsTech 2015 - Friday Recap and Photos Currently there are 14 million ordinances reserved. About 3 weeks ago they turned on a feature where you can share your reservations with a family member or others. In the next period of time (weeks to months) they will be doing the following. -Everyone in North America that has a name that's been on the reservation list for more than 2 years will get an email. They will have the following options You can re-reserve the name, You can share it with someone. If you do neither it will be unreserved and made available to other descendants that can do it

When anyone reserves a name a little window will come up making them aware that if they haven't taken action on this within 2 years the options that will then happen. Test- ing has shown it will have a dramatic impact on this reservation issue. They will not do this outside of North America because some of them just don't get to the temple every two years.

When a user is deceased FamilySearch does not always know they have passed away. So those reservations being held will be automatically released, since they can't reply to the email being sent. Regardless if you get the email or not if its on the list longer than 2 years its time is up and it will be released. The policy for a 2 year limit has already been approved by the twelve. -7- Internet Sites Worth A LOOK!
