Mark Ashurst-McGee Over the last two decades, historians have reconsidered the origins of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the context of the early American tradition of treasure hunting. Well into the nineteenth century there were European Americans hunting for buried wealth. Some believed in treasures that were protected by magic spells or guarded by preternatural beings. Joseph Smith, founding prophet of the Church, had participated in several treasure-hunting expeditions in his youth. The church that he later founded rested to a great degree on his claim that an angel named Moroni had appeared to him in 1823 and showed him the location of an ancient scriptural record akin to the Bible, which was inscribed on metal tablets that looked like gold. After four years, Moroni allowed Smith to recover these “golden plates” and translate their characters into English. It was from Smith’s published translation—the Book of Mormon—that members of the fledgling church became known as “Mormons.” For historians of Mormonism who have treated the golden plates as treasure, Moroni has become a treasure guardian. In this essay, I argue for the historical validity of the traditional understanding of Moroni as an angel. In May of 1985, a letter to the editor of the Salt Lake Tribune posed this question: “In keeping with the true spirit (no pun intended) of historical facts, should not the angel Moroni atop the Mormon Temple be replaced with a white salamander?”1 Of course, the pun was intended. -

Phelps was in structed to stop at Cincinnati on his way to Missouri, and purchase a press and type, for the purpose of establishing and publishing a monthly paper at Independence, Jackson County, Missouri, to be called the "Eve ning and Morning Star."-Times and Seasons, vol. 5, p. 481. ·w. Phelps, ifl }larmony with the instructions, went to Cincinnati, Ohio, secured the press and type and proceeded to Independence, Jack son County, Missouri, where he issued a prospectus setting forth his in tentions; extracts from which indicate the attitude of Saints relative to the publication of the message of the Restored. Gospel. The Evening and the Morning Star will be published at Independence, Jackson County, State of Missouri. As the forerunner of the night of the end, and the messenger of the day of redemption, the Star will borrow its light from sacred sources, and be devoted to the revelations of God as made known to his servants by the Holy Ghost, at sundry times since the creation of man, but more especially in these last days, for restoration of the house of Israel. -

Roberts presented information to the leadership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in January of 1922 that fundamentally challenged the entire premise of their religious beliefs. New research shows that in addition to church leadership, this information was also presented during the neXt few months to a select group of highly educated Mormon men and women outside of church hierarchy. This group represented many aspects of Mormon belief, different areas of eXpertise, and varying approaches to dealing with challenging information. Their stories create a beautiful tapestry of Mormon life in the transition years from polygamy, frontier life, and resistance to statehood, assimilation, and respectability. A study of the people involved illuminates an important, overlooked, underappreciated, and eXciting period of Mormon history. -

Roads in those days were dirt and mud tracks—often mere ruts—that were marginally suitable for wagon travel. And the wagons didn’t bring just emigrants. Contributing significantly to road use, both in terms of degradation and upkeep, were the teamsters who rumbled constantly back and forth carrying freight and mail. As early as 1849, the Great Salt Lake Carrying Company was handling freight between the Mis- souri River and California, charging passengers $300 to ride along. Also in that year, the first post office was established in Great Salt Lake City. But the post office was merely a central depository of all mail arriving in town. Delivery was voluntary, as mail was brought by travelers from Independ- ence, Missouri, when convenient or carried by boat to San Francisco and then overland to Salt Lake City.1 The Mormons soon organized their own private mail service between the valley and the Saints in Kanesville (now Council Bluffs, Iowa), with Almon W. -

Back of Beyond Books proudly releases Catalogue #19. We continue to feature books and ephemera from the American West but you’ll also find numerous pages of Americana, Travel and Photographic material along with Explora- tion, Mining and Native Americana. We’ve also picked up small collections of Poetry and Art Books which have been fun to catalogue. Perhaps my favorite genre of Catalogue #19 are the 21 Promotional items from western states and communities. These colorful pamphlets, mostly from the early 20th century, would make any Chamber of Commerce proud. It’s always interesting to see what items sell quickly in each catalogue. I of- ten guess wrong so I’ll leave the decisions up to you. Several items of note, however, include: The best association copy known of Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian--inscribed to Edward Abbey, a beautifully bright advertising poster for the ‘Field Self Discharging Rake’, a scarce promotional for the Salt River Valley of Arizona, a full-plate tintype from Volcano, California, and six large format albumen photographs depicting archaeological sites of Arizona and New Mexico by John K. Hillers. I’m also taken with the striking and rare Broadside for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, the very clean re- view copy of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring and the atlas from the Pike Expe- dition published in 1810. ARTICLES AND ESSAYS William Smith, 1811-93: Problematic Patriarch Irene M. Bates WILLIAM SMITH, YOUNGER BROTHER of the prophet Joseph Smith, has been easy to dismiss but difficult to deal with. More often than not, he has been described with adjectives like violent, wicked, unstable, and licentious. Yet intriguing references suggest that a more balanced view of this complex man might be appropriate. The Prophet described his brother in a blessing 18 December 1833 this way: "Brother William is as the fierce lion which divideth not the spoil because of his strength." x Then on 9 December 1842, William defended the Nauvoo Charter with uncommon eloquence as representative for Hancock County in the Illinois legislature.2 In August 1845, W. W. Phelps designated William "the Patriarchal Jacob's Staff." 3 And B. H. Roberts, impressed with the seventy-year-old William in 1881, said he had "so vindicated the claims and the character of his brother that ever afterward whenever the question of Joseph Smith came up, people would say 'He had just as good a right to be a prophet as any man mentioned in the Bible.' " 4 William Smith was born at Royal t o n , Vermont, 13 March 1811, the fifth son of Joseph, Sr., and Lucy Mack Smith. He was baptized by David Whitmer 9 June 1830 and was ordained an apostle 15 February 1835, before he was twenty-four years old. He married Caroline Amanda Grant, the sister of IRENE M. Bates, who joined the Church in England in 1955 and moved to the United States with her husband, William, and four children in 1967, is a 1975 graduate of UCLA. -

Hal Pierce Star Valley During 1877 Moses Thatcher and Bishop William B. Preston had explored this valley and were impressed by its beauty and potential. There was evidence that Shoshone Indians had previously been there but were not in the area at that time. On 29 August 1878 Elder Brigham Young, Jr. dedicated it as a gathering place for the Saints. In 1880 the city of Afton became the first settling place and the valley was then named Star Valley because it was a star among valleys. The location was then praised in an article in the Logan Utah newspaper during September 1880. Archibald Gardner visited the valley and asked Bishop C. D. Cazier for advice and explained he was looking for land and a good place to set up mill sites. Although he was happily settled in Jordan Utah he needed a place to avoid being arrested as a polygamist. The Church issued a Manifesto against polygamy in 1890 which eliminated the threat of his being arrested. For a time Archibald boarded with Catherine Carpenter in a room that was exposed to the outside elements (garret) and without sufficient bedding. He suffered from exposure to the weather and never fully recovered from it. -

MASON 2005 All rights reserved SINNERS IN THE HANDS OF AN ANGRY MOB: VIOLENCE AGAINST RELIGIOUS OUTSIDERS IN THE U.S. SOUTH, 1865-1910 Abstract by Patrick Q. Mason Studies of violence in the late nineteenth-century South focus almost exclusively on racial and political violence against African Americans. While this emphasis is both understandable and appropriate, what has been largely neglected is the violence committed against religious outsiders, and more generally their overall treatment in what was essentially a hegemonic culture of evangelical Protestantism. In addition to the many instances of violence against African American churches and ministers, the South also witnessed dozens of episodes of anti-Jewish violence and literally hundreds of cases of anti-Mormon violence from 1865 to 1910. Acknowledging and understanding this relatively hidden chapter in American history provides us with unique insights into postbellum southern culture and the sometimes violent side of the American experiment in religious pluralism. This dissertation adds to the growing body of scholarship exploring the relationships between religion and violence in southern history and American history more broadly by making three primary contributions. First, it uncovers numerous untold narratives of violence against southern religious outsiders.
