Notsolongago,Bollingtonwasahiveofindustrywithquarrying,mining,andupto 20millsconnectedwiththecotton,flourandpaperindustries–andaboutthesame numberofpubswheretheworkerscouldslaketheirthirsts.There’sstillthecanal, buttherailwayclosedin1971–imaginehowpopularitwouldbenow! Fromyourstartingpoint,walkupIngersleyRoadand,atthePoachersInn,turnright downMillLane(2).Thelaneeventuallynarrowstoastonytrackandyousoonturn lefttopassasmallrowofcottages.Justatthebackofthelastcottage,andbeforea factory,turnlefttoclimbstonesteps,andgointoafield(4).Thepathgoesuphilland bearsright,takingyoupastawoodenfencetowardsawallonyourleft.

Lookoutforacombinationofstepsandastileinthewall.Crossthestile(4),turn rightand,afterabout30m,turnleftontoawidegrassytrackleadingawayfromthe factoryinthevalleyanduphilltowardsasetofgates.

CrossoverthemaindriveofSavioHouse.Untilthe1970s,thiswasIngersleyHall Farm,butisnowaretreatandconferencecentrerunbytheSalesianreligiousorder. Continuealongawide,raisedtracktowardsasmallwood(keepitonyourleft)then gothroughakissinggatetoastonytrack(5).Turnimmediatelyrightafterastepstile andrightagaintocrossastilewithaGritstoneTrailmarkerandwalkdownhill,witha wallonyourright.Longago,thispathwasusedbythemenandwomenwhowalked toBollingtoneveryday toworkinthemills.It stillhassomeofthe originalstonestepsand paving.

Climbuphilltopassa white-paintedhouse. Aftertwostiles,youwill findathirdstilealmost immediatelyonyour right.Crossthisbut thenturnleftand continueontherightof thewallinroughlythe samedirectionas before–i.e.not downhill.Onyourright, asyoupassthrough thisfield,youwillsee theWhiteNancy monumentatoneend ofKerridgeHill.

Continuetotheendof thefield.Gooverthe stilethat’sfacingyou andwalkstraightahead tocrossastileinthe far-leftcorner.After enteringthisnextfield, crossastilehalf-wayalongtheoppositewall.Thenextstileisinthefar-right-hand corner–squeezethroughthisandturnlefttowards,passingthroughtwo morestilesanddownastone-slabbedslope.Here,onyourright,youwillseethe lakeandgardensofHoughHoleHouse,completewithitsVictorianAllegorical Gardenandstoneplaquesalongapathrepresentingthestoryof‘APilgrim’s Progress’.ThegardensarecurrentlyopenonthelateMayBankHolidayandAugust BankHolidayMondaysandtogroupsbypriorarrangementatothertimes–phone 01625573251fordetails.

Yousoonreachaminorroad.Turnrighthere(6).After100m,turnleftupsome steps(7)intoafield.Keeptotherightandheaddownhill,thencrossastileandtwo footbridgesoverstreams.Fromhere,headsteeplyuphill,roughlyparalleltopower cablesonyourright,headingforagapinthetreesatthetopofthehill(8).

Fromthetopofthehill,youhaveachoice:

Forashortwalk: turnrightandwalkalongtheridgetotheWhiteNancymonument, commemoratingtheBattleofWaterloo.Onyourway,youwillhaveaparticularly impressiveviewofyouroutwardroute.FromWhiteNancy,continuestraightahead LookingbacktowardsHoughHoleHouse todropstraightdowntoChanceryLaneandjointhelongwalkersneartheendof thisdescriptionwhereitsays“Longandshortwalksjoinhere:”.

Forthecompleteroute: carryonoverthehill,thenturnleftalongsideawalland headsteeplydownhilltoaroad.Crosstheroadandturnright(9)alongthewide tracktoEndonHouse.After200m,andbeforeanyofthebuildings,takeasharpleft hairpinalongsideawidesteelgate(10).Afterafewminutes,crossastilebesidea widewoodengate.Fromhere,youmustignoreyourOrdnanceSurveymapasthere havebeenmajor(legal)diversionsoftherightsofwayandapermissivepathhas beenprovided.Thisisthecurrentbestroute:aftercrossingthestilebythewooden gate,turnleftthroughagatewaymarkedas“PermissivePath”.Followthisacrossa fieldandcrossthedriveforSwanscoeFarm.Thediversioncontinues,takingyou throughagateandbackontothedriveandthen,afterjustafewmetres,turnsright throughanothergatetoaflightofsteps.Atthebottomofthesteps,thediversion turnsleftalongsideawallandabovealargeornamentalpond.

Thedivertedright-of-wayemergesontothedrivetoLowerSwanscoeFarm,from whereyoucontinueforhalfamiletoaroad.Turnrighthereandpasstheentranceto SwanscoeHall(11),keepingtotherightalongSwanscoeLane.After200m,bear rightdownaroadsignedasa‘deadend’and,afterabout100m,entertheprivate drive(12)signedto‘Woodlands,WoodendandShrigleyFold’.Afterthesecond property,forkrightonasignedfootpath.Passbuildingsonyourleftandfollowthe waymarksgentlydownhill.Continuetowardsaruinedbarn,beforewhichyouturn left,thenpasstotherightofanoldmineshaft,nowfilledin.Gostraightaheadfrom HollinHallHotel hereonanobvioustracktoasmallpoolbyagate.Continuetotherightofthe hedge,andfollowthewaymarkstowalkbetweentwopoolstotheoppositestile.

Crossatrack,anotherstile,andbearrighttofollowthepathtotheleftofyetanother pool–theylikepoolsaroundhere–andcontinuetotheroad(13).Crosstheroad andwalktoasmallbridgeacrossastream–agoodplacetowashyourboots.On yourfarleftisthecanalandaheadistheoldAdelphicottonmill,nowconvertedfor officeandlightcommercialpurposes.Bearslightlyrightfromthebridgeandkeepthe streamonyourrightasyoupassthroughasuccessionofgates.Keepfollowingthe waymarksasyoucontinueaheaduntilyoureachabridgeoverastream.Bearright afterthisandpassthroughtwokissinggatestocrossawidetrack;asyoucrossthe finalfield,youcanseetheHollinHallHoteltoyourleft.Thewaymarkedpathfinally joinsaroad(14)inKerridge,oppositetheprevioussiteofHolyTrinityChurch.Go left,walkalongtheroadandturnrightintoChanceryLane.

Longandshortwalksjoinhere: continuealongChanceryLane,downLordStreet, alongChurchStreet,andbacktothestartingpoint.Afewyearsago,youwouldhave passedthepremisesofShrigleyDyers(slogan:“WeLivetoDye”)–butthecompany closedandthelandwasusedforhousingdevelopment.
